Monday night’s visit of Watford to Goodison Park will be one of the most hotly anticipated games on the fixture list for the visitors as they look to get one over their former boss Marco Silva at Everton.
They will have a tough job though, as Silva has hit the ground running with the Blues and has Everton in 6th place in the Premier League table, meaning you’d need to use a 10bet referrer code if you wanted to get decent odds on anything but a home win.
Silva was sacked by Watford last season after Everton made a failed approach to bring him to Goodison Park, and the Blues ended up with Sam Allardyce as short-term boss, but Silva has turned that rut around almost immediately.
The visitors, though, have a bit of recent success against Everton to spur them on into this game, having won 3-2 two seasons ago and on the same date that they come to Goodison. In fact, Everton have to go back 41 years to find a win on the record chart for December 10th, when Bob Latchford and Mick Buckley scored in a 3-0 win over Middlesbrough at Goodison Park.
December 10th has, it has to be said, been a pretty rotten date to play football in an Everton shirt down the years, with 6-0 and 4-0 defeats to Arsenal and Blackpool respectively in the 50’s and 60’s. But as this year’s Merseyside derby almost proved, Marco Silva doesn’t go much for tradition!
He will, though, be happier to hear that Watford are not a side that Everton fear very often. Last season’s defeat under Allardyce was one of only four times the visitors have ever beaten the Blues, with Ronald Koeman providing them with another win the season before at Vicarage Road.
In 26 meetings between the sides Everton have scored 57 goals, conceding just 31, the most famous of those meetings coming at Wembley in 1984, when Graeme Sharp and Andy Gray wrote their names into the Everton history books by scoring the goals that won us the FA Cup and set the Blues on the road to dominating the game in England.
Evertonians held aloft a banner that said “Sorry Elton, I guess that’s why they call us the Blues” that day, which the then-Watford Chairman will have seen, and on Monday Everton fans will be hoping that Marco Silva can give his former side the blues and return his current charges to winning ways.
