Walter Smith pulled off a cannie deal to sign David Weir from Hearts. The Edinburgh club accepted his knockdown offer of £200,000 rather than see the player leave for nothing when his contract expired. Weir chose Everton over Liverpool because of his admiration for Smith. A highly-rated defender, Weir was big, strong, good in the air and a hard tackler.

mr smith’s bargain
Acclaimed as the best defender from Scotland, Weir’s calm but solid contributions were widely appreciated and he was the first name on the teamsheet at both Hampden and Goodison. A respected captain, he established himself alongside Richard Gough, and then Alan Stubbs, as a defensive pairing with no pace but lots of experience. With the advent of Joleon Lescott and Joseph Yobo, Weir tracked back to Scotland.
