Distin was given a two week break away from training last month by Martinez, and has featured just once for the Blues since the 3-0 defeat in the Capital One Cup to Swansea.
He could, however, play against Lille in the Europa League this evening, but he won’t be making any appearances from the bench in future.
“Sylvain is a very important player for us, and we all know what he can bring to the side – I was really happy with his performance at Lille,” he said.
“But he is not someone I want to use on the bench at the age of 36. If he is not going to start then he is not going to be on the bench.
“I don’t think that Sylvain at his age would benefit from getting changed, warming up and coming on.
“He is still a really important player though.”
