Anthony Lopes, the Lyon goalkeeper who was at the heart of a mass showing of handbags during Everton’s 2-1 defeat at Goodison last night, has described the incident as “no big deal.”
Most media reports rightly condemn one Evertonian for getting involved while holding a small child, although the tap on the head he delivered to Lopes is being labelled as anything from a slap to a punch as English journalists once again show that too much coffee can actually be a bad thing.
Lopes was target to mostly good-humoured banter before the incident – as are most visiting goalkeepers when stood in front of the Gwladys Street – but was clearly looking forward to taking his seat on the team bus afterwards!
“It was no big deal, it happened and that was it,” Lopes said after the game.
“For me it seemed to wake up the fans and they seemed to love it.
“I don’t think it is part of the English atmosphere to hit an away player, but it was like this. But I am proud that we were strong at 1-1 we won the game despite everything. It was a very proud night for us.”
Ashley Williams tried equally hard to play down the incident which resulted in just two yellow cards being shown, despite the media’s best efforts to make it out to have been worse than being caught in the Kop speaking English.
“It’s what happens, it’s football. It is what it is,” Williams said.
“It’s high emotions. We want to win the game, they want to win the game and stuff happens. That was just one of those times.”
Merseyside Police said in a statement: “Merseyside Police can confirm officers are investigating following a disturbance on the pitch during a football match between Everton and Lyon at Goodison Park last night, Thursday October 19.
“Detectives will be reviewing footage and speaking to witnesses to establish what, if any, offences have been committed.
“Anyone with information which could assist the investigation is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 0151 777 4065 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
