Steven Naismith

It’s a windfall for Everton, but only just

Everton will see an unexpected windfall of £1M this summer after Norwich gained their promotion to the Premiership FreeTips.com reported today.

Norwich has invoked an unexpected clause in the contract of player Steven Naismith who Everton sold to the Canaries three and a half years ago. His contract stated that if Norwich ever won promotion to the Premiership, then they would have to pay his former club the bonus of £1M. A clause that doesn’t often get invoked but is common when selling players to lower league clubs, so if the receiving club ends up becoming a direct rival of the selling club then they get more money.

This is what happened with Norwich this year, having gained promotion from the Championship. What makes matters even more slightly strange is that the player in question Naismith doesn’t even play for Norwich any more, having been loaned out to Hearts following a disappointing performance at Norwich. However, the clause states that at any time during the contract period, if the club is promoted, then the fee becomes due. This comes in at the last minute as Naismith’s contract was due to expire this summer, so Everton is only just getting their fee. Considering however that Naismith joined Everton from Rangers for free, they haven’t done badly raking in some £9m from the player.

Everton has certainly not shied away from spending money, and the £1M windfall is not expected to even make a dent in their spending if recent transfers have been anything to go by. Marco Silva has already spent over £80M on players such as Richarlison and Lucas Digne so far in previous transfer windows. For much of the season, however, this investment in players didn’t seem to be paying off as Everton have struggled in form. However, a strong end to the season, which included a 4-0 win over Manchester United, has shown that once the players have embedded themselves properly into the squad, then the money was perhaps well spent. Further investments are likely as Andre Gomes’s loan period comes to an end, and the club will look to off-load him to boost their potential spending power.

Norwich will not, however, be embarking on a spending spree of their own, and their primary focus, much like any other recently promoted to the Premiership club, will be on surviving the season and remaining in the top flight. A difficult task given the power spenders in the Premiership along with the wealth of talent. Though it is not unheard of, Norwich can only hope to emulate the likes of Leicester City who not only managed to stay up but went on to win the Premiership in the 2015/16 season, in a Cinderella story for all time.

Although Naismith will not be a part of Norwich’s premiership push having already moved on to Hearts. He is a player that will not be missed, in his forty-eight appearances for the club, he only managed to hit the back of the net some eight times.
