Rideout was acquired by Howard Kendall for £500,000 to dovetail with Tony Cotte. Their partnership never blossomed but Rideout will always have a special place in Everton history. He scrambled the winner at Ipswich in the penultimate fixture of the 1994/95 campaign which saved the club from relegation and 11 days later headed the winning goal in the FA Cup Final.

Rideout was an intelligent striker. He was a loyal Blue also. Even though his exit to Huan Dao Vanguards had been arranged, caretaker-boss Dave Watson was so desperate for players that he called Rideout back from China to support an ailing Everton side. Rideout’s farewell performance was a vital home win against Tottenham. He took command of midfield while his team-mates clung to their narrow lead.
