Campbell scored nine times in his first eight outings to save Everton’s skin. In fact, he holds the distinction of being the Englishman who has scored the highest tally of goals in the Premiership without earning a full cap. Certainly his efforts were wildly celebrated at Goodison. However, he lost his sharpness after signing a lucrative five year deal in 2000.

Fearing another campaign edge towards the abyss, Walter Smith brought in Campbell on loan. It was a master-stroke. After the cash-strapped club somehow found £3m to secure his transer, the striker continued to find the target for some time until injuries restricted his mobility. With David Moyes’ tactics emphasising pace, the striker had few chances to justify his big wages.
