Might as well eh, need a win here, get some sort of home form back, Carlo just said Allan and DCL are fit to start, Mina is out.

I don't care how we do it, but we have to win here. It's all well and good winning at Anfield but we have to beat teams like Southampton to back it up.

No excuses, we've had a long rest and have a nearly fully fit squad.

Anyone got a stat on whether we do better or worse in evening kick offs compared to afternoon kick offs ?

These are the games I worry about.

I can see it now:
* us spending 90 mins passing it slowly and sideways
* them playing on the rapid counter with sharp one-touch passing slicing us open through the middle and constantly getting in behind the full backs

They take the lead in the 60th min, then score a well deserved 2nd on the break in the 88th.

Followed by a week of Davies/Gomes/Coleman in the bin shouts, and a scrappy draw at West Brom.

Not looking forward to this at all.

This has to be the acid test though, our losses against West ham, Newcastle and Fulham have really fucked what should have been a cracking season.

It still has been with the away results and where we find ourselves in the league but we really have been pitiful in our home games against the shit sides.

Hard to call this but surely past home performances mean we will be working on putting this right surely?

DCL and Allan starting will make a world of difference.

Have their strikers all scored somewhat recently?

Finally a midfield I have faith in. Davies has really impressed and I think itís his spot to lose.

No goals in the last 15 games for Che Adams and his middle name is Everton. So I'm sure there's absolutely nothing to worry about and he definitely won't be bagging a double in a 2-0 Southampton victory where we can't get near their penalty area

I'd probably pick Coleman at RB since Holgate's had a few noticeable stinkers there recently. Not sure it makes a big difference either way though.

James can pop up wherever he likes, that midfield and the two other forwards put the work in to cover for his fluid positioning.

Those are definitely the first choice midfield and attacking trios. Good balance plus there are so many permutations of how you can change it up depending on how the match goes.

Aye Coleman for me too, especially considering you'd be asking the full backs to provide the width, which Holgate definitely can't do.

Also 2 up top allows us to go direct and beat the high press, so think this lineup is spot on personally.

Theyíll have watched us vs Fulham and will press us high, we need to be able to play through it if we want to get anything out of this.

Davies is key, but as important for me is Keane as it gives us an option to go direct in behind with some degree of accuracy. Pickford will help too actually, he can bypass with a good pass too.

We coped with the press vs Leeds away and most of the better teams weíve beaten press too.

So Iíd assume that itís partly a mental approach in these games where we maybe havenít been expecting it and therefore havenít played at the tempo required.

The problem in the Fulham match wasn't what they did to us but what we did to ourselves.

The lineup was full of slow central players who all got caught standing on top of each other in the middle of the pitch, with and without the ball.

It was very easy for Fulham to space out their back three in possession, distribute the ball to their wingers, and get their wing backs up in support. That led to plenty of 2v1's against our full backs and, in turn, chance after Fulham chance.

If Carlo ever picks another team like that, he's a lunatic.

Caught between wanting to go 442 and just get into them, not much footy but DCL and Richarlison too much to handle for a side that isn't quite at it....Vs going 433 and seeing Davies in the 6 with Doucoure and Allan up and down running the show.

We're maybe not quite in the right place to go 433 just yet and I feel like that could see us flat and get rolled. Maybe save the 433 for someone else.

I john moncur. Either way though I think the energy is crucial if we can start quickly for once we will be fine. With Richy, Davies Douc and a fully fit Allan and DCL we will be fine. Without Romeu and Diallo they will be light in midfield I would think, cant imagine they have many other options. I would like to see Iwobi here too, but not sure where he would fit.

"Good balance plus there are so many permutations of how you can change it up depending on how the match goes."

This is something we've seen before from Ancelotti that I don't really recall from any previous manager (lthough my memory is dogshit tbf) - different formations during a game with the same players. And not just a "with the ball Vs without the ball" set-up - I mean switching it up a bit and reacting to get us on the ball more, or to cut out threats.

Like you say, these are deffo our 1st choice midfield and attack. If we can settle into this as we're not having games every 5 mins, then I think Carlo will feel he has the choice to really work this 1st XI and squad players to turn us into a side that can do what he asks of them during a game.

