If Manchester City cannot overturn their tie against Barcelona in the Champions League, then the Toffees will be the only British side left in European competition ahead of their second leg clash with Dynamo Kyiv tomorrow evening – a statistic that is not lost on Martinez, who revealed his pride at this possible outcome in his pre-match press conference in Kyiv earlier today.
He said: “The fact we are the only remaining English side in this competition shows you how difficult it is to progress in Europe.
“Our demands domestically are huge, which makes it difficult for a side to still be involved in Europe going into March.
“But we have a pride in the fact we have done well so far in the competition and we have a desire to remain in the competition as long as we can.
“It has also been tough for English teams in the Champions League, which shows you how difficult our domestic league is where every game has to be fought for. We are still in this competition, though, and we keen to continue showing what we can do in this competition – and hopefully we can continue to make everybody associated with Everton proud of what we are doing in Europe.
“It has been a good journey and it is something that has helped our young players get better and gain more understanding.”
