A truly gifted footballer whose speed of thought equalled his speed of foot, Beardsley possessed sublime control and a knack for picking out team-mates with inch perfect passes. He crossed Stanley Park after Dean Saunders chose Anfield over Goodison. Despite his red background, Beardsley was an inspired addition. Alas his stay was all too fleeting.

veteran england star
With shoulders haunched, the 30 year old looked every inch the veteran. Rescued from football’s bargain basement, Beardsley continued to unsettle defenses and decide matches all on his own. Despite his efforts, Everton never rose above mid-table, and he returned to Tyneside for £1.4m. Beardsley David Johnson remain the only two players to have scored for both clubs in Merseyside derbies.
