So, what we thinking then guys and gals?

Carlo’s presser at 12:30, so we’ll have a better idea of injuries etc.

If James is out it is going to be a real slog. They'll put 10 men behind the ball and try to do us on set pieces. Not looking forward to this one.

He's out until after the international break Carlo just said in his press conference.

Carlo Ancelotti: “I think that Josh is ready to start the game and the shape will be 433 I think. I think Josh can play 442 as a winger, on the right and the left.”

Yeah that looks good to me, think we need more attacking threat and pace, both of which King brings

Mina being back is good news.

However, missing both Rodriguez and Sigurdsson is a big blow considering much of our threat is from set pieces.

As far as I’m aware the trio of DCL, Digne and Gylfi are almost indestructible and hardly miss games. So seeing 2 of them out for a few weeks and now Gylfi missing you can tell how intense the playing schedule has been over the past 12 months

It's your standard scrappy win, frustrating draw or infuriating defeat. Feels like a good enjoyable performance is almost impossible for us in this type of game. Will take the shit win please!

Any chance we can score early, be 2-0 up at HT and win 3-0 with a goal on 65?

I know some people have still got their eye on Champs League (just can't see it myself), but I think we need to win these kinds of games even to get Europa League. Gonna be tight in there with West Ham, Spurs improving and Liverpool are surely gonna pick up at some point.

Which quite frankly, should be able to do half-asleep. We'll make it difficult of course.

Home games:
Burnley
Palace
Spurs
Villa
Sheff Utd
Wolves

Away:
Arsenal
Villa
Brighton
West Ham
City

If we can't win 6 of those games we don't deserve Europe. That WHU game is looking like the pivotal one.

I'd be made up with any sort of European qualification tbh even if it is the europa conference

God knows what night and what channel the games would be on but coming up against random European sides I've never heard of with Carlo at the helm excites me massively

I think our lack of pace and energy in midfield means we’ll struggle to control games even against poor teams like Burnley. We’ve obviously got better players; it’s just a case of trying to give them a platform to show it.

Not overly interested in seeing king unless it's 442.

Would be delighted to see iwobi centrally if possible, as an 8 or a 10.

We might sneak 7th with 5 wins. 6 should be fine.

That's assuming 7th still gets Europe because if Arsenal win the Europa League and finish below 7th then they'll get a Champions League spot and only 5th and 6th will get Europa League.

And in an absolute worst case scenario if the above happens and Liverpool win the Champions League and finish below 7th then they get a Champions League spot and only 4th and 5th get Europa League.

So we need to be aiming for 5th just in case the gods conspire against us....

King isn't a classic wide midfielder so not sure why anyone would want him there... I know Carlo said he could play there, but he's a wide forward and if you're going to get the best out of him it needs to be further forward.

Iwobi in the 10 with a point to prove could well be a good move, at least give him the chance to succeed or fail in his preferred position.  Usually him as an 8 just seems like such a horrifying proposition, but against Burnley where we'll likely have the ball lots I'd actually be tempted over Gomes.

He did but it was in answer to a Josh King question, it was more like 'he's ready to start [and when he does] the formation [he suits] is likely to be 433, for sure.'

Looks like we have to be strong against claret and blues to get where we need to be.

Burnley - aka 'The Death Of Football' - horrible to play against, can cause anyone frustration
Villa - sporadically over-performing and with an ex-player in their team who is almost nailed on to get goal of the season against us
West Ham - very well drilled and confident from a few scalps and with our ex manager who will be absolutely desperate to beat us and he seems to be getting performances out of his players this season too.

So if anyone has some voodoo-hex ability going on - these would be the teams to use them on please!

I felt like that after the Southampton game. If that 2nd had been allowed, we’d have romped it as they looked well off it up until then, and their heads would’ve dropped.

Think it's going to be a slog. They're defensively solid at set pieces and crossing so that nullifies both of our greatest goal scoring threat(s) really.

So might need a moment of magic from someone. Without Rodriguez and maybe Sigurdsson too, we don't have many who might provide that.

