Stoke City

Playing on a Wednesday night away to Stoke City is no longer the terrifying prospect that prevented Lionel Messi from joining a Premier League club. Gone are the days of Rory Delap throw-ins and Tony Pulis baseball caps, Stoke are now a modern football delight with flair and skill pulsating throughout the side as typified by goalkeeper Lee Grant and Peter Crouch combining more times (20) than any other against Manchester United at the weekend. The good news for the pessimistic Evertonians out there is that Peter Crouch is one goal away from his 100th Premier League goal and Mark Hughes is just a victory away from his 50th win as Stoke City manager. The more optimistic of Evertonians will be buoyed by the fact that Glenn Whelan is still starting matches in Premier League football, no really, he is. Stoke managed a point against Manchester United at the weekend but they haven't beaten any of the eight league teams above them in nine league matches (D3 L6) so far this season and they've conceded 23 goals in the process.

Marko Arnautovic could have been a replacement for Kevin Mirallas in the summer but the Austrian just couldn't get enough of the people and scenery that Stoke has to offer and signed a new contract with the Potters. Both have picked up their form in recent weeks and they both have incredibly similar stats so far this season. Not only have they scored and assisted the same amount of goals but they've also created the same amount of chances (24) and they've posted the same number of shots on goal (33) but Mirallas has had less time on the pitch, hence the better statistics. Arnautovic can't shoot very well or pass very well and that's the sort of analysis NSNO pay me to provide.

Possible Line-Ups

Everton

Despite accusations of poor sportsmanship from 'Disgracefully Sacked Former England Manager Sam Allardyce™', Everton pulled off a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace to make it 13 points from their last five Premier League matches and to put themselves into a league of their own behind Manchester United in 6th and ahead of West Brom in 8th. Tom Davies has provided a goal and two assists in his three Premier League starts for Everton. Not only have the Toffees won all those matches to nil but Everton have seen 13 league goals scored and 0 conceded in all the time Davies has been on the pitch this season. It's the first time Everton have won three consecutive league fixtures without conceding a goal since January 2010 and they haven't gone four league victories without conceding since March 1986 when they went on a five match run. Astonishingly, even after all these years, Mark Hughes is still a cunt.

Ronald Koeman is starting to leave his mark on an Everton side that have had a difficult couple of league campaigns under Roberto Martinez. The approach to the recent run of victories is indicative of the identity that Koeman wants to create at Everton; from the clinical display against City which produced the finest performance to date of the Koeman era to the persistence which led to victories over Southampton and Crystal Palace, all with a clean sheet intact. Winning over the fans has been difficult but a home record of 22 points from 11 home matches will certainly help, especially when considering Everton took just 13 points from the same amount of home fixtures last season. In fact, Everton only took 23 points from all home matches last season and three of those points were down to David Unsworth's final day victory over Norwich.

Love it shogs.

The Christmas time hammering we took from them under Martinez was one of my real watershed moments under that regime, and in general recently I feel they've come out on top.

But we've done West Ham, we've done Southampton and we've done city...so I feel like we're maybe on then march righting those wrongs and these are next up.

I'd enjoy a win here an awful lot, and I think it would be another big statement from big ron's dirty bastards.

It's not on TV - West Ham v Man City is the live game that night.

The computer always seems to schedule this game for the coldest night of the year and the ground has it's own mini climate which is 5° lower than anywhere else. shakeyheadman

Only a victory can save us from hypothermia.

I hate this fixture. Always tough away at Stoke and they just picked up a 1-1 draw with United (nearly won it). But they will be looking at us thinking it will be a very tough game and because of our recent form we should really be getting something here. I think it will be a score draw.

2-0 win.

They are a really poor side and I think we're going to hand out a big beating

Last 9 home league games they've won 4 drawn 4 and lost 1 so it's not as though they've been losing a lot of home games in the last 3 months. They have a few unpredictable players and Hughes' sides are generally inconsistent but when on a decent run they are normally solid and make the games tough.

The form we are in yes we have a good chance of winning, but not an easy game for sure.

Yeah, when did people start thinking these type of games were easy?

It's a cliche, but away from home no game is easy.

I'd be very happy with a win, but content to get a draw.

I think there types of games are the ones where if you're still 0-0 after 70 you just make sure you come away with at least a point.

Terrifies me when i see optimistic Evertonians - because i know they will be the ones most disappointed when we fuck things up. Like always.

The Stoke thing specifically though? They are the literal poster child for how hard the premier league is. This fixture is the one they say foreigners struggle with specifically

Made up with his recent form.

Thought he was done as an Everton player but he's really staked his claim.

Apart from Lukaku he's the only player you'll back to take a chance when he gets it.

As you say, he's not had the best of seasons but he's still chipped in.

Think he's realised he's got it as good as he can get here. He missed the chance of his big move a season back, so is either knuckle down and become part of the Everton project, or spend the rest of his career in midtable mediocrity at someone like Schalke.

Mirallas has always been one of those players who takes a few games to get up to speed. He never really got a decent run of games over the last couple years so his form dropped away badly even though there was times he should have been given a chance over others, even this season took a while to get going. But he's starting to look back to his best over the last few games he's played so can hopefully stay fit and keep on improving. On his game, he's a very good player.

