Nuno Valente arrived at Everton in August 2005 as an emergency signing after Alessandro Pistone seriously injured his knee leaving Everton with no fit left backs. He signed from Porto for 1.5million having had Everton recommended to him when spoke to his former manager Jose Mourinho.
Valente has had an extremely succesful career to date winning two League titles with Porto, 1 Portugues cup, the Uefa Cup and most impressivly the Champions League in 2004. In that time he established himslef as Portugal’s first choice left back and was invloved in the Portuguese team that came runners up to Greece in Euro 2004. After Mourinho left for Chelsea Valente did not have the best of times at Porto, falling out with the manager and in the process losing his place leaving him little choice but to leave the famous Portuguese club.
His arrival on Merseysid was greated with much enthusiasm amongst Everton supporters, however in his early days at Everton his performances surprised the Evertonians to say the least. In his first game for Everton, he was struggling with an ankle injury, struggling for fitness and also struggling to adapt to the English game. It led to a hugely dissappointing first game in a 1-0 loss at home to Portsmouth. This was shortly followed by a terrible performance in the Uefa Cup when Everton lost 5-1 to Dinamo Bucharest, in which Valente famously jumped out of the way of Dinamo’s 3rd goal. Since then Valente settled in to life in England off the pitch and it soon showed on the pitch. As the season has gone Valente has shown what a good full back he is and has become the left back that most of the Evertonians thought they had signed.
