His agent, Rob Moore, has been cited as saying that the South African could look to leave Everton at the end of the season, with Ajax touted as his destination. However, these stories are based on the South African National Football Team’s Twitter account version of Moore’s statement.
Moore was speaking to Ajax news site, Ajax Showtime, when he made the comments, which included the fact that Pienaar still has a special place in his heart for the Dutch side, as well as ties with Amsterdam. As a quick note for the Echo reporters, the original article is less than halfway down the page in a quick Google search for “Rob Moore Steven Pienaar”.
Moore actually said, “Steven likes Ajax. His partner is an Amsterdam. He also owns property there.
“Ajax is for Steven as a first love and first love always hold a special place in the heart.
“Maybe Pienaar is open for a return, but at this time it is especially important that Steven is back on the field for Everton.
“After that we will see in the coming months.
“Steven has had extremely bad luck with injuries in the last year, maybe eighteen months. It was incredible.
“But he is about to make his comeback and I believe he will soon be playing again. “
