Title: Wigan V Everton
Post by: Bally on April 25, 2011, 03:40:59 PM
Nothing but a win is acceptable here

think we will see Cahill start this game with Anichebe, woould prefer it if it was with Beckford but you can just see it coming

Wigan is a horrible, horrible place.  The outskirts are nice enough like but Wigan itself is a shithole.

Expect to see Bily dropped.  We better beat Wigan, they are awful but then they have more to play for and who the fuck knows which Everton will arrive.

Post by: Derek on April 25, 2011, 11:58:35 PM
Bily simply can't start after the performance on Sat. Reckon Cahill might get a start, but I hope we don't play too negatively. It is feckin Wigan, after all.

Can see a win. 3-1.

I can see a similar game to the home tie.

They'll need this and it doesn't matter that much for us.

I'd guess a boring 0-0 or 1-1 draw.

4-2-3-1 i assume, not quite the wing(more the inside of the wing i assume)
Title: Re: Wigan V Everton

I doubt that tbh, not with Cahill back.  This side screams 4-5-1 or 4-4-1-1.  I am usually a huge defender of Moyes but if this team doesn't perform today I will be fucked off.

Moyes has made mistakes with the starting lineup. He should have stuck with what was doing well and just used the players coming back as subs, this just reminds me of how we were playing before the 7 matches unbeaten.
Title: Re: Wigan V Everton
Post by: VBlue on April 30, 2011, 09:24:11 PM
Odd.  N'Zogbia exploting our weaker left-side, as The Exectuioner's Blog predicted.  No marking, played onside, Tim Howard coming and then trying to give a penalty away, and then 3 defenders staying back and nobody going to the ball, leaves N'Zobia to curl it in.  That defence was more like curling one off.

I think a lot of the substitutions of Beckford this season have been harsh. He is always seems to be the scapegoat.

Bring off Rodwell, bring on Coleman or Gueye.

We've been poor everywhere, but particularly in defence, we just seem to stand in a line on the edge of our 18. Add to that Baines having a shocker individually and they've had a few chances.

Jags and hibbert  have done okay individually but I agree we have massive issues defending as a unit.

Baines should be the nominated Pen taker, don't remember him missing one.

Missed one in the cup against chelsea. I agree tho arteta should be nowhere near them

Can anyone give a coherent explanation for Moyes's team selection today? I just look at our bench and see players who give their all on the pitch, i.e. Coleman and Gueye, and then I see our players on the pitch who look like they could care less about being there.
Title: Re: Wigan V Everton
Post by: cantoffee on April 30, 2011, 09:55:58 PM
I think everyone is overreacting, as usual. It was a bad half, but it wasn't the worst thing ever, we could very well come out second half and run it and go on to win.

We need some pace on the pitch so one of Gueye, Coleman, or Beckford needs to be coming on to stretch their defense a bit.

To be honest I wouldn't say commitment was the issue, complacency might be

Just another of those games again. Plenty early possesion without creating much, then getting done by one of the oppositions few chances. Another where the defence goes to sleep.

Story if the season really.

Wouldn't mind seeing Coleman on for Hibbert, I'd like to see if he's come along at all at right back and he'd certainly allow us to stretch play on the right side and open up some space. I don't think they've got much coming down their left side at the moment, it's largely been N'Zogbia when they've threatened.

Very much this, it's so frustrating to see us play reasonably well in general but then create relatively little out of it and then make a big fuck up at the other end.  Textbook stuff.

Is that 15 draws now?

And even at that we didn't deserve it if it take 2 penalties to draw with Wigan.

I actually thought Rodwell did what he was probably told to today, break up play and stay in front of the defence. Don't try anything fancy. I don't remember him giving the ball away and he just got the ball and kept it moving, which is probably ok for a 20 year old.

Sounds like I made the right choice in opting for a kick about and pimms in the park this afternoon then rather than watching the game. (I swear I'm not as much of a posh twat as that makes me sound)

We better not lose all our remaining games we usually raise ourselves up for City at the very least and lets be honest we're always wank at Wigan.

Let's just be happy with what sounds like a rather undeserved point.

My take on it:

Weak defensively, you've all overreacted to the Arteta penalty miss, we didn't offer much to be honest and Wigan would be reasonable in thinking they deserved the three points. Overall, though, we're never ace at Wigan and a point away from home is never all that bad. Osman and Howard were superb, team selection seemed reasonable to me, but it's clear the one up front scenario just isn't going to work. Season is petering out.

Oh and I've wanted to throw ad homs at Verm myself for being a bit of a tit sometimes, so I don't blame anyone else for doing it.

Point away from home. Season drawing to a close anyway and overhauling our neighbours has been a long shot for a while now. Cheer up a bit.

Get the impression the players think it's over now and have given it up as a bad job.  Could do with some confidence boosting finish but we got that last season and look where we are now.

Not going to catch the RS and we're likely to be caught by Bolton and/or Fulham.  Maybe it's time to give one or two youngsters a go.

It's not that great either.

Although on most matchday threads there is the usually overreaction, I think todays performance makes the reactions understandable to an extent. Up until last week, we were back to playing some decent football and on a nice run of results and still looking at overhauling the shite and maybe even getting into Europe.

Last week, no one really expected a result, but today the performance from most was poor at best, so it's understandable that some people are disappointed at the way the season is slowly fizzling out. It's not the result that bothers me, more the manor of the performance.

He certainly did his usual with Cahill and Arteta today, his two mates were fit so got a start. I'd have prefered it if he'd had them to bring on later in the game. Not that they'd have probably changed the game given their quiet performances today.

The team has done well in their absence and should have been given a chance again today.

Even when they subs were announced it took about another 6 minutes to actually get them on the pitch.
