After Everton once again finished eighth in the Premier League table, Marco Silva faces a key summer on the recruitment front if the Toffees are to mount a more serious challenge to bring European football back to Goodison Park.
They had the joint-fifth best defence and fourth best clean sheet record in the division, so that suggests it may be other areas which need attention. A top six finish is rated a 6/1 chance for Everton with bet365, and it’s 20/1 for a Top 4 finish, so here are three potential summer signings for the Toffees to help realise those ambitions.
Serbia striker Aleksandar Mitrovic scored almost a third of Fulham’s 34 goals as the Craven Cottage club were immediately relegated back to the Championship. As a focal point for attack, however, he has clearly demonstrated he can cut it in the Premier League now.
When Mitrovic first came over to England and played for Newcastle United, discipline and managing his aggression were obvious problems. Given he previously plied his trade on Tyneside and is also a target man type of centre forward, comparisons with Everton icon Duncan Ferguson are easily made.
BetVictor offer odds of 2/1 that Mitrovic leaves London for the Toffees in this transfer window. He looks to be Silva’s main striking target at this stage and probably does need to leave Fulham to be sure of his international place with young Luka Jovic really catching the eye in the Bundesliga this season. Mitrovic is also said to interest West Ham United and Southampton.
Belgium right back Thomas Meunier is part of his country’s golden generation and has spent the last three seasons with PSG in France. He has made noises suggesting he could be on his way from the Parc des Princes this summer, however, and that has alerted Everton.
Compatriots like Romelu Lukaku and Kevin Mirallas have done well on the blue half of Merseyside, but Silva’s hopes of getting a clear run on Meunier look slim. Manchester United may well be in the market for him, and their need for defensive recruits is arguably greater than the Toffees’.
With SkyBet going 7/2 about Meunier moving to Goodison Park this summer, he would certainly provide serious competition for Seamus Coleman down that side of defence. For even more markets on Everton, check the list of best bookmakers in UK at freebets.uk.
The permanent signing of Portugal midfielder Andre Gomes from Barcelona, like that of France defender Kurt Zouma from Chelsea, must surely be a priority for the Toffees this summer. Both have played well by and large on Merseyside, but there are other factors at work.
Everton don’t own either player, who each spent the past campaign on loan at Goodison Park, so the ball is not entirely in their court. With Zouma, it is the threat of a transfer ban handed down to Chelsea which may or may not be overturned on appeal.
As for Gomes’ parent club Barca are expected to make changes to their squad this summer. They may sell him to the highest bidder with Tottenham a potential permanent destination. Betfred can’t split Spurs and the Toffees, making both teams evens for his signature.