Exciting times!

I hate playing these, it feels like we never play well against them. I concur with previous comments though, we just have to win this in whatever way it takes. If we're serious with a few months of the season left to play about getting into Europe then we can't keep following up big wins with results against the likes of Fulham, West Ham and Newcastle. We simply have to win these sort of games from here.

Agree to a point, but this was also our 7th match in 19 days, and we were flat and pedestrian, and only upped it as the game started slipping from our grasp, knowing we needed to save something for City and the derby. Fulham knew this was their best chance of getting points as their improving performances would suggest they soon would.
Carlos no dope, fine margins and always risk involved in managing a season. Most, but especially Carlo for obvious reasons, would have taken a Fulham loss and a derby win, rather than the other way around.

Leicester, Westham and Chelsea all dropped points, (RS hopefully to) on the other hand Villa, Spurs and Arsenal all won and right up our coattails.

In our hands. Need to pick up from last week, there should be plenty confidence instilled after that.

First and second third of the season yielded 20 points. 6 wins 2 draws and 4 defeats.

Into the final stretch and a similar outcome gets us to 60 points with two games of wiggle room against Wolves at home and City away.

Got to think 60 points gets us 7th.

Isn't 7th going to be that weird "Europa B-List" instead of the usual?  And even that goes away if we get a surprise Cup winner (have to pray City stay loaded for bear and win both).

Aiming for 5th or 6th, in my head.

Just win, 1-0 or 6-0, Burnleyesque or Brazilian, who cares? Right now 3 points and maintain momentum.

Our goal difference looks quite poor compared to those around us. Could do with giving someone a shoeing to be honest.

Beat Southampton and Villa (our games in hand) and we're in 4th. We then just have to match the results of those around us for 12 games for it to be job done.

That being noted, because i have just said that, and like Shogs have actually checked the table and counted, we will fail on all 3 of those requirements.

Iím confident, but itís still a potential banana skin.

Weíve still got the fundamental issue of being much better when we surrender possession, and play on the counter. Really not sure how weíll approach this one.

Iíve used it to death but thereís a stat knocking about that of the 6 games where weíve had 60% or more possession, weíve lost 5 of them.

Iím hoping Allan is a gamer-changer and stops us being so susceptible to teams with loads of energy.

The problem with Southampton is that they are a decent side who are capable of upsetting anyone, and you never really know which version will turn up. A little bit like us, but worse.

As much as we have improved this season, it's been gut-wrenching to watch us lose against Southampton/Newcastle/Fulham/West Ham (to a lesser extent). This club make you feel like a million dollars, and then make you watch as they burn it all in a firepit.

Please Everton. Just win. Any win will do. An arsecheek. A fluke. It doesn't matter.

Should they not be injured, I could see a case for wanting both players playing against W.brom over Soton. As it's a game more suited to James in particular.
You'd still have them on the bench though surely. So can only figure they've both a slight knock

Team's a bit mad, but I promised myself after being disappointed in the selection last week, that I'd trust the Don Carlo.

Yeah, of the mad team selections, last weeks result was very much the anomaly, so Iím still unenthused.

Couldíve done with Iwobi on instead of Sigurdsson in my opinion, but still hope the Icelandic enigma proves me wrong and has one of his better games.

Maybe the plan is to treat it like an away game against a top 6 side, and just sit back, give up possession, and counter.

Maybe...
Carlo did say in his presser that if weíd been a bit more defensive against Fulham, West Ham etc - then weíd have more points.

Too static, we don't trust our technique or close control in the middle, none of the centre mids seem to want to take the ball on the half turn and move forward when they're in space.

Also no width on the right at all doesn't help.

Weird team. We seem to want to get ahead and back ourselves to defend a game out, but I'm not sure that's a sustainable way of playing game after game, against 'weaker' opposition who pass it around us in triangles and show how to play football.

No lash out from Godfrey, unlike last week, where Alexander-Arnold clearly tried to trip DCL after he fell.  (Now it is not clearly Alexander-Arnold actually made contact when he lashed out, but i think him doing so made that an easier call.)

