EXCLUSIVE – David Unsworth Q & A

David Unsworth made his debut whilst still a trainee against Tottenham Hotspur in 1992, scoring a schorcher in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

He is often thought of as the unsung hero of Everton teams throughout the 1990’s, and when he left the club in the summer of 2004, many felt he could have given the club at least another year of good service, if he had been offered the appropiate chance.

So, we caught up with David, at his new club Sheffield United, for a quick fire Q & A session……..

You gave Everton 12 years of service, how hard was it to leave it all behind?

It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

What was the best game you played in for the Blues?

The 1995 FA Cup Semi Final against Spurs, my best game for the club.

How does it feel to run out to Z-Cars at Goodison Park?

I recently played at Watford with United, and they run out to Z-Cars as well, for a few seconds I thought I was in an Everton top again and the hairs on the back of my neck were on end!

Best player played alongside at Everton

Peter Beardsley

Worst?

I couldn’t possibly say!!!

Toughest opponent?

Big Dunc!!!

Was it strange coming back to Everton after a year away with West Ham and Aston Villa?

No, it was great.

What happened at Villa?

I just really wanted to come back to Everton, and once I knew they wanted me back there was no choice.

Best manager played under?

Joe Royle – just a great guy.

What’s happened to our fight from last season?

Fuck knows!!!!

Big Nev told us we need a “big character” in our dressing room, do you agree?

Yes, definately

Who was the biggest character at Everton for you?

Probably Neville himself!

Would you come back to Everton a third time if asked?

YES

Anything you didn’t do in your career you wish you had?

No.

Anything you’d change?

Nope

Which team would you love to play against?

Barcelona, away.

Why didn’t you get more caps for England?

No idea. Ask Terry Venables.

Any plans to go into management?

Definately, yes.

Who would you like to be like as a manager?

Joe Royle without a doubt.

Were you disappointed not being a part of Everton’s European “adventure” this season?

A little, but I watched every game.

What happened at Portsmouth? You did well against us, did you change your aftershave?

No! Harry {Rednapp} left and I didn’t like the guy that took over.

You’re a Blue, and you’re a friend of Wayne Rooney – where do you stand?

I think Wayne will play for Everton again in the future.

How was it in the Gwladys Street for the derby last year?

Amazing, something I will never forget.

How important is it to have pride in the shirt?

It meant everything to play for Everton. It still does.

You always seemed to score within about five minutes of the fat bloke next to me calling you names, could you hear him?

Yes.

Anything shouted at you ever made you laugh?

Yeah, something about the size of my arse!!

Anything ever made you wonder why you bother?

Never.

How do you relax outside of football?

Staying at home

What would be your perfect day off?

Staying in bed all day!!

Still keep in touch with any of the Everton lads?

Of course!

One of our visitors wants to know why his “other half” fancies you so much!

The size of my arse!!

Finally David, if you could do a “one to one” like this with any footballer, who would it be?

Bryan Robson.

NSNO would like to thank the very helpful staff at Sheffield United for making this possible, and also, of course, David Unsworth for taking the time out to answer our questions – and for bringing us good luck at the Chelsea game!!
