Title: Aston Villa vs Everton
Post by: Verm on April 05, 2010, 10:07:13 PM
Time for a little positivity.

We know they don't finish strongly and they play an FA cup semi final 4 days before we play them so if they get beat by Chelsea their confidence could be knocked even lower. A performance like the one away to City may just be enough. We need Arteta back though to get anything from this match.

Howard

Neville Jags Heitinga Baines

Fuck knows Arteta Osman Pienaar

Billy

Yak

We play best when we have ball players in the team. See Man U for example. Lets produce something like we did the last time we beat Villa at Villa Park. We played sexy then.

We really shouldn't have any excuses off not getting anything from this game. All their efforts and focus will be on the semi-final (hopefully it goes to extra time).
You wouldn't put it past Everton to get a result similar to the one at Man City two weeks back. On the other hand much depends on Arteta's fitness. Sitting on the fence for this one 1-1.

There was a chance he was going to make the squad for the WHU game. So hopefully in 10 days time he should be ok.

I really don't know how this game will go, if they lose their semi, they will be on a downer. As has been the case for us to much this season, it depends which Everton turn up.

These games have been really tight the past few years. On paper you'd say we have the upper hand, given our rest and their now regular end of season slump, but it's hard to say.

I really want them beat, though.

I think Cahill/Billy need to fire, and arteta just needs to be there for some creativity.
Recently we only seem to step up against quality oppposition, and after recent years i count Villa as a game we step up for.

I think:
--------------------------------------------Howard--------------------------------------------------
Neville---------------Jagielka--------------------------Distin-------------------------Baines
--------------------------------------------Heitinga---------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------Arteta----------------------------------------------
----Bilyaletdinov-------------------------------Cahill---------------------------------Pienaar-
-------------------------------------------Yakubu----------------------------------------------------
1 - 3 as long as we dont concede early and villa park the bus.
Billy, cahill, yak, and young

Last chance saloon, loss or a draw is not good enough, Europe is in the balance.

But what happens if Villa beat Chelsea and get to the FA Cup final before they play us? Will they take the last Europa spot anyway, leaving the game from our perspective meaningless?

Any sort of a win will do. As for Europe, it's gone.

I don't agree. I think we've made it harder for ourselves wit dropping points in our last two results, but if we can win at Villa we're only a point behind.

Granted, we'd still be relying on us not dropping too many points and them imploding, but thats normal for them.

I firmly believe Europe is still a possibility, but we need to win at Villa first.
Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Everton
Post by: cad on April 07, 2010, 11:38:45 PM
It would be typical of this season if we followed up 2 'poor' results with a win against Villa,

Playing against the better sides has tended to bring out the best in us. That's what I'm hoping for anyway. 1-2

Don't care who scores, and not worried about Europe. One game at a time, and see what we're left with. :)

Forgive me as a football fan for taking part in a football competition. The 'wanting to win' bit kind of goes hand in hand with the 'fan' bit.

BTW... Why do I only have a post count of 20+ ? Are the old threads gone for good?

It's cool really. I haven't figured the smilies in the replies out yet lol. I'm more of a selfish guy, and would gladly sacrifice our teams points this season in order for the honour of being the fantasy champ ;o)

Baines

Heitinga
Rodwell

Pienaar

Bilyaletinov
Saha    (Cahill)
Yakubu

Fuck it got nothing to lose and everything to gain. May aswell try and suprise a tired villa team with some mad arse tactic and scare the shit out of them. Baines should be allowed to attack like mad.

just let the team off the leash a bit. let bily have some shots from distance and pienaar run with the ball into the box.

requires workrate from the two brothers up front.

Aston Villa 2-4 Everton

Miner, Petrov    Rodwell, Saha, Yakubu x 2

They were terribly leggy against Chelsea. That said, games between them and us have all been rather tight, minus the F.A Cup game last season. Would like to give them a bit of a beating at their own place.

Stifle their only tactic - the counter (which tiredness seems to have hampered anyway) and I'm positive we can win.

I think 2 DM's (Johnny and Rodwell) would be useful here and rely on a counter attacking game similar to the approach we took at City. Although Moyes probably won't do this, this is what I would do.

I'd like to see Rodwell alongside Heitinga. And 3 of Peinaar, Osman, Bily and Cahil... playing behind the Yak.

Defence picks itself.

2-0 the Blues. When we click, we're excellent. We're a better team on paper too, if we can cope with their pace.

We are so much better on paper. We can't match Young, and Milner is class, but come on. Heitinga and Jags are both better than Dunne. Baines is better than Warnock. Saha and the Yak are better than any of their strikers, it's just that both of ours aren't in good form. They have no one with the guille of Pienaar or Arteta imo. Like I said, Milner is class though.

Nobody hates him, its just that hes a bit limited and when we are in possession going forward it doesn't flow as well with him in the side. His goal contribution or commitment cannot be questioned in the last 2 months though. Back to his best.

fair point. Just annoying sometimes cuz he's fantastic on his day. Which is becoming more often atm.

What an elaborate waste of a free kick.

Yeah, too worried about the counter before half time, Baines should have whipped that in.  Good so far though, a bit more closing down second half and we could just do this.  Bily and Yak need to pick it up second half though, I can see they are trying, but both have had the touch of rapists today.

You prefer to give stick to players when they dont deserve it?

(JK)

Seriously though, appreciate Cahills strengths and forgive him his weaknesses. He shows time and time again he represents significant threats in front of goal, moreso than most of our strikers tbh.  If his shootin' boots had been on from the start of the season he could easily have had 15 goals this season.

Anyway. come on Tim, get your hat trick.

Of course. Where did I say it didn't?

I'm stoked that Cahill's playing well tonight.

Several people have made their mind up about Cahill, being deadwood or technically inferior. Likely it will continue for several years until he is past his best, then they will be right. Praise contains well done, I'm glad he has proved me wrong today, Criticism consists of loads of threads and comments, saying how shit he is and how right they were.

Sorry, but 5 at the back invites pressure.  If you gonna bring someone else, bring some legs in midfield, even if it's a kid.

When will we start closing down crosses instead of trying to win the header.  Fuxake :headbang:

Our inability to focus until the final whistle is why we don't have enough class to be top 4.

It costs us in Europe and it's cost us in the league, yet still they can't do it. I'd love the opportunity to walk around the dressing room with a baseball bat sometimes and see if they could focus then.

The story of our season.

Not being in Europe might have bad consequences on our ability to sign new players or keep players like Peanuts.  Its never good to be out of Europe imo.

Why do Villa always have energy in the tanks in the last 10 minutes against us? They look completely shot against other teams.

I'm not being funny but Carew was offside for their second. Even if it was an own goal he was active and caused it. Bad shout from the linesman.

Besides, Young should have been off the field for the stamp on Pienaar's bafanas.
