Preview

Swansea City are coming off their first defeat of the season heading into this match afteran underwhelming performace at Villa Park where they failed to take their chances on Saturday afternoon whereas Everton are coming off an 2-2 home draw in a match where they were hard done by on referee decisions but played fairly well regardless of the end result, dominant for the majority of the match.

Today is the day I grant a nsno.co.uk poster's dream wish, that poster is riddick who posted the following in the Newcastle match thread:

i'd love to know the record when osman, neville and hibbert all start the game.

Below is a table showing how Everton have performed when all three have started a match together:

Swansea City

At the start of the season there were many 'expert' pundits among regular premier league watchers who had tipped Swansea City for relegation in a case of second season syndrome after losing manager Brendan Rodgers to Liverpool added with selling Joe Allen to the same club however they have had a positive start under Michael Laudrup picking up 7 points from 12 including a 5-0 master-class at QPR on the opening day of the season.

Laudrup didn't have any worries changing the squad in his first season over the summer as he bought seven players for a total of approximately £16m with outgoings of at least £21m including prominent players from last year such Joe Allen and Scott Sinclair. The player who has stood out most for Swansea thus far is Michu who Everton will have to watch out for if they're planning on keeping a clean sheet as the Spaniard has scored 4 goals in 4 matches at the start of his Swansea career.

Swansea will be without new signing centre-back Chico who is suspended, Bartley who is a new signing from Arsenal injured until December and Neil Taylor who has suffered a long term injury early in the season for Saturdays match. Gary Monk is also an slight doubt for the match.

Everton

Meanwhile, Everton will be staring at 3 matches without victory should they not gain three points from this which may add more and more pressure on the players' shoulders however performances so far have been impressive with the exception of West Brom away so there are plenty of positives to take into the match against Swansea.

Many Evertonians will have gone away from the Newcastle match with a bitter taste in their mouths and a sense of defeat following an heartbreaking Demba Ba goal which cancelled out what had seemed like a late winner from Victor Anichebe. This alone would have been bad enough regardless of two legitimate goals being chalked off for Everton at 1-1. There is however plenty of hope that this feeling of being cheated will spur David Moyes' side on going into the game.

There are only two injuries worries for Everton. The first being Darron Gibson who went off the pitch during the West Brom defeat who is scheduled to be out until mid-October and the other is Nikica Jelavic who picked up an injury and was substituted before half time during the Newcastle game though no time scale on his injury yet.

As Swansea haven't been a fixed feature amongst the elite in history, you may not be surprised to know that this is only the 16th competitive meeting between the two sides.

Swansea have never beaten Everton, is that something that fills you with confidence or worry?

Would like to see Neville and Coleman reunited down the right hand side. Hibbert dosen't work when we take the game to people he's a last ditch defender suited for when we play the top four. Jagileka and Distin to be given one more game to sort themselves out before Johnny is brought in. Mirralas in the free role behind Victor.

Howard

Hibbert     Heitinga      Distin        Baines

Mirallas   Fellaini         Osman     Pienaar

Naismith

Anichebe

Going to presume Jelavic is out.  Wouldn't be distraught if Jags stays in but as a unit the central defence needs to start performing (as does Howard).  Heitinga might help that although dropping Fellaini back might be enough to do that anyway.  Mirallas, Naismith and Anichebe are all interchangeable which I like the idea of.

Felli's dominant display when he came on behind the front man last year will have to have a bearing on Moyes' thinking.

We need a presence up front that is reliable in terms of holding the ball up in order to bring our midfielders into play.

Swansea don't have a great defence, so I expect we can get at them and win.

Important game this.. Win here and the wheels to a good season start are rolling again. Draw or loose and it's starting to look more and more average. I want us to flex are muscles and make sure we pick up 6pts from this and Southampton.

Although I can understand the calls for Fellaini in a depper role I think this is a more prudent point.  With Vic/Mirallas up front with support from either Mirallas for Vic or say the option to have Naismith with Mirallas/Coleman on the right - we may struggle to create as much.