Post by: Toddacelli on March 13, 2021, 08:47:56 PM
We've used similar tactics, relying on strength at set pieces but we're well matched here. Expect to see Dom and Richy back for every corner and Gomes being the only man left up top to use his blistering pace on break (and to hopefully stop him giving away any penalties. He's good at the physical stuff until someone else is - then he just escalates and doesn't know when to stop).

Pickford

Coleman? Keane Holgate Digne

Allan Davies

Iwobi

Doucouré is obviously a miss, but Allan, Davies and Gomes is arguably our best hope of a midfield three who can pass between the lines.

If Burnley watched our recent home performances they’ll want to press high and that three is our best hope to play through a press IMO

Seen them a couple of times recently, they work really hard off the ball to close play down and win it back. They have fight and tenacity I would like to see more from us.

They have one of the best attitudes of any side in the PL. Most games they compete hard, just a lack of ability that hampers them.

Godfrey going on a one man mission to left mid didn't help mind you.

Not sure why we don’t flip Allan and Davies around.

Davies will actually hold his position given those orders.

Quite terrible that but can still see us winning tbh.

Persisting with Holgate at right back is annoying. He’s terrible there, offers nothing going forward and always targeted at the back.

Keane has been poor for a few weeks now as well.

Get coleman and king on, Holgate and Gomes off, go 433 and get some combinations going out wide.

Eh? He's obviously been one of the better players this half. He's been shifted out wide since going 433 where he's not suited to being a winger. Get him in the centre and he'll do work, but when you put him out wide and expect him to behave like an old school winger, and we already know what happens.

Iwobi does look better in the middle, he seems far more comfortable playing a through ball sort of pass than a cross. Needs to do more in the middle though if he wants to stay there though.

Been the only player to get us playing in the opposition half. Good movement. Nice passes into feet in congested areas. Not sure what you're watching.

Don't think he's been any better than anyone there tbh. Such a frustrating footballer. Can't seem to handle the basics. Maybe I'm putting too much on him for the fee we paid for him, obviously not his fault but he just doesn't offer enough.

Thought we’ve looked ok at times. We pulled their defenders around and actually made them defend.

Once again, it’s that lack of pace in the midfield. Seeing Davies, Allan and Gomes “sprinting” back for that Gudmansson chance, Jesus Christ.

I’ve said numerous times; we’re a much better back-foot team. When we go into a game with attacking intent, we we’ve too many holes - we just don’t have the mobility to plug them.

Can't understand how or why he's keeping Coleman out. Seamus might not be as quick as he was but he knows his role. Every week we are targeted there... coincidence?

Best I have ever seen Burnley play in any game. They cannot get any better than that, a perfect half of football from them.

We need to get better in the second half as there is no way they will produce this performance again.

Might be a little more difficult playing the ball over the top going into the wind.

Worrying how teams like burnley that have no interest usually in playing on the front foot come out against us and suddenly press like barca 08/09.

They all clearly see how easy we are to play through and know they can leave gaps because we won’t exploit them.

Every once in awhile, he holds the ball up and slips it between the lines for one of the attackers but mostly he’s just trash.

Easy decision to take him off for someone with legs. Will end up being Davies or Allan to make way.

This is either gonna be one of them where we sort our heads out second half, spawn a 3-2 or 4-2, and forget the first half ever happened, or we'll concede an early one in the 2nd half and have a massively depressing 3-1 defeat while they pass it round us at will.

DCL usually can be ‘let off’ because we give him nothing sometimes but he’s like three clear cut openings since his goal and messed up all of them.

Thought Dom brought it down too well - that's why it dropped so much under his feet he hit it with his other foot. I don't blame him for that one.

What I can't get away from - is the feeling that if we didn't lose or give the ball away needlessly - we would have saved ourselves half our Goals Against this season.

Wish some of Allan's turnovers would start with a pass forward rather than a turen and find Keane. He's not the messiah/a deep lying playmaker, he's a very naughty boy/centre-back.

If some of Allan's turnovers went forward instead of backwards, we could really catch teams in transition.

Even when it doesn’t work they’ve clearly got a plan and committed to it, the teams above us have better players so the best bet to break through is to dedicate yourself to a system.

Hard to pick out a player after that, but those missed DCL chances/touches seemed really crucial.

Some great passes into him got away from him 3 or 4 times. The chance at the start of the second half would've put a whole different complexion on the remainder of the game.

