The Blues once again took a two goal lead into half time, but tonight they kept hold of their lead and earned a place in the semi finals of the Capital One Cup.
“I thought it was a fantastic occasion,” said Martinez.
“First and foremost you’re in the quarter finals of the Capital One Cup and we knew that whoever you play away from home, you need to be very mature in your performance.
“After what happened at the weekend I thought we showed a real good resilience and maturity and showed that we’ve learned a lot from the weekend.
“It was about getting through to the semi final which is a terrific feeling for the fans who were here in huge numbers.
“I thought we defended really well and at times perhaps we had opportunities where we should have taken our chances better but I thought Middlesbrough defended really well.
“The two goals were moments of exceptional quality which is never something to take for granted.
“The finish from Gerard Deulofeu and then the header from Romelu Lukaku was terrific quality but I thought that, more than anything, after going two nil up to keep the clean sheet from that point on was probably the most pleasing aspect of our performance.”