Im not Colemans biggest fan but hes looked pretty lively this season, so wouldnt mind him starting at RB. Naismith for Neville and Vic up front. Would drop Felli back to CM with ossie and go 4 4 2 with Naismith or mirallis joining vic up front. YES, i am dreaming.....absolutely no doubt neville and hibbert will both start, moyes will shut up shop from the get go and settle for a point, after the WBA game and moyes comments after it i reckon we will see a negative Everton against Swansea.

After the defeat to WBA and the draw at home we are I danger of losing momentum here.

We need to go for the win against a poor side who will falter badly.

Howard (until we get a replacement)

Hibbert Heitinga Jagielka Baines

Coleman Fellaini Osman Pienaar

The bit about Neville is spot on:

Everton travel to the Liberty Stadium for the early kick off on Saturday, with both teams looking to temporarily go joint-top of the Premier League table.

Granted, it would be very temporary, but it was just an indicator – blogging shorthand if you will – of how they have both started the season reasonably well.

The still-really-fucking-cool-even-though-he-has-the-look-of-a-female-PE-teacher’s-special-friend Michael Laudrup has confounded many of the finest minds in the game by managing to hold together a club that was expected to implode spectacularly following the loss of Brendan ‘sideways is the new forwards’ Rodgers and his Jedi apprentice, Joe Allen who, rumour has it, after every match cuts himself with a razor, like Richey Edwards, once for every time he concedes possession. That’s how much it means to him.

Anyway, Laudrup added a number of players to the squad with the proceeds from the sales of Allen and Scott Sinclair, with the pick of the bunch being the former Rayo Vallecano striker Miguel Pérez Cuesta, otherwise known as Michu. He would be dubbed ‘Pleestu’ in no time at all if he played for Everton.

The elegant forward looks the business so far, with four goals in as many games. Alongside him is Danny Graham, a player you have to admire for his attitude if little else. Bless him, he’s a poor man’s Shane Long.

They apparently have a load of problems at the back though, with a number of injuries and suspensions to more or less their first choice back four. Hopefully Everton, who twatted them home and away last season, will be able to exploit those deficiencies even without Nikica Jelavic who, reports would have you believe, is out for the next two or three weeks.

That’s a blow, but David Moyes has enough options in the attacking positions to allow the Croatian cracker to recover properly. He can replace him with Kevin Mirallas, Victor Anichebe or Steven Naismith and rejig the right-hand side of midfield accordingly if necessary.

A bigger concern is the continued absence of Darron Gibson in central midfield. The ex-Manchester United man is being built up in his absence into some sort of combination of Paul Bracewell and Howard Kendall, which really isn’t the case. He is just a really competent midfielder with decent control to whom the position comes natuNrally.

Most importantly, he is not a converted defender whose first instinct is self-preservation. Phil Neville holds his own in that position sometimes against better sides when we are under pressure and we need the third centre-half that he essentially plays as. Against anyone else, when we look to take the initiative,  he’s a waste of a shirt, turning his back whenever Tim Howard wants to roll the ball out and playing nothing balls across the defence that force the fullbacks to clear down the line.

It’s not his fault, he seems a decent enough sort after all, but his ability in central midfield simply isn’t in keeping with the players he now has around him. It’s no surprise that Moyes is considering moves for free agents such as Thomas Hitzlsperger – who seems ideal – and Owen Hargreaves. The latter is clearly a joke figure in the wake of his infamous YouTube video showing him doing every type of fitness workout imaginable apart from, crucially, playing top level football.

Whenever we get linked with write-offs like Hargreaves, or indeed Michael Owen, there is a tendency to venture that they ‘might be worth a punt on a pay-as-you-play deal’ which suggests that these multi-millionaires are willing to turn up and give their all in training every week in the hope that they might get the nod on a Saturday and actually earn a bit of coin for their troubles.

You can imagine Mrs Owen now, settling in for X Factor in their North Wales mansion when she hears the front door open and a sports bag dumped heavily in the hall. With practised trepidation she calls, “Hiya love, missed you today. Did you get a game?”

“Fucking unused sub again. UNUSED! He couldn’t even bring me on for the last five minutes, the twat.”

