A thought occurred to us last night. Today marks the last day of the 25th transfer window that NSNO has covered Everton‘s comings and goings for.
That’s 12 and a half years of writing about Everton. Mostly.
Over that time our writers have published over 8,000 stories about the Blues, our forum users have posted over 2 million posts to our Everton forums, and we have printed 40,000 fanzines which have been given away at Everton matches (and we’ve only been doing that for 18 months)
So, from humble beginnings writing about Marcus Bent signing and Wayne Rooney leaving, we’ve covered everything in between. We’ve had exclusive news such as the signings of Andy Van der Meyde (before any news organisation, anywhere), Mikel Arteta signing a permanent deal (half an hour before Sky Sports News, who had a reporter in the room at the time he signed it), and Steven Pienaar rejoining from Spurs (although he gave us a squeaky bum when he was named as substitute for Spurs on deadline day!)
And we’ve had some absolute howlers as well! From the message being sent that Everton had made a £5m offer for Nicolas Anelka being translated as we’d signed him for £5m by the time it had been written up (and very nearly setting our old server on fire in the process!) to Kevin Nolan being “spotted” at Bellfield despite being 6,000 miles away in Hong Kong. There was also that time when we told you that James McFadden was coming back, although sadly that one was true.
Through all that time our team of Evertonian writers has been working hard to make sure we keep you, our fellow Evertonians, up to date with everything going on (and coming in) to Goodison Park. We even had someone tail Nikica Jelavic when he left Goodison to make sure he came back to sign his contract! Our forum users have commented, laughed at, and cried at, some of the rumours going around about Everton, but our mantra has remained – we hear stuff, we pass it on.
Two years ago we had a meeting cancelled at Finch Farm due to Aaron Lennon coming in on loan. So we went down anyway and sat outside in the freezing cold, along with four other Everton fans and a Norwegian (who else!) TV crew. Everton’s youth teams ribbed us on the way out with news that Steve Sidwell was inside waiting to sign. Oh how we laughed, but wouldn’t have put it past the previous manager.
Last summer we did a Facebook Live thingy and got shown around the Bramley Moore site (well, shown off it) by a security guard whose information was eerily accurate considering he was a Kopite, and Enner Valencia and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
This year, we’re staying in the warm. We’re getting on a bit, it’s windy outside, Bally has a gammy leg, and there’s a general feeling that whenever we go out in the hope of news, nothing happens.
Our team of writers will be glued to Twitter, Sky Sports News, and texting our “contacts” every twenty minutes until they either give us some information, or turn their phones off.
Here’s hoping we have a signing worth celebrating this evening!
