Romelu Lukaku

Martinez: Lukaku yellow was harsh

Lukaku EvertonKevin Friend’s decision to book Romelu Lukaku after a collision with Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has been criticised by Everton boss Roberto Martinez.

Lukaku and Lloris collided after the Frenchman dropped the ball and the Belgian striker immediately called for the physios to see to the Spurs man, but for some reason Friend decided that Lukaku was deserving of a yellow card, which Martinez says we will have to wait for him to explain his reasoning.

“You need to ask the referee what his angle was,” said Martinez.

“I saw it completely as accident.  Lloris comes out full of bravery and catches the ball, Rom is just a powerful man who is trying to get there first.

“It was a nasty collision but I didn’t see the reason for a yellow card even though we were all worried about Lloris.

“I did feel it was a bit harsh to punish Romelu with a yellow card just for trying to win the ball.”