There's also the matter of the call that was made on the field.  Against Liverpool, the call was a penalty on the field, and VAR was tasked only with deciding whether that call was clearly wrong.  And here, the call was no penalty on the field, and VAR was tasked only with deciding if that call was clearly wrong.  Remember, VAR can come out differently on the exact same foul and still be right, depending on the call on the field.

Did we get away with on with that penalty? Looked very similar to ours last game at first viewing, and not a lot different on the replay 🤷‍♂️

Apart from ours DCL was going to tap it into an empty net?

We're doing well to be anywhere near Europe aren't we (nevermind CL)? We're a million miles off a Champs League team. We can't pass the ball into the opposition half on the ground, or sustain any kind of football in the opposition half.
There's more than 1 way to skin a cat though, your right with the negatives, but there have also been positives and we work to our strengths

Yeah good point, maybe not a clear and obvious mistake by the ref so no way VAR would rule as a penalty

Not sure it matters does it, it just matters if Adams was likely to get a shot away which you have to say he might have, it's just whether you think Pickford had it.

I've never had my opinion yo yo on a player as much as Doucourť.

At times he looks incredibly and seems like he's dragging us though rough patches in games, but then sometimes when you're trying to play out of the back with passes into the midfield he looks like a Sunday league player.

Mans an enigma

Weird player for someone who's supposed to bring short-term stability.

I'm glad we've had him this season on the balance of things but I'm concerned that we can't do better for that money.

I do think there's a lot of exaggeration about our inability on the ball, we have periods when it's great periods when it's poor. Only city seem to be massively different in that respect this season

We're fine in possession when we're unchallenged in our own half, or getting to the halfway line, but after that we shit ourselves and either go back to the keeper/Keane/Godfrey or we go long and hope for a flick on.

Nah, think weíre a young RB and two energetic midfielders away, personally.

This league is 80% pace and energy.

In reference to one of your earlier, pertinent points: I donít think itís that our midfielders donít have the technical ability to receive the ball to feet, in close spaces; I think theyíre just worried that one loose touch and then theyíre getting turned.

Have they had a shot on target?

This is one of those games where they're doing a lot of blustering and if our defence fails we'll look like we've played worse than we have, at the moment they're clearing everything that comes at them casually and we've had a couple more chances to score and a disallowed goal.

We're playing fine and hopefully will step it up as they tire in the second half given the way they press.

That would just affect if it was a red or not... Shame they aren't bothering to do any half time analysis of it because I think it's worth another look.

If the contact starts outside the box it could never be given by VAR for example... Hopefully they show it again rather than another advert break.

Doing what we did against the reds.

Bypassing the press by playing it long to DCL and playing off him and it seems to be working to me.

Think with how sloppy our midfielders can be asking them to play between the thirds against a team like Southampton is a bit suicidal.

But we're controlling the game, allowing them to have it and then negating. Carlo said he wanted to be more defensively aware at home and we are. Yes you'd like a bit more going forward, but we've created all the chances

Iím okay with being defensive, in fact Iím impressed with how effective we are without much of the ball. What I donít like is that we canít keep the ball for any amount of time. Carlo defiantly doesnít send the team out and tell them to constantly misplace 6 yard passes.

Itís just a dangerous game to play to concede possession to poor teams and let them build up a head of steam. Iím buzzing if it gets results like, but these games and this style of play has caused us problems this season.

DCL and Richy are both coming to the ball. They need to work better together in situations without the ball. One of them needs to stay on the last man, and the other needs to come to the ball. It will also help on defensive duties as it wonít allow their defence to push up too much.

Made hard work of it but fuck it another 3 points in what's becoming a typical Ancelotti performance... Get an early goal and shut up shop.

I think given we were missing James, Davies and Coleman I'm just happy we won regardless of performance.  We had a very rusty Allan, Doucoure unable to pass to any of his team mates and Holgate at right back, so yeah, happy with the 3 points!

I think we were lucky tonight tbh.

Need a more coherent plan to score than just set pieces. Get the 2nd and we could've cruised that, but we invited serious trouble there, and nearly got punished.

It's nice that we can defend leads, but there's a fine line between confidence in the defence and costing yourself points regularly.

