Crystal Palace

Palace are a nice club but they'll also be relegated this season as they sold Wan Bissaka for £50m and have replaced him with absolutely nobody. They've signed twice relegated Jordan Ayew after scoring one goal on loan for them last season, which tells you how bad Benteke must be these days. Wilfried Zaha is the main man and has shown his commitment to the club by letting his brother talk about him leave all window, liking every Everton related MySpace post and posting a video of himself scoring freekicks whilst wearing an Eric Bailly Man United shirt. No, honestly, Eric Bailly.

Roy Hodgson has surprisingly done well at Palace which may be unsurprising considering the success he had with Fulham all those years ago but he probably should have retired after being the worst England manager since the one before him. He's got a pretty bad record against us and even managed to lead a Liverpool side to defeat against us back in 2010. He hasn't beaten Everton since 2011 (D2, L6) and we've been pretty shocking in the last few years. I don't rate Roy Hodgson.

Possible Line-Ups

Everton

The season is back, we've had a miserable pre-season and in 26 attempts since the Premier League commenced, Everton have failed to win an opening day fixture on no fewer than 19 occasions. The last opening day victory coming against Mark Hughes' Stoke in a 1-0 victory under Ronald Koeman at Goodison Park.  Hughes was pleased following the match because "Everton have spent a lot of money and there wasn't a lot of difference between the sides", unfortunately he was correct and then sacked as Stoke went on to be relegated. To make matters worse, Everton played Crystal Palace on the opening day of the season in 1997 and lost 2-1 at home meaning we're absolutely winning this match.

Zaha is a good player but so is Richarlison whilst they are both better than Yannick Bolasie. Honestly, Squawka need to get their stats back up if I'm to continue doing these because attempting to be funny is clearly not happening.

Thanks!

We're going to win 2-0 with Richarlison at the double.

I'll take a 1-0 win all day in this one. Their attack looks capable though, we may need to score twice.

It'll be interesting to see how much change to that lineup there is after this week.

Yeah they probably will start wont they. Itd be wise to introduce the new lads slowly. Schneiderlin and DCL served the system well in the last stretch of the season.

Handy to have Kean and Iwobi there if we need something.

Found this on a Palace forum:

"This post has been merged from a topic called 'How to win your opening game (playing wingers)' by bexleydave

1) Buy a winger (Lookman) from Charlton for £7.5m
2) sell the winger 2 years later for £22.5m
3) Target a new winger (Iwobi)
4) pretend interest in the winger Zaha
5) Put a modest offer in for Zaha to unsettle him
6) Pull out and buy your original target for £34m (whose scored 3 times as many goals as the winger you've sold)
7) play your first game against opposition without their talisman"

A pessimistic bunch mostly predicting a home defeat.

Think its a bit hard to make that correlation, we haven't done much of anything this half with or without DCL up there. Everyone is just playing a bit poo, sloppy passes all over the place.

So, clearly a work in progress. Away game, a man down a point isn't terrible but some issues with the performance for sure.

I don't think it's unfair to say we were a tad unlucky too. Sigurdsson had that great chance, and the other cleared off the line. We had other good opportunities too, albeit some fortunate how they came to us. The red card was I thought more than a little soft.

At the back, glad to see we got the clean sheet. Still gave away silly one on one though just like last season. That was mostly from sloppiness though from the midfield.

Pickford showed quality when called upon. One of the positives.

Not bad. Very difficult conditions, and an awkward team to play in those conditions. Defended very well, apart from a little 10 minute period in the 2nd half, but then defended superbly after that again.

Thought the first one was soft too. Don't really see the problem with banging the ground in frustration, not like he told the ref to fuck off or anything, shit rule in my opinion and you've seen players not getting booked for it. Moss acting like a headmaster.

Our two build-up ideas are work something between the wingers and full backs or smash a hopeful ball at the CF w/ most penalty area entries coming through crosses.

Basically like Moyes-ball but with more skilled players.

Iwobi can't come into the team soon enough, preferably in a central role.

I'd like to see Iwobi in there, see if that works. See if he can play the ball into Kean, Richarlison, etc. Although, there isn't much more of an etc come to think of it when it comes to scoring.

Our lack of goal threat is a problem though and taking out a goalscorer is still something of a risk.

Iwobi should solve either the issues with Sig (getting on the ball); or Bernard (when heís bad heís too weak to force his way through the game).

They were our creative players today and both were awful.

Palace are a poor side, bottom three home form last season, missed opportunity here. Start phasing out Sigurdsson, offers little away from home.

Our two build-up ideas are work something between the wingers and full backs or smash a hopeful ball at the CF w/ most penalty area entries coming through crosses.

Basically like Moyes-ball but with more skilled players.

Iwobi can't come into the team soon enough, preferably in a central role.

I agree.

He wonít, though.

Silva has already said that he sees Iwobi coming in from the left.

And heís only properly dropped Sigurdsson once iirc, away to Brighton, where he played 3 at the back (against a lone Glenn Murray) so surrendered numerical advantage in the midfield anyway, but then he brought him on in the 2nd half and let him/instructed him to swan about on the edge of the box, as usual.

Thought the first one was soft too. Don't really see the problem with banging the ground in frustration, not like he told the ref to fuck off or anything, shit rule in my opinion and you've seen players not getting booked for it. Moss acting like a headmaster.

