John Stones and Luke Garbutt have been named in the England Under-21 squad for the upcoming European Under-21 Championships.
The young pair were called up by Under-21s coach Gareth Southgate earlier on Wednesday morning as part of his 27-man provisional squad for the upcoming summer tournament, despite Stones already acquiring 3 caps for the senior England side. Stones and Garbutt have 7 and 9 Under-21 caps for the Under-21s side respectively.
Ross Barkley, however, who was the subject of much speculation of being called up for the championship despite Roberto Martinez insisting that the 21 year old should rest following the conclusion of the current campaign, is not included in the squad.
Southgate will cut his squad down to 23 players on Monday 2nd June, before the tournament officially kicks off in the Czech Republic on 17th June.
England’s youngsters will face Portugal, Sweden and Italy in the group stages, and will advane to the semi finals if they are successful in qualifying from Group B.