He's one of the reasons we struggle to keep possession, his passing has been shocking the last few games.

When we have the ball it's like playing with a man down in midfield, the other players must think twice about passing it to him.

I just hope its temporary form and he gets his passing mojo back. Energy wise he's bang on, maybe mentally he needs a break as he was never that bad earlier on in the season.

Get through to monday and then it's broadly 1 game a week. Warmer weather too. Trying to be optimistic but we can grow in ci evidence again attacking wise.

We need to be better in this type of game, but we deserved that win tonight.

Seeing that bench, with the players out I think we sensed we could play at a lower level tonight to get the win and save our players for the tricker games coming up.

We drifted in the last 20 but they allowed us to.  Thought we played some nice stuff in the middle of the park and controlled the game for the most part.

Didnít create many chances like but youíre not playing a diamond, with Holgate at right back and that stodgy midfield.

Think for 70 minutes that was as comfortable as weíve been all season. That made us complacent though and allowed them into the game.

This, plus we clearly had more gears to go in to if we needed... We basically won this at half pace.

Wasn't a great performance but until the dying minutes we were extremely comfortable.

I lean towards brap's opinion more. There wasn' much difference between today and Newcastle/Fulham. We defended a bit better but a lot of the same issues were there.

We're all buzzing with the win, and the points, but it's fair to not get too excited or carried away with that. We'd draw or lose games against some weaker teams, playing like that.
Thought we had more about us early doors , good goal, Keane disallowed goal we seemed to stop

Call him a trash RB, if you want.

But you can't say he is trash period based on his performances at RB, when there is no doubt that CB is his best position.  (I know he played some RB when he was younger and covers there as needed.)
He's clearly not trash as he's ap premiership footballer, so yes it's a bit of an exaggeration, but he's still only 4th best centre back at the club in his favoured position

For people saying we donít create enough chances, weíve created two clear cut chances in the last two games to score goals.

Maybe thatís not enough, but itís a type of chance we didnít creat all season.

Thereís been a tweak in how weíre using the ball, and getting richy in better positions and itís working.

Much, much better than Fulham and newcastle that for me.

We need to be better in this type of game, but we deserved that win tonight.

Seeing that bench, with the players out I think we sensed we could play at a lower level tonight to get the win and save our players for the tricker games coming up.

Ralph is pretty much admitting in his post match they didnít have a chance of winning considering the moment theyíre in.

It was a risk, but it paid off.

Not sure we would intentionally set out to cruise through a game as weíre some way off thinking about that confidence in ourselves.

Think we started off well and first 25 mins looked like it would be 2, 3 goal margin.

They started playing better after the disallowed goal but we were still comfortable until the last 15 mins or so.

As you said better than previous games where we were dreadful and looked under more pressure for much longer in the games

Disappointed with some of the opportunities to have done better on the break in the last 20 mins

The last 5 mins are generally nervy for 95% games of teams of theyíre only winning by one goal

Southampton with a load of injuries and 1 point out of 24 should be pretty shite eh? It's a shame that we didn't do much to separate ourselves from them and play more progressive, aggressive football.

I still think that's an entirely reasonable criticism, while praising the defence, being delighted with the points total and the league position.

yep our goal was really good, richarlison forever.

True yeah there's an argument there for that. For me if we draw or lose that it would be a massive issue having one shot on target and creating fuck all, and like I say I don't think they were very good at all...so basically we've managed to get a win where it could easily have gone any other way, and it has done a few times already.

Delighted to get 3 points anyway, hopefully some kind of mad Carlo rest thing going on.

I am not so sure of that.  Godfrey has still only played CB for us like 5 times.  And Mina can be a liability.

I think all three have strengths and weaknesses at CB, and I am not sure Holgate is the worst of the lot.  Last season, we let less goals in per game with the pairings of Keane-Holgate and Mina-Holgate than we did with Keane-Mina.  Maybe that was in part down to Keane and Mina being too similar, but it was also the consequence of Holgate being great at times.

Weíre considerably more resolute, defensively, when we play with at least one CB at fullback. We donít have a mobile enough midfielder to cover two marauding fullbacks.

