Despite winning their last game at Selhust Park, Palace have a worse home record than we do.

We have the eighth best away form in the league.

Gonna be a draw innit.

After that Sunderland loss we only need a total of 6 points combined from us winning and them dropping points to secure safety.

I think we'll be alright, as they've got some tough games left and should drop 6 points.

Thing is while the away points total is good (6th) we've won 5/15, so we're twice as likely to not win!

Although we do tend to be ok against teams that really struggle so we should be in with more than a shout.

I have a ticket for this match, says a lot that they are still on general sale two days before, really wondering if I can be bothered trapping accross London on a Wednesday night if we are to be served up more of the same as Watford, will probably go along to measure the mood, a win would be a slight bonus but not really of any significance is it.

This doesn't make much sense to me. A "winning run" doesn't mean anything to this Everton team. If anything, we're more likely to win a game if we've lost/drawn several immediately prior to it.

Every time the pressure really mounts on this guy he pulls out a result or two to keep himself in a job. I expect much the same again, so a win coming Wednesday just to prolong the agony of this guy remaining in charge!

Christiffa he's never been close to being sacked and therefore never needing to "pull out a result" to keep himself in a job. You're living in a fantasy world if you think Martinez has been close to getting the sack.

Well true, I imagine no he's never been on the cusp of the sack but what I meant is, when the media etc are starting to turn and question him more he gets a couple of results, moves us up to mid table where sky seem to think we belong and concentrate on how the likes of west ham etc shouldn't be bottom half.

Well If we lose against Palace, the atmosphere at Goodison will be horrible and it would probably cost us against a very good Soton team. Then its the derby at Anfield so no way we are winning there. That is my reasoning.

I remember I used to love it when we had a lot of games in a short period of time. Loads of Everton to look forward to, great stuff.

Now it just feels like a fresh ordeal every 3/4 days.

I think part of the problem is that, ignoring the performances individually, that we've seen RM make tweaks to his approach for short periods that produce good results.

Things look like they're on the up for a short while then he reverts back to his standard approach and results tail off.

Therefore I've lost any enthusiasm for seeing an uplift in results and correlating that with a change of approach which will yield better results in the long term.

So if we play tighter in the next two games and get solid 1-0 wins, I can't see how anyone could then think that he's learned, as we've seen it all before.

That's bound to dim enthusiasm as wins normally lift everyone's spirits with promise of better things to come, if only we can replicate x/y/z.

That's not the case here (for me at least).

Like said above  we all know a 2-2 3-2 3-3  will be around the corner sooner rather than later , even if we pulled off 2 clean sheets, even that 8 game winning run back in his first season was never without luck...........

the philosophy of we will score one more than you never works, great for the neutral , and some games we did look like we could score when ever we attacked, how ever once we stop creating chances,(confidence, lack of form etc) we are always going to create chances for the opposition,
but would rather have Leicester past 1-0 results any day

back to the game, palace have us sussed , predicting another defeat

I think people have a false view of how good Palace are

The win at the weekend was their first since the late 90's or something like that

The Pardew pattern of starting on fire and then turning utterly shit is in the utterly shit phase and will turn into the fans hounding him out of the club phase (almost where we are at now?!) any minute!

We should be good for a 0-0 draw is what I'm saying!

Palace are shite. But then Watford had lost 4 on the bounce til the other day. And we're without the only one of our defenders who's played relatively well this season (Baines gets a pass cos of injuries).

We played Palace a couple of seasons ago at a similar time when we'd won 7 on the bounce and qualification for the CL was in our own hands. Look at the fucking state of us now, trying to avoid going 15th in the table.

I lied. Only one of them is fit. I naivety assumed they were both fit probably because they are the only women in the pub and I got a little bit excited.

They are kitted out in Palace gear, but have full on Aussie accents - weird. The only possible explanation I can give is that they know Mile Jedinak.

