In just over 24 hours it is a case of, “So far, so good” for Bob as he has charmed the media and fans alike with words of conviction and ambition. Comparisons with Moyes were drawn by Bill Kenwright as he stated he knew Martinez was the right man for the job and held him in awe. Despite Bill being inevitably overly theatrical in his praise, the signs are certainly there that he might turn out to be a shrewd appointment.
I will gladly admit that I was not exactly banging the drum for Martinez. His record at Wigan concerned and still concerns me and I do believe that his, admittedly impressive FA Cup win has somewhat masked his failure to keep Wigan in the Premier League. However, his humble and expansive words that included…
“The fans need to know they are the most important part of this football club”.
“There are not many grounds that give you the same thrill as Goodison”.
“I remember the Everton fans applauding my players off and I think that’s a real sign of class”
All this hints at a man who gets it. He seems to understand what Everton is all about and looks an almost too perfect fit. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean this will translate to the field and at the moment his words are just that. However, it’s hard not to start to be just a little bit excited at a man who wants to achieve Champion’s League football at Everton, and is already looking to introduce fresh faces and fresh ideas.
The coming weeks will be a better indicator of how things may go as Martinez begins to put his own stamp on the team. However, I am cautiously optimistic and am willing to give him a chance. Are you?
