Confident we'll play very well in this one. Just hope the chances are taken when presented.

Four at the back is a distinct possibility but not certain if Lookman is ready to start yet.

I'd drop Barkley too the bench
I just think in current form Davies would be most successful in picking them forward passes out

I'd bring Jags in for Holgate after Wednesday's showing.

Gana on the bench for me. I can't see how MS or Davies can be dropped.

Barkley shouldn't be either, I think he was decent on Wednesday, kept his head up a lot more and looked to regain possession if he lost it.

Post by: toffee_scot on February 03, 2017, 04:45:20 PM
I don't think I would change the team too much, if at all. Having Gana creates a nice problem regarding who to field in central midfield but he hadn't been playing all that great in the last couple of games before African Nations so I'd be happy if he started from the bench.

With no new injuries, Koeman has a nice problem on his hands, especially now Gana is back, Davies deserves to start again as does Schneiderlin and Barkley so where does Gana fit back in, also be interesting to see what he does with Lookman, start him ahead of Mirallas maybe?

I dont think Mirallas is great anymore and I think he will be on Koemans 'hit list' in the summer for being replaced. Well, he'd not be playing if Bolasie hadnt got injured but I do think at the moment it will help lookman having sub appearances against tired defences while he gets used to the speed of the league.

I'd go back to a back 4 and have the shape we finished the Stoke game with;

Robles

Coleman Williams Mori Baines

Gueye Schneirderlin Davies

Barkley Lukaku Mirallas

Personally, I'd ease Gana back in and would leave him on the bench for this one. Bournemouth are usually quite open and let you play, so I'm not sure we need an excess of tackling midfielders to play them at home.

I also think it's harsh to drop Holgate based on one bad game, when he's been generally excellent otherwise. I agree with others that Lookman will start over Mirallas.

I'd go:

                       Robles
         Holgate Williams Funes Mori
Coleman                                     Baines
            Schneiderlin    Davies
         Barkley                   Lookman
                       Lukaku

Mirallas wasn't poor on Wednesday, but was heading towards that jaded average performance we see so often. Starting Lookman at home against a beatable Bournemouth, won't be the gamble of the century. Mirallas should be available to cover if Ademola bombs, but that's not something I'm expecting him to do though. Looking forward to this kids full debut. :)

Been a lifelong Everton fan and am finally making my first game tomorrow! I cant wait. Travelling from Ireland tomorrow and I'm bringing my 7 yr old son with me. Hoping he gets bitten by the blue bug, far too many red jerseys over here for my liking! Any tips or advice for our visit would be greatly appreciated.

God what's the little fella done to deserve a life sentence at 7?

Hope you have a great day. Maybe stick around afterwards and get some photos and autographs with the players? Seamus is bound to stop for a chat with a fellow countryman.

KOEMAN ON MIDFIELD AND KEEPER OPTIONS

Midfielders:

"Gana [Gueye] was one of the key players before, but everyone knows at the moment we have five good midfield players.

"It’s a tough decision for the manager but I like to have it.

"Yes I have made the decision, I always make it early.. but I won’t tell."

I watched the press conference and although I'm no expert, Koeman's body language told me that Gana will start tomorrow  :snigger:

Hang around outside the player entrance at the Park End, maybe have a look around the fan park before the game as well, always plenty to do and see on there.

With Gueye having just come back I wouldn't pay him Saturday and I would have given him a couple of days of training as well.

He's run his arse off for us already this season and we are under no pressure to throw him back in. McCarthy can perform the same role adequately if needed.

Or main issue is the defence now, not centre midfield.

As for Lookman I wouldn't be surprised to see him start soon. Mirallas needs to watch his back though I agree on that.

Be the Park End carpark, there'll be a few people hanging about to do the same so you'll find the best place. You could maybe even just ask a steward around there? Not sure how long the wait is but I'm sure it'll be worth it to get the pics of him with them, and yourself of course.

Don't let him have to many Changs beforehand though you'll be up and down all the first half!

Gonna be interesting though to see how he sets up the team for this one - Holgate seems like the one to drop but doing so means we play a back 4, lot of tactical nuances for how this one plays out

Think he will go back four but as at Stoke schneirdelein or Barry will basically split the cbs when we have the ball so Coleman and baines can provide width

Would stick with the 3-4-3 if it were me. I thought we looked like we had a much better idea of how to pass the ball and build play with that system and while our possession increased in the second half it was less threatening.

I wasn't saying drop Holgate because he had a poor game - I just want to see how we'd cope with 3 mobile CMs in front of the defence at home to a team who will likely be happy to come for a point.

The only time I hate Bournemouth is when we are playing them. I went to uni in Bournemouth and watched them loads back then(at least 20-30 times), still have my Bournemouth mug at work which comes out every now and then. Never thought they'd be in the same league as us.

But tomorrow they might as well be the red shite. I think we will beat them comfortably, we are playing well and they are on a bad run. Fully expect a win, I'll be disappointed with anything less. COYB!

Aha, point taken, but will they come for a point? Don't think they'll get one but I reckon they'll be after all three and may well succeed if he starts tinkering too much with them at the back. No pun int.