We've heard a summarised version of that (He wasn't arsed but now he seems to have realised what it takes) every 12-18 months of Mirallas' career here. He then goes missing for a few months (both figuratively on the pitch, then literally when a manager bins him off for a bit)

I think that is the best representation I have seen of our formation. The 5-3-2, 3-5-2 or christmas tree formation don't cut it- although Mirallas seems to drift everywhere and not really have a position when we have possession.

Mirallas and Lukaku are two of the best finishers you want as a front two in the league to be honest. When either of them are in on goal you don't feel they're gonna miss. The trick is to be playing them both in on a more regular basis now Mirallas is looking sharp again.
Title: Re: Stoke City v Everton
Post by: cyberduck on January 26, 2017, 02:29:53 AM
Mirallas has played under 3 managers at Everton and has never been an automatic choice.

He's had good moments but far too few. I don't think he's been blighted by injuries but am happy to be corrected on that point.

I would love him to be good enough but when he's not playing well he provides very little going forward. He's not very good defensively and at times he's reckless with some of his challenges and puts us at risk.

The current formation certainly suits them both as they have more freedom to find space and it is a waste for Mirallas to be constantly on the wing

We can afford him some R&R before bringing him back in I suppose with the way things are.

Nobody deserves to drop out but you have to think his long term 2 are Morgan and Gana...

Rather have him as a bench option than McCarthy, or at least back for the weekend (when we should be rotating some in midfield).

Except he sounds like someone to bring back the 'glory' days           ;)
Had to google Holegate and coincidentally it's a town situated not far from The Bell Inn.

Ronnie having a dig at the flop

He seems to be so businesslike, you hear these stories and you wonder how much of his heart is in it... and then he pops up with a little gem like this.

Subtle but cheeky.

And all of a sudden you think - "He knows... he KNOWS!"

It's tempting to start to check out the next few rounds of fixtures to see where we could make up points on the teams above us.

Then you snap out of it and realise it's Everton so tomorrow they'll snuff out that optimism with a dog shite performance and ruin it all.

We've genuinely got a boss run in for the next two months then have a tough April.

I remember in Martinezs first season when we were 8 points off Arsenal around this time.

I said we'd make those points up and overtake them when the came to Goodison. We had a favourable run in and Arsenal were due their annual implosion.

It's more difficult to make ground this year and there's a lot of teams to overtake, but it just takes one team to go in a bad run and if we follow our pattern of recent form we could take advantage.

As you say though, it's Everton and we'll end up losing 2-1 tomorrow night and have calls of the season being over.

True. Arsenal have already made their first move to close in on that much-coveted 4th spot.

We're effectively going into the 1st of 16 games that if we don't win finish the season.

I'm not saying we need to win all 16(It won't be far off), but we need to keep that distance to 6th manageable to make it seem like there's a goal.

I think one or two of the top 6 will be very catchable, if we can put a run of wins on the board.

They're all dropping points, and will continue to (especially when playing each other, naturally).

I'm looking forward to the day when the media have to acknowledge that it's a top 7, not a top 6.

If we get within a couple of points of 6th, and have a decent gap to 8th then it'll become the 7.  A win tonight and we're closer to 2nd than 9th.

Be interesting to see if the 10 day break is a help or a hindrance. You'd like to think it's given us lots of time to work on things in training, and to accommodate Schneiderlin and Lookman a lot more into the team ethos. Hopefully we'll fly out of the blocks.

But then we're Everton, and we'll probably be 1 nil down inside 5 minutes to a shite goal from a poorly cleared corner.

A win genuinely does set up a great crack at a run in.

To be 8pts off 2nd with 45 points to play for and looking like we're coming into form at least means the team talks and midweek training sessions should have a goal in mind.
There's no dead wood around the place to drag everyone down, the players who are left all know they have a great chance of an extended run in the side so it's a perfect scenario to show Koeman they deserve to be a regular next season.

Please, please don't be typically Everton tonight and fuck us all over before it's begun.

I think he'll stick with the 11 who started at Palace. They've done nothing wrong, and if it's not broke as the saying goes, there's no need to fix it. It's going to be tough getting a result here though. If we do, look out Chelsea. ;)

I'd stick with the winning team but once Gueye  gets up and running again i'd have him start alongside Davies and Shneid and Barry on the bench for when we need his experience in holding a lead late on.. he can't do 90 so use him when you need what he's got..

Is that definitely an own goal? Was Coleman's cross/shot not on target?

If it was a shot, would that have made a difference as to offside?

Lukaku, being at the far post, was not in the goalkeeper's line of sight. I guess it could be argued that Lukaku's offside position had an influence on the goal but I think the law is about its effect on goalkeepers not defenders.

Shite so far really, lucky to be at 1-1. We look ok on the ball but everytime we lose it it looks like Stoke are going to score. Something has to change we are being giving the run around by the likes of Adam, Allen, Crouch and Whelan.

I'm hopeful for the second half though, we are unlikely to be that bad again and we have good options on the bench.