So even though he was more involved than some others who were also very poor, I think his moments were the most important.

I'm not going to be overly critical of him as he's still getting in the right places, but a good striker is walking off with the match ball tonight. 4 really good chances tonight, you'd understand him not getting all of them but 1 out of 4 isn't good enough

FYI - we won’t suddenly play better togger before the end of the season. We’ll win some, we’ll lose - but games will just be a collection of moments, and the old adage of “taking your chances” will never be more relevant.

We don’t have the players in this squad to control games and we are the worst team in the league when running towards our own goal.

In all fairness I reckon if we sorted that right side out we’d be a lot better off this season. Not making excuses because we haven’t been good, but we’ve needed a right back for about 5 transfer windows, we even got sidibe in on load because we knew it was an issue. But didn’t sign him, and didn’t get nobody else in. I’m not sure what Iwobi is but he isn’t a right winger

This is a lot of it, certainly.

Although you look at Burnley's squad and it's not really the whole story.

There doesn't seem to be a base level with some of these performances/players though which is the head scratcher. As in, one week you'd get a 7, 8 or 9 out 10 then another a 2 or 3.

As opposed to say Moyes and West Ham, where you're probably going to get a solid 7 out of 10 every game.

I'm not in anyway telling anyone else how to react, but I'm weirdly calm, when I would normally expect to be raging after summat like that.

We're just not very good yet, and I think we've all watched the team play all season long, and really, despite the results, deep down we know we're still quite a long way off.

The results have covered things up a bit, and that's great, because I'd sooner win and play badly than lose and play badly but I think we can all see there's none of the normal things you expect to see from a side that's going places - no real patterns of play, there's no coherent shape, there's massive gaping holes in parts of the team and we've been mixing and matching and bumbling along somehow.

Yes, it's a gutter because there's chances for European football (and who knows maybe that's not totally over yet?) but I think it's obvious we're a fair way away from being a good side, and defensive resilience can only carry you so far.

As usual, we need to have a very good transfer window, and hope to get all of the transfers right, if possible.

If we play like that next season that's when I'll be worried about the direction of the club under Brands and Ancelotti, with covid and the last of the clear out needing to be done this year was always likely to be a write off and anyone who thinks we were actually in the CL race was delusional.

That's the thing. There's very little sign of us playing much better while logic suggests we aren't going to keep playing badly and winning. I think unless we spend lots of money we will quickly see there's been little to no real progress. This football is as bad as anything we've played in recent seasons

Koeman (58 games) - from Southampton - given a year and a bit before we sacked him after backing him with his own players, we all decided he was shite.

Allardyce (26 games) - few months brought in two players, sacked shite

Silva (60 games) - from Watford - given year and a bit, brought in his own players, sacked rubbish

Ancelotti (54 games) - given his own players, so need to now get rid of him after a year and a bit after he’s brought in his own players.

move onto the next manager, give him a year and a bit with players from all those other managers and his own

It just goes around and around. Everton managers have a shelf life of 50 games before we decide they’re no good and we should move on. We will never progress like that.

In all fairness I reckon if we sorted that right side out we'd be a lot better off this season. Not making excuses because we haven't been good, but we've needed a right back for about 5 transfer windows, we even got sidibe in on load because we knew it was an issue. But didn't sign him, and didn't get nobody else in. I'm not sure what Iwobi is but he isn't a right winger
Look at Burnley; Lowton is out but then Pieters comes in and does the same job.

Coleman was out for us, and we bring in a CB. Different level of player, but points to the lack of consistency. We lack pace and all sorts in our team but we lack like-for-like players, across the board.

Our “home” form is killing us. It’s not really home without fans but nevertheless, something is happening when we play at Goodison that’s just unexplainable. How can you be so good away and so so so poor at home. We would be relegated if it wasn’t for our away form, it’s that simple.

We've also got some proper shite as well I'm afraid

Think that's nonsense. We've got some really good players. We still don't have a style of play. Week in and week out we carry next to no threat and are getting outplayed or at least matched by shite. Weve played really well about 3 or times since the good start. Getting outplayed by Burnley isn't because they have more quality than us

And by the way, Carlo is here to stay. There is no chance I blame him, and even though our home form is shocking, I am proud to have him as Everton manager.