Holgate hasnít been great, and heís terrible on the ball, but his role in the team is about balance, as much as anything.

Yet another thing thatís not worth worrying about. Holgate wonít be our long-term RB, the manager is just being pragmatic, given his options.

Tale of the match, had they scored, would have been we brought it on ourselves by not finishing the game off in the 75 mins when we had little to worry about

They could have scored at the end, but we could have scored (mainly Richarlison chance from the Sig free kick) again before that.

Would obviously rather not be in a position where the last 5 mins are open to a win being snatched away

It's comforting for people to explain away such narrow margins as 'it was always under control' but it's wasn't. Decent finish from their forward near the end and it's level, and if the Vestergaard keeps his feet, it's level.

But I mean by that logic then yeah
Cos every team in every game could score a goal or two right?

I'm still having them being limited to them 2 chances over 90 minutes as being stifled. Whether that was due to our defence being good or their attack being shit is another debate but what you're suggesting there is a bit wide of the mark for mine. You'll very rarely see a prem game in which the opposition won't have at least one or two chances to score. So to limit your opposition to that amount for me is pretty good.

Not that I'm fully invested in xg as a determined of success on it's own but the xg for tonight has us at 1.45 and them at 0.67. That's pretty solid numbers

Great save be Pickford at the end, btw, bloody brave stuff.

The chance before that was a bit worrying how easy it was to pass round our midfield 3.

I think thatís the thing that worries me, is that we play at home to a side with zero confidence, we play tight and quite negatively, and yet we still get carved through, quite convincingly.

Plus, rounded down, and rounded up, that xg suggests 1-1, if I was nitpicking😁

Iíd happily admit if I thought we didnít control the game and got let off tonight, but I do think we controlled that game for the most part.

They had chances near the end, but donít most teams when the game is 1-0.

We let ourselves down with how we approached the last twenty minutes and wouldíve only had ourselves to blame if we didnít win, but taking the game as a whole, we controlled it.

Control comes in more ways than possession of the ball and popping it about. We implemented the way we wanted to play and lot better than they did imo.

Tbh, with the way the games are falling this season I donít think weíre going to see this progressive, front foot football weíre yearning for. Itís going to be a case of taking it as a game by game basis now and hoping we get enough results to finish in the European spots.

I think the fact coleman and James canít play twice a week massively hinders us and means means weíre always having to change the way we play.

Hopefully next season when we get a right back and the fixtures fall like a normal seasons weíll see the aggressive, front foot football Carlo wants to play.

I think comparisons to recent losses are way off, there was far more intensity about our play when we needed it and we counter-pressed Southampton's press very well. Especially early on.

As @TheRam (https://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=1602) says, we controlled that game and limited them to one(?) clear cut opportunity.

And, as @GLewis (https://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=258) says, we can't expect a team that has been struggling so badly as home to just suddenly turn up. Confidence would have been wavering and players would have been jittery. We don't have the same swagger about us when we play at home, but a few wins (no matter how they come) will change that.

Scrappy win, I'd have bit your hand off for that before the game.

I don't tune into our games and expect us to dominate possession and cut through teams, we're just not that team. We had a boss 5 games where teams hadn't worked out James yet.

Last night's team though, is the same group of players that that tried to play through teams under Silva and failed. We've added Godfrey, Doucoure and Allan who are all better know for their defensive qualities, so to expect large periods of nice play is unrealistic, especially without a right back.

We've got a solid team, dangerous strikers and a growing winning mentality. I'm loving it. Hopefully the nice football will follow.

That said, however, I'd like to see more of Iwobi.

We were pretty shite again really. Good defensively for most of the game but even that went in the last 15

Pickford made a really good save and just when we are about to praise him for that completely misses two punches in the next few minutes
Holgate was poor again. He's not got the quality on the ball to play full back
Also it feels like we've gone from no game management to too much. Felt like we both went more defensive and concentrated too much on keeping the ball (even when in good attacking positions) right after our disallowed goal. There was no need at that stage because we were well on top.

End of the day winning was absolutely most important but surely it's not sustainable if we continue to play poorly. A sign of a good team isn't playing poorly and winning. A sign of a good team is consistently playing well.