BBC

Niasse's not bad
Manchester United 0-0 Hull City

Simon Stone
BBC Sport at Old Trafford

Oumar Niasse will go down as one of Everton's least successful buys.

For the £13.5m Roberto Martinez spent on the Senegal forward, Everton got two starts and five substitute appearances in a little under 12 months.

Hull boss Marco Silva evidently was not put off by such damning statistics - and Niasse looks OK.

Not in the Didier Drogba class I grant you, but not the useless player those statistics would suggest.

Mark Huges whole game plan is:

"Give it to that gap tooth, fat cunt that thinks he's Pirlo and get him to twat it up to that gangly giraffe and hope it gets something on the end of it"

I'd been led to believe by the media that Stoke play better football these days. I disagree. If they had Rory Delap still there they'd utilitise that throw in to the max.

On balance, we gave them about 4 golden chances in the first half so to some degree we got away with it. We did improve and probably had the best of the second half but without ever having consistent pressure on their goal. That Davies chance was probably the one.

Overall while a win was probably required if we're seriously chasing Europe, a point away from home is not a bad thing. Still building a decent run these last few games.

I got in from work about 20 mins ago. The game sounds standard Stoke fare (shite, niggly, negative and ugly - or am I just listing my ex-wives now) - but I'd really like to hear about Schneidelin and Lookman  :)

Were they also somewhat lacking in height? :)

1 yellow from 21 fouls? I don't want to criticise the ref too much as he showed bigballs overruling the linesman, but fuck me.

I think the yellow was for dissent. When you get soft refs. like this teams like Stoke will have the advantage.

Not a bad result but slightly disappointing as it was a winnable game.  A fair few positives to be taken, particularly the youngsters with Davies again and also Lookman looks to have some proper talent if he can harness it.  Schneiderlin I think will be class once he's properly up to speed too.

Defensively we looked suspect still though, it still seems far too simple to put us in to panic  mode or at least uncomfortable mode with a half decent ball in to the area.  We're always liable to concede a goal which is something needs to be sorted.

It also feels like every time I watch us play Stoke at their place that I'm left with the impression that their fans genuinely don't understand the game of football and its rules.  Such a misplaced persecution complex they've got.

On a different note, Barkley's defensive work and tackling really has come on leaps and bounds. Admittedly, he started from absolute zero, but if anything that makes it an even bigger achievement.

He's edging closer to being a well-rounded player.

Or maybe they're in on the ruse that the players play: after every foul act like you don't even understand how any sane person could've thought your actions were worthy of a free kick. After a while any referee will start to doubt himself, and forget to book them.

True. However, with that game plan they were very unlucky not winning today.

He has something really special.

Morgs badly faded in the second half and put us in danger on a few occasions, but you can see the quality he possesses.

Good first game from Schneiderlin. Looks classy.

Just want Lookman to get the ball all the time. Like when Rooney first played for us. Looks like he'll be a threat and will put a shift in too.

Lucky to get to half time level but much better once we changed the formation. Better team in second half. Not many chances but looked like the most likely to score.

Thought we got lucky really even though the goal was legit. Dirty side but we needed more supply to Rom and better passing but Davies continues to shine but a bit sloppy tonight. Thought Robles was our saviour or we'd have lost.. Stek would have fucked 2 of those efforts up so deserves to stay benched. Barkley did okay but they set out to stem is and it worked largely. I'm impressed by Lookman and his willingness to have a shot but didn't really get in to the game. Needs a start so he can develop his game and does more than mirallas in the time he comes on than the latter. Fair result overall but at least utd didn't win

Few comments on tonight. Firstly for the first time Holgate's inexperience showed but he was up against a good player. Wondered if RK should have pulled Seamus deeper, sooner,  to help him. Part of the learning curve and we have to be patient.
Davies looked so comfortable and confident it's hard to believe he's so young. Worked well with Lookman when he came on.
We didn't play as well as we could but the encouraging results lately have certainly given us confidence on the ball. I'm beginning to feel that playing the ball our from the back is working and I'm not as scared waiting for the poor pass to be intercepted and a goal against.
Overall not a game that will live long in the memory but a point is a point and that's not guaranteed at Stoke, just felt that we could have won that.

Playing from the back is working because you've got the energy of Davies and a much improved work rate from Ross creating space to receive passes.  So much of an upgrade from old McCarthy hiding next to players, Ross standing still, and the wide midfielders miles away and marked.

A 1-1 away at a team like Stoke isn't the end of the world, not beating Bournemouth next though would suggest we aren't as good as we thought we were the last few weeks.

I think it'll be back to winning ways with Bournemouth stuttering at the moment and then heading towards 10 unbeaten.

Does anyone remember Koeman's admission that we can't win physical battles? I think he'll be pleased with the change.

Funes Mori with one of the all time worst defensive performances I've ever seen last night.

How many times does he get done with that ball over his head?

Dreadful defender.

I do love how there's no inbetween with Funes Mori. You rather rate him or think he's an absolute disaster.

FuMo flatters to deceive. His barnstorming runs from defence and thunderbolt left foot shots straight at the defender hide woeful defensive inadequacies.
