A supposed design was leaked and was met with the chagrin and disbelief of the vast majority of Evertonians. Many believed it simply couldn’t be true. This childlike monstrosity couldn’t possible be our new badge. The club wouldn’t do such a thing without consulting us would they? Sadly, it appears they would.
This new garish design is an insult to our history and what we as a club stand for. The removal of Nil Satis Nisi Optimum is the immediate and most glaring change . It is one that appears to signal yet another attempt to water down fans expectations. Do Everton believe that fans now and in the future are too stupid to learn a motto? It is our history, it is one that is passed down as a way of life from generation to generation and is part of every young blues education.
Everton appear to be trying to establish a new brand identity, one that moves away from the past. However, they will struggle to do so if they don’t consult fans and at least try and engage them. It is nothing short of lunacy to make such a big decision without doing at least some market research first. I tend to think this has Nike’s influence all over it and I have no doubt such a simplistic badge is cheaper to produce. It doesn’t make it better and I wonder if a reduction in sales might be the catalyst the club needs to be convinced that most people simple hate the design.
Everton are called, “The People’s Club”. How about a badge for the people? Surely a number of designs could have been presented for fans to have an input on? Everton is a family and they have got a number of things right. Their treatment of the Justice For The 96 campaign being a prime example. However, this change feels like a violation of our trust and a denigration of our history. Evolution is essential for a club to progress but it does not have to be at the expense of the values that we hold dear. The club haven’t asked our opinion on the badge but maybe we should give them it anyway?
