Rideout was an intelligent striker. He was a loyal Blue also. Even though his exit to Huan Dao Vanguards had been arranged, caretaker-boss Dave Watson was so desperate for players that he called Rideout back from China to support an ailing Everton side. Rideout’s farewell performance was a vital home win against Tottenham. He took command of midfield while his team-mates clung to their narrow lead.