Like the players on the field, but it lacks width. I know the idea is that our CMs could slot into the back-line, allowing Baines and Coleman to get forward, but they are just not going to have the same level of freedom to get forward as they would if we played with 3 cbs.

Still might be worth giving it a go. Would like to all those players on the field at the same time.

Yeah I was doing the same yesterday, happy with almost all the set-ups, I reckon he'll rest Holgate or bench him and go with the 4 at the back, but again if he doesn't it will Holgate confidence knowing that one little bit of a stinker doesn't end his playing time.

I think it's been a case of Mirallas being so anonymous for most of the last 2 years that him having an ok run of form makes it look like he's done (really) well.

His position is definitely up for grabs both now and in the summer.

Really hoping Lookman starts.

Will give the lad a huge boost in confidence.

Bournemouth like to play so I cant see em sitting back. They will come at us should be a nice open contest. I think the solidity will be enough to deal with them and we have enough fire power at the other end.

Expect a lot of goals today so its gonna be a dull 1-1 isnt it met with loads of frustration.

Hoping for a massacre though. From us of course.

I'm not going to argue with that. You could probably suggest the majority of the team fit that mold for the most part.

He's performing more consistently this season and hasn't done anything lately to warrant moving to the bench, just yet anyway. Actually thought he was one of our better attacking players against Stoke up until he was subbed.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the signs Lookman has been showing as well, really exciting. I suppose there's only one man who makes the calls and if he thinks the time is right then so be it, no complaints, but I still think it would be tough on Mirallas right now.

I think it's been a case of Mirallas being so anonymous for most of the last 2 years that him having an ok run of form makes it look like he's done (really) well.

His position is definitely up for grabs both now and in the summer.

this is why I predicted him to score (assuming he starts)

I'm not going to argue with that. You could probably suggest the majority of the team fit that mold for the most part.

He's performing more consistently this season and hasn't done anything lately to warrant moving to the bench, just yet anyway. Actually thought he was one of our better attacking players against Stoke up until he was subbed.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the signs Lookman has been showing as well, really exciting. I suppose there's only one man who makes the calls and if he thinks the time is right then so be it, no complaints, but I still think it would be tough on Mirallas right now.

Am sorry but I completely disagree
I thought it was quite poor and didnt offer anything - seen that when LookMan

Never been a Mirallas fan but fair enough if he gets the shout ,the way he has played for a few games has looked like the message has gotten through and although I thought he was a bit anonymous against Stoke , no one plays to their best every game and he can be special when the other defence isn't on top form

Guess Barry, in place of Davies, would provide better back up for Lookman. When I say back up, I mean covering up behind him to allow Lookman to concentrate on attacking and lessen his defensive burden.
Title: Re: Everton V Bournemouth
Post by: Bluedylan on February 04, 2017, 08:04:50 PM
Nah, that's fair enough. One or two midfielders are going to be disappointed every week, and this week it's Davies. No problem with that. It makes sense to play the kids, and then take them out occasionally. Looking forward to seeing Lookman.

They've also got a lot of the big boys to play yet and the annual CL meltdown to come. It would be nice if we had a couple of clubs to aim for, and not just Utd.

Given that everyone is so confident, we're playing well, they're playing poorly and have never won at Goodison makes it a nailed on certainty that they'll win today, then maybe Koeman is just protecting Davies unbeaten record as a starter?

Bit of a weird line up. We shall see.

Interested to see what Lookman can do as a starter, but sad to see Davies not in as his engine (which works both attacking and defensively unlike McCarthy who adds little to us going forward) has been pivotal to our transformation in recent weeks.

Hull 0-0 Liverpool
Posted at 15:31

One word for this game - dull. It's been scrappy and light on chances. In fact there's only been one on target so far and that was for Hull. Liverpool are seeing plenty of the ball but run out of ideas when in the final third.

Has anyone worked out what Bournemouth are trying to do on the left? Mings is playing that left centre back position like a full back in a back four and Pugh is playing the wing back position like a typical winger.

Bizarre plan from Howe but it's worked well for us so far.

Very good first half from us. Some very good confident football and we've taken our chances very well. Lookman has done great for a player who had never played Premier League football until a few weeks ago, he really does slot right in.

Very pleased to see McCarthy do well especially offensively, Koeman must have really worked hard with him to transform him. Lukaku is holding on to the ball a lot better as well.

The main thing now is not to be complacent, since the 3rd goal we seem a little happier just to slow things down - can you believe that Bournemouth have already won 5 corners!

But it's great looking at our bench and seeing the likes of Gueye and Davies who we know can do a job in midfield plus if needed, Jagielka and Holgate could bolster the defence.

Great half from us. You can see the confidence flowing but we keep working hard.

I have to say, Schneiderlin looks a real step up. Great strength and fight but combined with good vision and technique.

Lukaku of course is incredible, can't say enough about his performance so far. Hoping he can get his hat trick.

High press has really delivered rewards, Lookman's energy and enthusiasm has them worried, but Rom seems to elevate his level when he has younger players to help out.

