Funes Mori departs as Everton show new era of tough business

Everton kit 2018Everton defender Ramiro Funes Mori has left Goodison Park for Villarreal in a deal that some say could be worth up to £17.5m amid talks that the Blues want big money for players no longer required.

Funes Mori will always be remembered for his sending off at Anfield for his tackle on Divock Origi before kissing the Everton badge as he left the pitch, leaving the Blues with no central defensive cover before an FA Cup semi final at Wembley.

A tall, capable defender, he never quite found his feet – sometimes literally – at Everton, but reports of a £17.5m deal should be appreciated by Evertonians.

Funes Mori signed for around £9m after a protracted deal and to make a profit on a player who is no longer required at Everton is very successful business.

There are talks, too, that the Blues want £12m for Muhammed Besic – who signed for £5m four years ago and has failed to make a dent in the first team.

Marcel Brands comes with a reputation for being a tough negotiator, and these deals show exactly why.