Sometimes we need to look beyond results like this and look at the general direction the club is going - and that is up.

There will be bumps along the way, but we have the right people in charge and we will get to where we want to be in good time.

And this is why it's so fucking frustrating.
If the 7 games we have lost at home were all against the better teams who had superior quality i wouldn't like it but i could except it.
But to have the likes of west ham, newcastle, fulham leeds and burnley turn us over because they wanted it more takes some swallowing.
This is a unique season the like we all hope we will never see again.
However it was a real chance to bust into the top 4.
Not now not anymore after too many insipid performances against the dregs.
And franky after losing at home so many times we don't deserve it.

It's obviously the impact of Covid. It's not just us. Man U went unbeaten for a year away but lost to shit teams at home. Liverpool lost 6 on the bounce at home, to mostly low blocks.

Covid has had a flattening effect across the league, and it's meant that it's easier to sit in and beat teams away, and there's less fear in playing away psychologically.

Also playing every few days means that managers don't get to train. You're just playing, resting, travelling, playing, resting, travelling. It's flattened the league out.

Fully agree. Don’t get me wrong; I still feel sad and hollow inside after this loss, but then I come back to my default setting of just not rating some of these players.

We have some brilliant players in this squad, but the team is often held together with others who aren’t fit for purpose.

I guess the extra kick in the nuts is that there is an opportunity there in the league, and you wonder how often that kind of thing will present itself, and also because we're outperforming what we probably should be doing, it raises expectations of a special season, and then it hurts to come back down to where we should probably be based on quality. If we were in 10th now, and finished the season strongly to get 7th, there'd be more optimism, but to come down from 4th/5th back to 7th/8th feels harder for us psychologically.

It also doesn't help to see our former manager turning West Ham into a genuinely decent, balanced side with multiple threats.

I'm not even bothered about top 4 as we're clearly not good enough for that yet, we'd get absolutely dicked by top teams in Europe.

But Europa is next stage to progress and we're fucking that up with these insipid home performances. Given you need strength in depth we're essentially a RB, a whole midfield, at least 1 winger and a CF from having a 'capable' squad.

Still half a dozen of this 1st 11 aren't good enough.

Grim reading on the BBC website

Quote
Quote
Had Everton's home form come close to matching their away returns this season, Carlo Ancelotti's side would have their Champions League aspirations firmly in their own hands.

Instead, in the absence of their home support, only the bottom five sides have fared worse at home than the Toffees, who have suffered seven of their 10 league defeats at Goodison this campaign.

The two goals conceded on Saturday also saw Everton eclipse their total goals conceded at home in the past two seasons, with five home games and 10 in total still to play.

Yeah but equally so our away form wouldn’t have been as strong as other teams would be expecting to improve their home results too.

Basic summary is that we continue to struggle when we’re expected to win, regardless of home or away. Personally I think it’s more of a tactical problem than a mental one, we’re much happier sitting deep and struggle when we can’t.

I was talking to a mate in the week and told him i think us the shite and sheffield united have probably suffered the most due to no fans being allowed.
The other side of the coin is West ham have benefitted from it not playing in the toxic atmosphere that they had for the last few years.

Absolutely mate, we have far too many run of the mill players to offload, but i'm the wrong end of 50 and am glad to be still alive in this shit year and glad Everton will stay in the top flight, we have to recruit better when this is all over though, the biggest battle is to get rid of the hum drum players we have gathered up the last few years, been our biggest obstacle, so many bad buys.

Not always easy to tell when it’s lack of effort and when the player is carrying a knock or is simply tired. So many players have played before they’re ready to come back. Not to mention the messed up summer. With the euros this year that’s only gonna get worse for next season I guess.

Digne’s corners were embarrassingly bad, but what I don’t understand is why the attacking teams don’t have a player on front of the first defender for a flick on. How many times do corners (not just ours) get cleared  by the first defender on the six yard box

Disgusted by that result. Time and time again we fail to take advantage of our chances to go forward.... if we make it to Europe I think we'd embarrass ourselves again, as we did under Martinez. We don't have a squad good enough to do better but at least show desire... Burnley? Newcastle, West Ham and Fulham... FFS
