Howard
Neville Yobo Senderos Baines
Donovan Osman Arteta Pienaar
Yak Saha

I think that we should win this, although we're gonna be short on defenders without Heitinga or Distin.  Does anyone know when Hibbert is coming back? I thought he was only supposed to be out two weeks?

Donovan Osman Arteta Peinaar
Cahill (Bilya if Injured)
Saha

I think Moyes will have been working Senderos and Yobo together in training since the United game, I hope that's enough time to mould their partnership... long shot ey!!

I also have a feeling the Rodwell and Gosling may be in for a shout of a starting place, but I don't see where I'd fit them in. I'm not hinting that they should be starting because they both scored on Saturday, I'm just trying to figure out what Moyes will be thinking.

If anything, it could be Bilya who makes way for Rodwell. But personally I'd play the Russian from the start.

By the way, I think Osman is in fine form in his favoured position.

No Mikel? I think he's so vital to us in Europe and definitely worth a start.

I think the team pretty much picks itself, the only question is what to do with Bilya, Donovan and Pienaar. All can play on both wings and behind Saha so it'll be interesting to see who he puts where. I think it was Pienaar mainly who had the duty of supporting Saha, with Arteta and Osman also alternating late runs.

Going to be tighter and more nervous than we think, despite our fine win on Saturday.
Sporting never give up, and have the horrible knack of getting a result in injury time.

Despite all this, we should be going through.
An away goal will do wonders.

No, no Mikel.  I think its been too much too soon for him lately, and I believe we can do it without him starting.  Ideal game for Victor IMO.

Victor's a good option in Europe, aye, but mainly off the bench I think.

I think Mikel's a must in this game to be honest, even if it's just for 60 minutes or so, he brings so much composure to the side. Nothing eye catching at the moment, but his understanding of the game his key.

I wouldn't be keen on going to Lisbon with a four man midfield, they'll pass around us and make us chase shadows all game. They have five technically gifted midfielders who pass and move, we'll have to match them in this area. Hopefully our workrate and superiour fire power will shine through.

They drew 0-0 at Olhense on Sat, Moutinho didn't play but I don't know whether that was down to injury or giving him a rest.

The team should be the same as Utd except with Yobo in for Distin and Senderos for Heitinga.

We might well start with Donovan off Saha as that worked well when it was shuffled around in the 2nd half. His pace and willingness to run the hard yards could be key to our ball retention.
Title: Re: Sporting vs Everton
Post by: .Rimbo. on February 22, 2010, 08:53:52 PM
The more I think about it, the more I think he may start with Yakubu. He played really well when he came on in the home tie, it'd give the in-form Saha a rest and he'd knacker their defence down. Then, if we need a goal, Saha/Anichebe could come on against a tired back four. I remember Victor accrediting his game-changing performance in Nurnburg to Yakubu, who worked tirelessly for 75 minutes to wear them down.

The only reason I think he may not do that is because Saha is bang in-form, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But Saha has played an awful lot of games this season, and we'll need him fresh for the game at the Lane. I'll stick with my original team, however, but I think Yakubu could be a possibility.

Me too, mate. But we always seem more willing to "play it on the carpet" in Europe, so I think we'll see expansive play. Hopefully Donovan, Pienaar and Osman can make the late runs from midfield like they were against United because they just couldn't live with us, and they're a far better side than Lisbon.

I'm very, very confident.

Title: Re: Sporting vs Everton
Post by: ToxtethBlue on February 22, 2010, 10:11:33 PM
I wouldn't be against it but I think Moyes will go for the more mobile, direct Louis Saha. We need someone who's going to occupy the whole of Sporting's back four and I don't think a unfit Yakubu will do that. Saha's aerial ability will be needed aswell, we don't have a big team as it is at the moment so at both ends of the pitch, he'll be useful.

In that case why not start with Vaughan? He'd be a handful for the SL back four to say the least...

As ever, the Football Supporters’ Federation has produced a guide for travelling Blues in Europe. With Everton holding a slender 2-1 lead, this week’s tie in the Portuguese capital is key for you lot. We’ve got the low-down on the city of Lisbon, as well as the stadium, for all those who are travelling (or those who might just be curious). We know some of you will have been there for the Benfica game, but anyway, every little helps.

For all the info you could want, just pop along to:

I don't think it'll be an easy night, but I reckon we'll scrape through.

Even though we have a lead to defend, it would be good to nick an early goal. That would make them open up even more, then we might nick another.

Ever hopeful  :)

I think thats an excellent spot. I bet you're right.

With all these news items on the OS, its clear they are paving the way for it to be ok for Jags to start...

http://www.evertonfc.com/news/archive/jags-ready-for-lions-test.html (http://www.evertonfc.com/news/archive/jags-ready-for-lions-test.html)

Neville himself missed a large chunk of this campaign with a knee injury but made his comeback in a Premier League clash with Burnley, while Mikel Arteta was also thrust straight back into competitive first-team football on his recent return from an almost identical problem to Jagielka's.

