Post by: Jimmywhack on July 22, 2016, 04:53:17 PM
Dunno if @Shogun (http://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=1108) is doing threads for the friendlies, if he is he can take over this

Anyway

Barnsley away tomoz
Seems to be on the same channels as last weeks game - ESPN3 and Fox2 NL so should be a few streams around

Be nice to see a few of the more familiar faces back and hopefully a chance to have a look at Tarashaj too

What's the deal with this anyway?  We played them last year in the cup so why are we playing them in a friendly?  Surely John Stones has got something to do with this.

Looking forward to the game though.

To start, I'd like to see the following...

GK: Robles/Stekelenburg (it really doesn't matter)
RB: Coleman
CB: Jagielka
CB: Funes Mori (I'm assuming Stones is gone)
LB: Baines
CM: Davies
CM: Barkley
AM: Dowell
RW: Deulofeu
ST: Niasse (just for fun)
LW: Mirallas

John Stones will miss a reunion with his former club Barnsley on Saturday because of a slight injury suffered on his return to training. The Everton defender, who is expected to leave for Manchester City this summer, and the captain Phil Jagielka have been ruled out of the friendly at Oakwell with Koeman reluctant to risks longer-term injuries. Stones is scheduled to appear against MK Dons on Tuesday but Jagielka will need longer to recover from a hamstring problem ( Guardian )

Post by: kramer0 on July 23, 2016, 08:20:25 PM
I'm sure Barnsley are going to have a lovely time trying to mark Deulofeu, Mirallas, and Dowell today.

Edit: McCarthy is probably carrying a knock. It's also wise from Koeman to leave all of the recent arrivals on the bench to start; we don't want to give them too much work too soon.

Double Edit: Barnsley left Bree on the bench! I hope he gets on at some point.

Never did get this whole Besic obsession. Not progressed in 2 years here and bought on a whim off the back of one good performance. Typical slapdash Martinez recruitment.
In my opinion we're in dire need of a huge big money central midfield signing. If they are out there.

I'm much happier with the closing down we've been doing today. It's quite clear we're rusty and as mentioned previously, we're looking ropey on crosses and corners. Robles has made a few good saves but he's also made a couple of bad gaffs. Doesn't look likely he's going to make the grade. Happy with the youngsters though, they're making a few mistake but showing decent skills. :)

He can pass the ball, but other than that, he just lumbers around not affecting the game, not providing any sort of defensive shield and looking like a Championship player. He's got the swagger of a world class player as well, which annoys me even more.

I'm elated that we've kept the Besic/Gibson axis-of-crap together while removing Dowell.

It's pre-season. Why not let Barkley play deeper? Or at least bring on Cleverley? He's not spectacular, but he passes and moves better than the aforementioned AoC members.

Or move Davies to his natural position?! Argh. I hope Koeman's having one last good look at these two before moving onto a better plan.

Still compared to the seasons under Roberto where we actually had two on the pitch actually playing in the DM role with one of them being completely useless. Having a defensive midfielder on the pitch playing a completely different role, being more box to box and getting involved in the oppositions half has me at ease.

You have to make the players you have play better and if they're not taking out of their comfort zone and learn to get involved in both phases of the play then you'll see the same useless shite that we have had for the last two seasons.

I know they have the advantage of playing against a tired Barnsley, but Cleverley/Grant have been much sharper in possession than the AoC from the first half.

Caveat: McGeady has also looked pretty good so performances here might not count for much.

As I was saying, Barkley just needs to act on instinct and there you go...

Previously he would've held onto the ball too long, or tried to find a team-mate and the chance would be gone.

Absolutely.

Our attacking is much simpler and faster, if somewhat direct. We play 15-20 yard passes up, then from a quick turn we repeat it. Not the most complicated strategy in the world and clearly we'll need to diversify, but it's a start.

We also tried to close down in a more organised manner. It didn't always work, but you could see that players knew what their job was when pressing.

I know it's only been two nothing friendlies so far but you can see why Koeman hasn't been flying out the traps to spend money willy nilly, we've lots of quality in there which wasn't best utilised the past few years. It only really needs supplementing with a few real top drawer players, not 4-5 decent ones. Goalkeeper and centre midfield being the two priorities, Stones' departure notwithstanding.

One thing I noticed there today and really liked, it looks as though Ron has gained instant respect.

He strikes me as the type of man who commands it, unlike Roberto who was a little too "nicey nicey" the players knew that they could get away with murder under Roberto, Koeman wont have any of that shit.

I don't reckon these boards will be full of half the fume that they have been in the past few years. Simply because if Koeman does something that would have got Martinez five threads full of abuse we'll all just kind of go 'Yeh I can see what he was thinking there', simply because he's Ronald Koeman and he's forgotten more about football than all us will ever know put together.

Koeman should get at least a season of being below-expectations before we really start fuming. (Unless we're in a relegation battle.)

Maybe I'm remembering things incorrectly, but the Martinez abuse wasn't particularly bad or widespread until last winter. He had some detractors based on 2014/15, but most of us were still on board until that horrid run in December '15 and January '16, culminating in the League Cup semi-final loss to City. In my memory, that's when most of us turned on him. A subpar season-and-a-half (with some admittedly good results in European and domestic cups) is a lot of time for a fanbase to wait before they start calling for the manager's head.

I think most Evertonians will afford Ronald Koeman the same patience they afforded Roberto Martinez, and if recent evidence is anything to go on, it won't be merely because of Koeman's reputation (although his reputation will certainly help, as you said).

Early shout on Dowell but wouldn't expect him to feature loads anyway. We blatantly need a right back to push Seamus and a first choice keeper. I think that Gibson, Mc Carthy, Barry, Besic, Cleverley is excessive in midfield and would like us to bring in a great player and ship one of them out.

We obviously need another striker as well.

Yes, his inability to recognise and acknowledge that we have a problem must have been a major factor.

At times we looked utterly hopeless under Moyes, worse than under Martinez, but he never failed to admit that we were struggling, even if he instantly trotted out a bunch of excuses afterwards.

He looked good with the ball into his feet and had some really good interplay. Would play a nice ball and move straight away for the return and good appreciation of whats around him when it went in to him. Didnt look overly quick, wasnt big didnt really get to see how strong he is but did reasonably well. Be interesting to see if his hold up and link play is that good in a proper game with intensity.

thought he looked quite lost at times to be honest, and was forever wandering offside which negated the only real pass available to whoever had the ball

showed some good touches, but he's been playing at a much lower level than at Everton and it shows.  he may well have what it takes, but he needs to raise his game a lot.

We won't see it until we hit a rough patch, how he reacts and how we recover from it. That's what really matters in a manager.

Last season Southampton went through and awful period during Christmas. Losing something like five games in a row, and there was talk he was going to walk or even be sacked if I recall.

He changed the team, lobbed Shane long in and they marched up the table.

I agree with that the sign of a good manager is how he reacts and adapts during a poor period.

This is something Moyes was brilliant at. Martinez on the other hand, was not.
