The Blues were comfortable winners in a dreary game played out in glorious sunshine, but Martinez was upbeat and added that he didn’t think the sending off of Ashley Barnes influenced the result of the game.
He said, “We had over 20 attempts and enough opportunities to score more. We restricted them to one shot on target.
“There were a few difficult decisions for the referee, but I don’t think the result was down to them.”
On the decision to allow Ross Barkley to take his first senior penalty for the Blues – which he subsequently missed – the Spaniard insisted that there is no set penalty taker unless Romelu Lukaku is on the pitch.
The manager stated, “If Romelu had been on the pitch, he would have taken the penalty; having scored the last two.
“Ross showed responsibility and felt good in taking it and Leighton was happy for him to do so.
“Heaton deserves credit for the save, but Ross’ reaction and performance afterwards showed his quality.
“We share responsibility as a team. I am happy to have three or four penalty takers.
