Following his low-key move from Birmingham City for Â£100,000 in 1984, van den Hauwe could not have envisaged what lay ahead. The tough-as-nails left-back alarmed the Goodison faithful with his ferocious approach to the game. He was a member of the team that stormed to the League title and captured the club’s only European trophy to date.

Not for the want of trying, van den Hauwe was a runner-up on too many occassions. He earned his FA Cup runners-up medals in 1985, 1986 and 1989. The defender missed most of the 1986/87 season through injury byt returned to secure his place in history by scoring the only goal of thegame at Norwich which crowned the club back as champions. He joined Spurs for Â£575,000 in 1989.
