At the final whistle of the opening fixture of the 1988/89 season, Evertonians stood with smiles spread across their faces. Great things had been expected of Cottee but few fans could have predicted such a magnificent debut. He finished that game with a hat-trick and the season as the club’s top scorer with 18 goals. Even though Cottee lacked consistency, he remains in eighth position on Everton’s list of all-time marksmen.
