Colin Harvey, who enjoyed over 40 years at Goodison Park, as player, coach, manager, and later Youth academy boss, has spoken about his thoughts of the last season for Everton.
Ever the optimist, Colin believed in Everton right the way through the season, and showed great support to the team and the manager whenever he could, always having faith that they would turn a poor start around and climb back up the table to where they belong.
“Obviously it was a bad start to the season,” he told NSNO. “Going out of both European competitions so early perhaps that had an effect on the players’ confidence, which came through in their performances. It may not have even been a conscious reaction, but on some level that can’t have helped them in the Premiership.”
“However, even back in October, I felt that the team could bounce back and go on the run of form which would get them into the top half of the table, which they did do from January onwards, and it was only the last four or five weeks that it began to stutter and they had their top half finish taken away from them.
If you look at the Premiership without the top 4 sides, the only thing that separates most of the teams is a couple of consistent runs of good results, and a bit of fighting spirit, which is one thing you can’t accuse the team of lacking this season.
The end to the season couldn’t have been written better though could it? A last minute goal from Duncan Ferguson in his last game, and strikers always prefer to score goals from open play rather than penalties!
I think there needs to be some recruitment in the summer, and I feel that David will use whatever money he is given to good effect to improve his squad.”
Throughout May, we will be featuring the thoughts and opinions of various former players, as well as members of the national media and you, the fans, on the past season. Stay tuned!