Everyone around him will become a better player with him out the team.

I'm convinced Sigurdsson is holding this team back.

How many times did we see him drop into a bit of space and pick a pass? And he's supposed to be a creative force in the team.

Without Sigurdsson we still donít have a player who can pass the ball. Get a 4-3-3 going and youíre either reliant on the 3 prong attack doing all the work, which our 3 arenít good/ productive enough to do, or some creativity from CM to start passing moves and break teams down. Most of the time we struggle to put two, three passes together.

I get what people are saying about Sigurdsson, and totally agree, but just by taking him out wonít turn this team into a fluid attacking machine. Itíll just take 13 goals and a handful of assists out the side.

Davies and Gomes are both capable of progressive passes if we go 4-3-3 with Gbamin/Schniederlin being the holding player.

Either that, or if heís going to stick with this lineup then switch Sig and Bernard.

Sig is more than capable of contributing goals from the left, and Bernard will at least get involved as the 10

I thought we played pretty well, and had enough clear cut chances to be ahead. The sending off changed the dynamic, and then we had to play more cautiously, but we dealt with their physicality and dribbling well. Loads of positives defensively. I wouldn't have a massive midfield post mortem just yet. It was a tough game in really tough conditions.

Yeah that wind was legit -- probably the most intense I've seen since Howard scored against Bolton -- and, in turn, it was always going to be difficult to launch successful attacks.

I'm heartened by Pickford's and Mina's displays.  It was important that they get confidence early -- and I think they will both take some from today.

A little concerned with Gbamin's performance, but there were some positives and its early days yet.  He needs to be given some time to get up to speed with the pace of the Prem, which he will next week with Gomes, Delph, and Schniederlin out.  (Though, it must be said, I've really never seen more obvious examples of the speed of the Prem catching a player off guard in his first appearance....)

I said last season we are so predictable,, all we ever do is play down the wings,, which worked in the first half then come the 2nd theyd sussed us out and there was less chances for us,, which also has the knock on effect of siigs looking like he does fuck all because his in the middle and the balls mostly out wide,,,as soon as we have the ball in the middle the players know its going out wide and theres no movement through the middle and out it goes... we seriously need to learn to play through the middle more otherwise we are just gonna get shut down all the time against better sides
As for the dcl is shit shouts the boy had 2 chances 1 wide with a header and the other header where he per kroldruped it,, was it a shot or was he laying it off? if he was missing chances left right and centre than id understand but he hasnt exactly been having chances gifted on a plate is he.... think he might have had a shot from outside the area straight at the keeper aswell...i thought we did enough in the first half with 6 chances but only 4 in the second shame we didnt win but we didnt lose either so onwards and upwards
probably shouldve put davies on for gomez and kean on for siggs

To be fair, I usually hate how critical we can be as fans, but we need to raise the bar if we are to be anything near to successful again. We spend a lot each year now and the players are paid a fortune, so I hope Silva get stuck into the players for not being able to score against one of the leagues poorest teams.

There's definitely an agenda with Sigurdsson.  If he had had a good game today then nothing would have been said.  But he had a bad game today so peope just lay into him.  Actually our other forwards were poor too (in my opinion).  And Sigurdsson was probably the best chance we had of winning the game today.  So there is a dishonesty when fans load in on him - they're waiting for an opportunity. And I would re-emphasize - this was the first game of the season.

But for those who want to broaden the picture and claim he doesn't fit the supposed system that Silva wants to play, they are sometimes the same people saying to play Iwobi or Bernard in the 10 role.  There's no reason for it other than that some fans just don't like Sigurdsson.  They are entitled to that opinion, but to react in the way some fans have today is stupid but not unexpected unfortunately.

I think a lot of peopleís opinions on sigurdsson are the same on his good days and on his bad. They probably just donít think itís the time to mention it when heís scored a couple (even if more often than not heís still not been in the game enough)
The thing is heís not got the stats of a midfielder, doesnít score enough hold it up or run in behind like a striker. He doesnít fit into the modern game. So either he plays for a lesser side who doesnít control games and need his 10 goals or heís a sub at a decent side. I donít dislike him. I just donít know what position he can play in a successful Everton team

Yes I think I agree with some of that. He seems to be the player and role that seems to give on our position as club moving from also trans to a team genuinely challenging and wanting to move up. You can't really expect Silva to drop him though. By the way I wouldn't be adverse to selling him in the next year. It's odd that we seen to be planning by getting other players in his role rather than moving to a 4-3-3

It has me in stitches.

One thing that Iíve noticed the most - all of you demand perfection all the time, from all of the players and every game.

We are years away from that coming true, but are finally going in the right direction.

I just canít see where the goals are going to come from this season, I think we are all relaying on Kean getting up to speed quick smart. My biggest disappointment today was Bernardís reluctance to pull the trigger on a couple of occasions when opportunityís presented themselves, he always seems to want to play one pass to many or throw in an extra trick where itís not warranted. A point away isnít the worst result but I canít help but think it should have been 3.

A point away without conceding can't be bad and we did control the game at times, my only beef is we looked under cooked and unprepared, the final third play looked like we have not played together before but the 4 up top played most of last season together so I can only point my ire towards preseason and being ill prepared for the start of the season.

This is not for the first time.
