Jagielka: We know we’ve underperformed

Phil Jagielka EvertonPhil Jagielka is adamant that Everton can begin to close the gap between themselves and the teams currently vying for a top four position.

The Toffees’ latest defeat saw them drop to eleventh in the Premier League table and lose ground on clubs like Swansea, West Ham United and Southampton in the battle for a place in either next season’s Champions League or Europa League.

And whilst he agrees that the Blues have underperformed this season, the 32 year old defender believes a good run of results over the festive period can edge Everton up the standings.

Jagielka said: “I think most things are still achievable. Things have been made a lot harder by not picking up as many points as we would have liked to but we just need to go on a run.

“The longer we leave it without going on a run the gaps between us and fourth and fifth will get bigger and bigger.

“But hopefully we can get on that run and close the gap between us and the top four.

“There’s massive pressure. We’ve underperformed so of course there is.

“We know as players there is pressure on us to perform and pick up some points. Whether it’s as much pressure as people are going to say is out of our control.”