What confuses me is Kone hasnt been used for months, off the bench even then gets a random start. Why not use him when losing to united, or on saturday if was that close to starting??

He seems to use people non stop. then banish them for a while then bring them back randomly.

I only realised today that we were playing. Complete apathy. The problem isn't even that we are shit it's that we are without hope. Martinez is our Gallas (unintentionally) only he's actually doing it. It's not like he's being out thought and beaten by other managers. It's like he's on their side. Our set ups are a negative on our play.
Not sure I can even be arsed to watch. Very confident I don't care.

This is not accurate either. He does not live on his goals alone. His all-around play is very inconsistent, but sometimes his hold up play is excellent and he consistently picks up more assists than a lot of other strikers.

Kone has been bad
Barkley poor
Lukaku poor
Lennon no threat

I don't think that Martinez actually realizes how you involve fullbacks in the attack effectively. He seemingly thinks that if you don't play a midfielder out wide, then it creates space for the fullback to move into. But all it actually does is make it so that the fullback can be easily marked by one player, and is left increasingly isolated with no one to connect passes with. You actually want to have someone out wide that can then draw the defenders in when they move inside, like Peinaar used to -- that movement creates the space for the fullback to move into on the overlap and makes the defense make tough choices about who to defend.

I think it speaks to how far things have regressed that people think we're playing quite well. We're playing a team in freefall that you'd fancy a pub team would give them a game.

That's the problem with getting worse in general.

Spend most of the season in the bottom half, finishing 10th seems decent.

Spend most of the season in the top 6/7, 10th is disappointing.

The same goes with individual performances.

Have a few games where you have 0/1 chances then a bit of joined up play looks ok.

Full backs looking more involved than they have in previous games.

At times, but they are not really penetrating into the box. Baines was at his most effective in the past when he was able to connect more intricately with Peinaar and get in behind the defense and into the box itself. He has gotten way more assists in the past by getting to the byline and cutting it back than pinging it in from the wing like David Beckham. And our current setup does not really provide for the more positive outcome. The involvement is ultimately superficial.

There's a lot of captain hindsight stuff on here right now.  I think Martinez should be sacked, but you can't blame him for the sending off at all.  How many times has McCarthy got a booking and then not got another?  Loads.

Last time I will defend myself on this since I realize I am irritating most of you.

It was not just the fact McCarthy was on a yellow. It was also that he was going in recklessly on multiple occasions even after he picked up the yellow, and that he picked up fouls or was very close to doing so on several occasions. It just seemed like a high probability based off of the flow of the game, how early McCarthy received the yellow (which provides more time to build up a persistent foul collection), and McCarthy's role in the match thus far.

And it is not really hindsight where I posted before the second half started that I would bring on Besic for McCarthy because it looked like McCarthy was at risk for getting sent off.

Mirallas was behaving in similar fashion before his first half sendoff.  You have to be able to read that as a manager, and err on the side of pulling players off, especially when healthy, roughly equal ability replacements are available.

Decent second half performance. Promising from Robles and Stones.

Funes Mori is odd. He is both our best player in the air and a huge liability on defense when he does not really challenge attackers. It might be because he has a really powerful leap, but can be a bit off on his timing at times?

Let's look at the positives:

1. Robles is getting more and more confident by the game. Man of the match for the second game in a row for me.
2. We actually tried to defend when we had to. We weren't very good at it, and that's an understatement, but we tried to do the right things.
3. Stones had a quiet game.
4. Lennon and Baines seem to be able to work together a little bit. Not a full Pienaar partnership, but a step in the right direction.
5. Coleman had a good game going forward.

Against two teams that are below us as well!

It's obviously better than losing like.

But we need to remember that these players should always be able to produce the odd bit of decent play.

Are people really expecting us to be completely pathetic and therefore when it's sort of ok, this then gets classed as a decent performance, regardless of who it is against?