“Oh, never mind love. You know, if we tighten our belts a little bit this week we’ll be fine. And I’ve been thinking, I’m bored in the house sometimes and they are always looking for someone to do a few hours in the paper shop. I know it’s not ideal but every little helps…”

If you get any of these bleeders in, on any basis whatsoever, it costs proper dough, guaranteed. Apart from James McFadden getting a short-term deal at Sunderland, obviously. He’ll be getting his ale money at best.

Finally, and apropos of nothing apart from the Europa League being on the telly at the moment, the competition is widely derided by the clubs playing in it because they make very little money out of it. A rather shitty attitude but one that the supporters have generally been browbeaten into accepting. Some incentive is clearly needed then, to get the clubs involved to take it seriously and field their best players. There’s no comedy punchline coming here, by the way, this is a serious suggestion. Why don’t both the finalists get immediate access to the following season’s Champions League gravy train? The winners could go straight into the group stages while the runners-up go in at the qualifying stage.

A short crisis of confidence forced a spot of Googling then just to double-check that they don’t qualify already. They don’t, but the idea has been mooted elsewhere, including in this article, where a parallel is drawn with European basketball who have seen positive effects on their second tier competition by offering the winners qualification to the top one for the following season. If you are still reading, that is.

Agree
We should be dismantling teams like Swansea and Soton with the team we have and the way we have been playing (westbrom aside), even with a couple of injuries. If we don't get maximum points it won't really bode well for the season.
6 points from the next two and we are off to a flyer. 4 points wouldn't be a disaster, less than 4 and its hardly a great start.

Well, it's a bit of a changed team, but let's hope it can do the business.

Reckon it'll be close.

ummm, getting the wobbles now i have seen that.

Should play good football with that side.

Post by: Thom on September 22, 2012, 05:56:19 PM
It'll be interesting to see how we line up today. We could have:

1) Coleman or Neville at right back
2) Mirallas or Pienaar on the left wing
3) Fellaini or Pienaar as the central attacking midfielder
4) Fellaini or Neville in centre midfield with Osman
5) Mirallas or Coleman right wing

Hopefully it's Neville RB, Coleman RW, Fellaini in centre with Osman, Pienaar ACM and Mirallas LW.
Title: Re: Swansea City v Everton
Post by: bravison on September 22, 2012, 05:58:37 PM
Hope it's Neville RB, Coleman RM, Fellaini DM and Mirallas AM instead of Neville DM, Coleman RB, Fellaini AM and Mirallas RM. We need someone who can break up play and actually play football at DM.
Title: Re: Swansea City v Everton
Post by: Cozzie on September 22, 2012, 05:59:29 PM
Any line up that doesnt have neville in midfield is good.

However, Im STILL not sure as Coleman COULD play right back allowing Neville in midfield but surely not.

Big game for Victor this, not often he starts, he needs to take his chance here.
Title: Re: Swansea City v Everton
Post by: blargins on September 22, 2012, 05:59:54 PM
I reckon it'll be

Howard

Neville Jags Heitinga Baines

Coleman Osman Fellaini Pienaar

Mirallas

Anichebe
Title: Re: Swansea City v Everton
Post by: bravison on September 22, 2012, 06:00:18 PM
Or Pienaar AM with Mirallas on the left as Thom says.
Title: Re: Swansea City v Everton
Post by: Derek on September 22, 2012, 06:01:54 PM
Victor/Mirallas combo could be a winner.

Hope Neville RB and Coleman RW. Fellaini further back than last few weeks and hopefully Osman in bulldog form and all over that midfield.

We have more than enough to beat their defence.

"@efc_adamclark: So Heitinga in for Distin, Coleman for Hibbert, though Neville at right back, and Anichebe for Jelavic. Oviedo on bench for Blues."

So Neville is at RB :woohoo:

Great cross from Pienaar. And great run from Big Vic to drag the defence away, well done that man.

Now do we act like we think it's won after half time?
hopefully we stay worried and under pressure to keep our place in the team at the back

What a bizarre game of football. We could be 4-0 up or drawing 2 all.

I hate it when we look so good for the first 15-20 minutes of a game then fall out of it for a spell. We were the same last year, at least this season we're getting some goals.

