Barkley was left out of the squad despite a strong start to the season while the flops that actually played for England in the European Championships kept their place.
Without a hint of irony after naming a squad almost identical to that which failed so badly in France, Allardyce said that it was a well thought out squad, and that dropping Barkley was a difficult decision.
He said, “It’s been a well thought-out squad. We’ve had to make some very difficult decisions, none more so than Ross Barkley.
“For him it’s disappointing but the door is always open and I have to make these decisions. I feel the squad I‘ve picked is the right one at this moment.”
Everton defender Phil Jagielka regained his place in the England set-up, meaning Evertonians are duty-bound to watch just in case he gets injured.
