The Reds boss was furious with the referee after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw in the derby, but Premier League legend Alan Shearer told the Reds boss to “blame yourself” and his players for the result.
The German manager had very harsh words for referee Craig Pawson´s decision to award Dominic Calvert-Lewin a 77th-minute “debatable” penalty-kick after Dejan Lovren barged into the Toffees forward.
Rooney converted the penalty with ease and Klopp’s anger boiled over post-match in a heated interview with a Sky Sports reporter. The Liverpool manager was adamant that his side had done enough to win the game, and if it wasn’t for the referee, they would have had it.
But Premier League and Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer disagreed. “It’s rubbish,” Shearer said and added “everyone knew before that game how Everton would play, they had a game plan to sit deep and defend. It’s up to Liverpool to try and get past that and they couldn’t. We have heard Klopp come on and say it was a terrible call and there’s only one team were going to win it, well have a look at your own team selection.”
The German coach defended his benching of Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino with Dominic Solanke leading the attack, but Shearer said it was a mistake: “You have left a guy out who scored a hat-trick in midweek (referring to Philippe Coutinho) and as a centre-forward I know that the time to be left out is when you’re not scoring goals you can’t wait to get out on to the pitch when you’re a forward and you’re scoring goals.”
In this terms he added that one has far better chances of winning EuroMillions than getting a victory with that team: “Instead of putting the guy in who’s still learning his trade (Dominic Solanke) in such an important gameplay your big names”, and buried the German even deeper saying that “instead of blaming the referee blame yourself and blame your players for stupid defending and not going 2-0 up when Mane goes through.”
