It's one thing handing over a functional team to an untested manager such as if Guardiola was in hospital for a few weeks and Arteta took over, chances are Man City would autopilot their way to decent results.

It's quite another to hand over the squad as we have it right now to an inexperienced manager and expect a team to be built on their first try. It'd be a huge gamble. Seriously can't fathom it really.

Why even Arteta? If we're going by good Everton players then surely we should be giving Rooney the player/manager role.

This prove yourself in the lower leagues is bullshit thinking from 100 years ago and belongs in the past. people like Beckenbauer, Dalglish,  were brilliant managers straight from the get go. The best manager in the world cut his teeth as a coach. The next best, Zidane was also a reserve team coach. Some people have it. And if an individual has the the ability and is recognized as such by his peers it is stupid to pass it up just to make sure he can cut it the lower tier of the English leagues. We don't expect that from top players so why do it to managers?

Thinking about it a bit more, I wonder if there's something about identity in there as well. With the last few years of ups and mostly downs, a lot of people possibly feel like we've lost a bit of Everton identity and maybe the desire for Arteta has a bit of that in it. Bring back a familiar, popular face again and feel a bit more like Everton.

Oh and some people defo fancy him as well.

We need to find the next Pep, Zidane etc. We need to find the exception. it's going to take trial and error, we need to find the Pocchetino before he is at Spurs for example. otherwise we stuck fighting for 6th in perpetuity

Re Poch, he’d never finished higher than 8th in the league anywhere before he went to Spurs.

That sort of record wouldn’t preclude Silva from doing the same sort of progression.

I think you’re right bd but I think the reason I’m willing to give arteta a go is because I find silva a bit underwhelming

I'm not sold on Silva bit we can't afford "trial error" anymore, we've gone through 3 managers in recent years, cost a fortune in compo and spent a fortune on players. We need someone who will hit the ground running and hopefully with Brands build something here, not take a punt on a complete unknown as a manager.

Arteta is too big a risk at this stage in the clubs transformation imo. I think we should be interviewing everyone we've sounded out though. Then take what time we can afford to take, closed season, to get it right.

Not sure what you're getting at, given Pochettino had been a manager for over 5 years before he joined Spurs.

Silva isn't trial an error?

I don't think he is a bad appointment. He does seem to have his teams playing better quickly and hopefully he can sustain that with us. We have tried the tried and tested and it has failed. The closest we have come to the top was when we took a bit of a chance on Martinez.