Superb going forward in that first half. Two well taken goals, and thank God we got the second so half of you would shut the fuck up.

Fucking hell. Still all over the place at the back.  I reckon the wrong centre half has been dropped today

Absolute bollocks. He's cleared off the line and made two tremendous blocks. If anything it's our lack of pace in the centre of midfield that is doing us in.

Maybe it's the fact that Fellaini isn't in front of them that has made the defence look shaky.

If Coleman does the double up moving to right midfield it would be okay but then Fellaini has been excellent further forward.

I think in fairness whole I wouldn't be surprised to see Distin out there at some point, I think it's a collective problem of the 2 CBs and their protection in front.

While Jags has been ok, I think our best combo last year was Heitinga and Distin.

Possibly, but we're all over the place still.  Agree with you about the centre of midfield.  Osman while being talented with the ball, is far too lightweight in there, and Neville is just Neville.  We need Gibbo back ASAP.

We look excellent going forward but piss at the back

Twice he's let his man walk away from him, plus poor clearances when under pressure and he's been poor in the air.  If a goal comes its coming from his area it looks like....

I think we probably look weaker defensively because we are getting hit on the break a bit because we are pushed so far forward.

Not sure we can drop Jags though because he's been the more solid defender today, imo at least.

Think lots of people will agree today, even though he has come in for stick he was superb today.  I think he gave the ball away once.

Used his attributes superbly today and deserves praise.

Baines is just an outstanding footballer and Fellaini is unplayable at times.

Lads, we support a very very good side. One or two away from title winning standard.

Osman is a great player when where on top, when the games gong against us at times he's just a passenger
Coleman adds a new dimension to our play at RB, hope he stays there until Hibbert is back.
Baines is a better defender than he gets credit for

Quote
Here's Marouane Fellaini on whether he handballed the ball in the build up to Everton's first goal (he did, in case you were wondering). "I tried to put my head on the ball," said the Belgian. "I am not sure."

And on his side's 3-0 win: "Of course we are happy, good game, team played well, scored three goals so everybody is happy.

"Swansea keep the ball all the time last year and this season too but we pressed them well and tried to stop them and it was a great job today by Everton.

"Now Everton try to win every game, it is difficult but we try. We have good confidence and we keep going."

Very impressed today, even more that we controlled the game with Neville and Osman in the middle. Neville really should be kept as a RB some of his decision making was way off. Osman was ok moving forward but central midfield isn't the best place for him.  Made up for Vic he had a great game and deserves his goal, looked a bit tired late on though.

Surely with Gibson fit then Neville won't get in the team, he is an obvious weak link but even with him taking part we are playing well. I can see us putting a few bogies to bed this season ie getting a couple of wins at places like Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge, Anfield and the Emirates.
Swansea were overwhelmed by us today and as Moyes said we could have  got 6, easily. I hate being so confident this early in the season, I know I'll be bottling it the longer it goes on ... Early days but I havent seen anyone as good as us when we're playing well , which is most of the time! ;)

I don't think anyone was particularly poor today. Neville wasn't great but he did his job breaking up play and making the simple pass (most of the time).

I think up front we looked the best we've looked for as long as I can remember. Better finishing from Fellaini, Anichebe and Mirallas would have had us at 6 or 7.

Can't really fault them though, we created a hatfull today and looked great. A bit shaky defensively at times but I don't think Heitinga was as bad as some are making out, he had a rough time in the first half but he didn't do anything particularly wrong.

Great game to watch and I doubt anyone wants to play us at the moment.

I disagree, he was ok nothing special but nothing as bad as your making out. His passing was far more accurate and precise  than your making out, the way your putting it he only made half a dozen passes. It wasn't Neville's fault that 2-3 times in the first half Heitinga let his man walk away from him into danergous areas, or was so far away from his man that they had clear heading opportunities from crosses out wide.

Anyway we won, maybe lucky to keep a clean sheet but we should be happy

Probably slightly harsh on Heitinga given that he's only really played one competitve game since the Euros so it'll take a game or two to get back up to speed. I can see him staying in the team for Tuesday night and if he plays well, he might take a bit if moving.