High press starts from the front, but it needs the base and support of a solid midfield and Schniederlin and McCarthy have been excellent.

Mess of a game.

Really Bournemouth just don't know when to say die. It's all fine and dandy when you actually have a chance at winning, but after we made it 5-2 with a few minutes to play it should have just ended. It was a right mess after that.

You have to give Bournemouth quite a bit of credit. They could have given up after our 3rd goal but they just kept on going and showed a lot of positivity and caused us a lot of problems. Granted they might have been very naive at times at the back but I wish some of the shithouse teams in the bottom half of the league would show a bit more courage like Eddie Howe's side.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but all 3 of their goals were from through balls through the middle. One was over the top. (Which Stoke gave us trouble with as well)

Fairness to Bournemouth they're playing for survival and credit to them for the 2nd half. They were always going to come out firing after being largely inept to begin with.

Even in the first we looked a bit shaky on the last line.

I never saw the game, but giving up three goals at home worries me, regardless of the final score.

Yeah, I think one of our main priorities in the summer will be to bring in a central defender.

Saying that, I think this game was more just one of those freakish contests. After we went 3-0 up, we seemed quite happy to step down one gear and even invited Bournemouth to have more of the ball while we would wait for counterattacking opportunities. Along with that, Bournemouth must have thought, "well, we might as well have a go, we know what it's like losing 4-0 or 5-0 in games but if we can score one then that would be a consolation". When their goal went in they just went into attacking overdrive and they were winning more battles in the centre of the pitch. We struggled to contain them and clear the ball but because they were very much committed to attacking and scoring, they were extremely suspect at the back and once we made the defensive subs we managed to gain more control of the game and score another 3. Also without Robles making a few key saves, Bournemouth would have likely gone 4-3 up.

I expect we'll concede more soft goals in the next few months but I don't expect us to concede 3 goals per game or even 2 goals per game on average between now and the end of the season.

What a game for a neutral but for me it was agony and ecstasy. Think Williams is great but slow and gets turned too easily. Robles saved us again 2 weeks running. Lookman faded badly and needs to be impact sub at moment when i thought he was ready before this game. Rom is a monster but we'll be fighting to keep him on this form.
Barkley played really well today and loved the arms raised before passing it into the net.. his assist was sublime too.
Barry needs to be a sub sad to say. Great result especially as the shite got beat and Niasse scored... great weekend all round but i bet Koeman is pissed with the defending second half. Just hope utd get beat tomoz.

Anyone else enjoying the BBC Merseyside phone in?

http://streema.com/radios/BBC_Merseyside

Latest depressed rs seems to be comparing Klopp to Martinez.  :snigger:

Good calls by bluenoses giving great credit to Robles; stabilizing force today.

Ha good to hear about Klopp and also agree about Joe Robles, who has come on leaps and bounds this year. That save at 3-2 today won us the game, fantastic. Love the way Joel is commanding his box and if he carries on with this form, then we will not need a keeper next year.

Barkley's celebration, was that a 1st for Prem?.... can't remember ever seeing anyone do that before... & great back heal....

You need to give our back up manager some credit for that 2nd half switch of tactics and finally give the boy a locker....

You know what? When ppl get a first impression it is hard to turn it around, espescially for a GK.

The next time Robles does a mistake everybody gonna talk about our GK problems. But what impressed me the most with Joel today was his reaction to the goals against and the chances Bournemouth created in that period.

He was fuming and shouted at the defenders...Thats the first time in a very long time I have seen an Everton-player show a moment of insane desire of winning, while things are going against us. Way to go Joel!

Showed Ross being boss as well.

They're always a bit slow to clock on. If we end up above United (unlikely) by hopefully beating Boro then we'll get a bit more from them.

You're not wrong. People tried to even blame him for the Stoke goal. Once it's been decided on a keeper they'll get some of the blame for most goals

And while they concentrate on an ever compacting top six, the team in seventh draw ever closer.
Under Martinez we'd have fallen apart at 3-2, it was never in doubt today though, we have that arrogance, of which Martinez often spoke of, back in abundance but with a work rate, tactical ability, flexibility and confidence that we've not seen in a very, very long time.
Defensively we look naive at times and we'll need one if not two new centre backs in the summer. The progress shown in players such as Lukaku, Barkley, and Robles is astounding though - coupled with the emergence of players such as Davies, Holgate and Lookman and Koeman has me well and truly on side.

It's the nature of the programme really. They need to tell a story in two minutes, and nothing but the simplest of narratives fit into so little time. If this was MNF, they'd analyse the shit out of it. :)

What a bizaare game to witness. Comfortably cruising at 3-0. Second half we were a different team. No pressing or closing down. Credit to Bournemouth for changing it tactically. Shouldn't allowed that cross to come in for their second and third went out of play.
A sign of a good manager spotting the danger and changing it to 3 at the back.

It sure did! We had a great time. The game had everything plenty of action to keep a 7 year old entertained. Seats in the family enclosure were top notch, so close to the action. Thankfully the blue and white clapper thing broke before the game even started! ;-) Think they should fly us over every week for luck!  :woohoo:
