General Football Chat / Re: Newcastle takeover?
« Last post by Cereal Killer on 25 seconds ago »
Sadly I have to start wanting Newcastle to do well because my 6 year old has just been invited to join their Advanced Academy.  He already plays in an under 7s league and is the best player on the pitch, so hoping one day he'll be tearing it up for the Toon and England.

Will of course encourage him to run down his contract and sign for us though, can't be having a successful footballer for a son and him not represent the toffees!

More chance of game time when they’re in League One  ;)

Clubs don't come more ruthless than Chelsea and they gave Lampard a go.

Always remember when he was sacked I had a dream that night that he was in the pub at the bar and I bought him a pint and said sorry he'd been sacked.  He started crying but said it was ok.

Weird but I guess that shows he came across as a very likeable character, as most managers since if I dreamt about them it would probably involve me dishing out some sweary insults rather than buying them a drink.

Do you include Zidane in that?  I only ask because obviously his record as a manager is very strong but there is definitely a sense that his achievements somehow don't count (that might not be you). It's strange because he was a wonderful player and I don't think anyone in particular had any beef with him. I also think that if he had never played for Real Madrid then opinions of him would have been different - let's say he played out his career at Juventus for example.

Marco Materazzi had a beef with his sister lolol

I think the jury is still out on Zidane. His record at Madrid is amazing but I'm not convinced he's an elite manager or would be hugely successful elsewhere

Madrid and barca won loads under previously unproven managers but ultimately that period has seen them give up their financial and footballing advantage. They are too big to fail but its left them in a much worse place than they should be.

What a team that was.

Was in the main stand and this was probably the best I ever saw us play... we were just untouchable

There's a weird thing going on with some elite clubs thinking they don't need even a good manager never mind an elite 1. Barca haven't hired a proven world class manager for what must be over a decade. Madrid similar. Utd with OGS. Its utterly baffling.

Most other industries don’t have the emotional side of football though

I know what you mean and it’s a fine balance, but too much cold blooded analysis leads to “customers” etc

Yeah it's a balance. Surely it's possible to have warm, emotional PR and cold hard decision making underpinning it?