As a critic of Coleman, it was good to see him have a decent game, although we've seen it all before when he gets back in the team he tends to shine initially then tail off. He needs to stay consistent now.

Yea thought Coleman was fairly good today.

I thought he was caught out a couple times with his man floating in behind him, or inside of him. I think he is probably use to being bailed out by his pace, and at this level that won't matter.

That being said, he didn't do a great deal wrong, made some good tackles, and got up and down the line really well.

Would like to see him start again, he could make the position his own.

Surprising line-up, with Neville being retained in midfield, and Seamus Coleman at right-back.

But we attacked from the off, playing good football, like we have done in all our matches bar the West Brom one.
This time we were more fortunate, our first goal was made by a handball by Marouane Fellaini.
Some justice for the two good goals we scored against the toons but weren't allowed to count.

Victor Anichebe scored well, as he lead the line.
In fact all our players were doing well, I thought, till Phil Neville started getting sloppy, when he gave a corner away, attempting to pass the ball to Seamus Coleman.
Phil Jagielka still has difficulty passing the ball to a team-mate, for some mysterious reason, he prefers hoofing it to an opponent.

To be perfectly honest it didn't seem as if Swansea played well, but that's not our concern.
They were unable to handle Fellaini, who was unstoppable at times.
The only way they were capable of stopping us was by collecting yellow cards.

To think where we would have stood if the two good goals weren't disallowed in the previous match.
If we keep this up, Southampton at home shouldn't be much of an obstacle.
What a difference with last season, when it was almost painful to watch how poor we were.

Going to watch the extended highlights later on but from the sounds of it we played cracking going forward while being quite leaky at the back.

Makes for exciting football matches compared to some of the dire shit we have put up with Aug-Jan last few seasons.

If we keep this up an we can still do our great performance in the latter half of the season we are going to be serious contenders for Europe in some guise.

The other reason some people are unhappy is Anichebe's performance.
It's a shame that the sulking lazy bastard had such a great game  :headbang:

Spare me the "it all evens out over a season" bullshit. It doesn't.

I didn't say it does, but even you can't deny it was points we didn't expect.

This. In fact I'd take 0-0 now.

 ;)

I'm gobsmacked at how well we've been moving the ball about so far this season. Nice one touch football, pass and move instead of the usual Phil Neville hoof ball. Still guilty of it from time to time but i can live with a but of it!

Mirallas is gonna be the tits!

Oh shut up.

No-one wants Anichebe to fail and everyone has acknowledged he had a good game today, we just need to see it from him more often.

Well to be fair they are only going to show the best chances and Swansea did have a few.

But don't let me pour water on the MOTD conspiracies against us....

You messing lad?

Let me guess, if it was Man United we would of been first on and been on for about 20mins?

You know that's exactly what would of happened....

If i remember someone from the bbc said the schedule was based on the number of goals and entertainment value.....

How did we not get a better showing on today's performance...... Best of the day by far... Some of the football played today was fantastic... Lots of chances for both sides and 3 goals..

It did look far more even than it was in those highlights.  Made out that the red card made all the difference.  Post match commentary redressed it a fair bit.

You know we've had a good day when people are imagining anti-everton  bias on motd coverage.

Well we were second behind a very good Southampton match, I found absolutely no problem in the coverage.

I'm not talking about coverage time, but about perceived negative bias in today's motd coverage. People are picking up on things that just aren't there.

Not a problem but the highlights didn't reflect our dominance or our play...

Well black n white stats wouldn't account for that...   my opinion is based on comparing the highlights to the actual game...

They seemed to show the minimum..
The highlights would have you think we were very scrappy...

Where on earth did you dig that one up?
Or it it soley based on your perception?

The commentator said we should have scored six.
Some people are never happy, even when we win convincingly, which everybody has acknowledged.

Because they are sad deplorable moaning twats, would be my guess.

Really? You mean this?

Yes l do. And if you cant see that there were things yesterday that we could have done better you're a fool.

At times yesterday we defended like a bunch of pissed up idiots on a Sunday and our finishing at times was truly laughable.