"Sometimes it's the best to be thrown back in," said Neville. "Sometimes you can play three or four reserve games and it still doesn't prepare you for that big European night or the Premier League.

"He'll be nervous but the adrenaline will get him through. He's an old-fashioned type English player and he has played with knocks and bruises, he knows his game and I'm sure he'll have no problem at all."

I want to see him back as much as the next guy but I can wait a couple more weeks if need be. Its a big gamble for such an important game.
Title: Re: Sporting vs Everton
Post by: blargins on February 25, 2010, 06:31:32 AM
Senderos has been given the nod over Jags and rightly so.

I'd rather risk another teams player than our own, especially after the injury Jags has been out with.

Perhaps bring him on if things are going well, but I wouldn't want to throw him right back in at the deep end, especially in such a key area.

Jags is so manly that this has been known to occur to already pregnant women. The mini-Jags then goes on to out-muscle the existing fetus, until the 9 months are up, and then the mini-Jags will emerge victorious.

Did we have a shot?  Did we have a corner even?

All I remember is a cross that was far too long, a cross where Donovon was offside and fluffed it when the ball got to him, and a freekick where Senderos was off side.

For the love of God can we stop hoofing the ball, try playing football, it worked against ManU and Chelsea.

Title: Re: Sporting vs Everton
Post by: toffee_scot on February 26, 2010, 03:03:08 AM
Thank goodness it is half time.

One of the problems we have is the fact that we have a different central defence and they have only played something like 4 games between them in the last month or so. Both of them have been quite poor so I find it incredible Sporting haven't scored yet.

This may sound strange but I was kind of hoping at one point Moutinho would score from that free kick, lately we've done well in games where we have been a goal down so I thought a Sporting goal would give our team the kick up the backside we deserve.

So far I think Tim Howard has been our best player easily. The others are giving the ball away or are just far too slow. I just hope the players realise that if we score it would significantly decrease Sporting's chances of winning the tie.

I take your point, but they've done little more than make up the numbers in the CL for a long time. That they usually/sometimes qualify is testament as to how poor the Portuguese League is. Porto have had it their own way for an age, and apart from Benfica, I struggle to think of another side that ever will qualify from there.

Whoever they are, and whatever their history, we have been piss poor. It's particularly disapppointing when you consider the recent performances we've had against real CL sides.

As you say though, it's 0-0 (somehow), and we live in hope.

Calm Calm down. Yes its disappointing to loose butit was always going to be an uphill struggle from the 1st leg after their away goal. I don't believe we have a team/squad equipped for the latter stages of Europe. Same thing happened two years ago against Fiorentina. You always need that extra bit of quality to go through the later rounds.

Still chin up, we beat Chelsea and Man.Utd. Hopefully 3 more points againts spurs on sunday. COYB!!!

I honestly don't see the point in us competing in Europe anymore, as we just aren't good enough (mentally). We get no money from the EL, and it stretches our small squad even further. It's a poison challice, filled with fucking rohypnol...

I'm serious though Gash, mate. What's the point in giving it 100% in one European game and 0% in the next? You need to give it your best for the whole of the competition, and anything but a trophy from the EL is a loss for the club. There's no money and too many games.

Because in the league you play 38 games. If you lose one week, you can try harder the next. In Europe if you lose, you drop out.

I think the Europa League proved to be too much of a burden particularly at the start of the season, however the team we had on paper tonight should have got something out of the game but apart from the first 2 minutes and Pienaar's attempt, we didn't deserve to get anything at all.

What's the point in giving it 100% in one European game and 0% in the next? You could say the same in the league. Why bother at all?

At this point if we don't at least get 6th, I'll say it was a failing season. And, barring more nasty injuries, next season I'll expect a lot more from our squad.

Right, on a more positive note. We now have only the PL to worry about and we can go all out to ensure we get European football again next season.

With Heitinga available for next seasons European campaign we'll have enough heart to win every game!

Looking back at the game and looking at individual performances I would honestly say that Yobo & Senderos as a back 4 pair should never ever happen again.

The fact that they played so deep because of their lack of pace was key factor in their possession in and around the box and the midfield was awful.

Osman was man marking Moutinho (who was man of the match) and was completely out of the game.

Bily... I dunno, I think he's too hit and miss this season, I'd give him another season, he may do a Pienaar and improve.

However his chances maybe scuppered with the World Cup (If he gets picked).

But, he is a young manager and still learning

I am not sure this is valid comment anymore, Moyes has been a manager for well over 10 years, 7 year in EPL and 4 European campaigns. For sure he will in the eyes of me and others make mistakes, as will even the very best.

We played really well in one attack last night.....LOL

But one shot on target and 2 corners (?) is pathetic, as was our passing and ball retention.

ho hum.