I can only assume we either arent fit enough to do it. Or he doesnt want the likes of Barkley and Lukaku doing it as he wants them to conserve energy for when they get the ball, and rather have mccarthy or barry win it back and release the forward players. Or he is asking them to do it and Barkley/Lukaku etc dont have the desire to do it and carry out his instructions.

Cant think of any other reason why do it so infrequently. I saw a graph the other week and we are down the bottom with newcastle and sunderland for least amount of pressing per game in the league. If they arent fit enough it thats ridiculous, if its because he wants to conserve energy i understand the idea but as shown by the top teams around at the moment they all press and dont leave individuals out of it. you can't underestimate the confidence a clean sheet will give defenders (no matter how gash the opposition were in front of goal)

You could probably paint the last 2 performances as being decent if they formed part of a season that was good in general.  If we were mostly winning games but had the odd lethargic away performance against a poor side then you'd take that.

But the fact is that the last 2 performances represent a genuine improvement over a lot of what we've seen of late, yet taken on their own merits were poor performances.  It really is a symptom of how bad we've been that anyone can take much in the way of positives out of them.

The 'conserving energy' argument holds no water whatsoever. Kane works his nuts off every game and still bags 20 a season. Vardy similarly. So does Eriksen, Alli....

Football has moved on, being at the peak of your physical fitness for 90 minutes is where it's at now. Not just using your athleticism in short bursts.

I do think that there is an argument that Lukaku, given his body build, is probably not going to be able to press like some of the other players you mentioned all game long (though I am sure he can do more than he is currently). That might mean, however, that he is not the sort of striker you need in the modern game.

I agree. However I do think some people are naturally more able to do it consistently for longer periods whereas others are built for longer bursts but fewer of them. Someone like Toure can run quickly for 60 yards but then thats him done for a bit. Whereas Vardy, Suarez can do short bursts most of the game.

I definitely dont think Lukaku or Barkley are near being at peak fitness though, which is baffling.

But that said, for a largely static team off the ball, we get pulled apart like BBQ pork, and teams seem to be able to find space in the 10 position between the lines like nobody's business...so I have no idea what the fuck we would look like trying to close down.

Then again, the first 10 after McCarthy went off we closed down like animals and they were all over the shop so once again, like so often this season - I don't know what to think!

The thing is for me is that the 3 losses wasn't the rot that needed stopping; they were against teams in the top 6.

It's that stat of 17 points from 19 games that's the real issue.

(Actually just looked it's 20 points from last 19 games.)

As that covers all the table.

So we're not pulling out of a short, say 6 game slump, where any sort of positive results are what's needed.

This is long term poor form.

2 draws against teams that are worse than us isn't something we should remotely be clinging on to.

Lukaku is heavier than Kane though and a bit taller. His body might not be able to cope with doing that as well as Kane so it does make a difference. It's like my fitness level is different as a front rower to a back rower. Both got to last a game, but if I'm expected to run around too much from ruck to ruck and maul to maul my effectiveness in the s rum is gone.

I do think that there is an argument that Lukaku, given his body build, is probably not going to be able to press like some of the other players you mentioned all game long (though I am sure he can do more than he is currently). That might mean, however, that he is not the sort of striker you need in the modern game.
He needs someone up with him to do the running.  Having him and Ross just doesn't give us enough legs.

Does Ross look more labored this season than in the past? I feel like he just looks bigger and less quick across the ground on a regular basis.

Lukaku, great as he has been, is not playing at the peak of his physical fitness. Barkley neither. Both full of muscle but both playing within their athletic capabilities. I'd love to see what they could be like under Tottenham's fitness coach for example. In fact all our squad.

he suffers quite badly (or did as a teenager) from asthma so I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

Look at the Chelsea game.

If the opposition has less time to lift their heads and spot clear passes/runs we're much less likely to be carved open.

Most of the rest of the time the opposition can have a survey drawn up of the pitch and our players' positioning so it's no wonder that we can be pulled apart.

I don't think anyone has said it's good form or tried to defend it

I do think some people are imagining that some others have done that though, and then conjured up a fume because of it

We didn't lose.  Life is always a little bit better when Everton don't lose.  Not as good as when we win, but better than when we lose.  The form we're in at the moment, then a clean sheet is an improvement (obviously) although some will claim it's as bad as getting beat, which it isn't.

To be honest though, after the text the wife sent me this afternoon, even if we'd lost I was going to bed with a smile on my face.

Not sure if scared is the right word, Jim. I'm sure he is still feeling the effects of the injury he picked up against Watford. Saw him hold his lower back on a couple of occasions so could just be that. He seemed confident enough to drive forward and crack the bar with that effort.

We played okay overall I thought. A tad better than recent weeks but defensively we still look suspect. Part of that was down to McCarthy being a pleb and getting sent off (you could see it was going to happen the moment he got the first yellow) but I still worry everytime the other side attacks.

40 points though eh, lads. Phenomenal.

Yeah I totally agree and I'm not sure I should I meant to quote you!!!!

It's not good, at all
Can you see us beating man u? I can't

Surely that will be the end

It's sad that a draw at palace can be seen as a small, very small improvement but that's what he has brought to us

I will say fair play today, he mixed it up. We played no right midfielder instead of no left mid

That would have thrown em

Yeah scared isn't prob the right word but he can do things, drive us on, take us forward but in the first half in particular he tried the easy option and what was more annoying was he failed at the easy option

And if it's the final one then it's poor management to let them get away with it.

Whatever it is, not really good enough!

Aye, that and having the second worst home record besides Aston fucking Villa should do it too.

Only at that point did I think that we let them in and gave them the chances! Though they also threw on Adebayor and had Wickham too so they just lumped it up to them!
The referee though did he even give us 1 free kick all night?

McCarthy deserved to be sent off. Although, I don't blame him. Very little he could do to get out the way for the second yellow.

As for we did ok?? If we had been playing against Spurs or Leicester, Utd etc, the yes I would say we did well to battle for a point. Especially down to 10 men.

However, the fact we were playing a REALLY crap palace team, who imo villa are the only team I think have looked worse against us this season. Kind of wipes out the we did ok talk.

So often this season a draw has felt like two points lost, this felt more like a point won, no discontent from the crowd in the away section, frustration of course mostly at the ref performance who didn't give us a single free kick all night and in my opinion on any other night we would have been given a pen for that challenge on Coleman. The Mcarthy second yellow was "harsh"  not saying it wasn't a yellow but more often than not a ref would let that pass on a player already on a yellow. Thought Stones and Funes Mori played well, need that partnership to tighten up even further for the next few games though.

Baines looked knackered after 10 minutes, had no pace at all. Lukaku didn't win a single aerial challenge all night and looked incapable of using his body weight when in possession, something not quite right here, at one point in time he came over to the away fans and gestured with his arms for more support, best response was "you make a fuckin effort too Rom ! "

Looks like Ross has been told not to shoot from any distance, on at least 5 occasions he had an opportunity to shoot from 15-20 yards but ended up being dispossessed, on the one occasion that he took a shot from 20 yards he hit the crossbar, that and the pen that should have been given could quite easily
put a better spin on this with 10 men. Couple of positives their, Robles pulled off a very decent save, Barry playing well, think if we had put Lennon or Gerry  on the right wing we could have got more out of this game.

He was forever screaming for a pass but would have to say that on 50% of those occasions he was not in a good position to receive it but then had a moan when it didn't come in, his head definately gone a bit.
Saw Martinez holding on to Baines arm on the sideline whilst Ball in play and Baines trying to keep his eyes on play whilst Martinez giving some kind of instructions in about the 70th minute, Baines eventually saw danger and pulled his arm away to get back into play whilst Martinez just spun on his heels, didn't see Baines pass on any master tactics to anyone else.
