Crystal Palace v Everton FC
Selhurst Park (Capacity: 26, 309)
Saturday 9th November 15:00
Premier League Match 11

Everton's last 5 domestic matches 2013/2014:

Everton 3-2 Newcastle (Lukaku x2, Barkley)
Manchester City 3-1 Everton (Lukaku)
Everton 2-1 Hull (Mirallas, Pienaar)
Aston Villa 0-2 Everton (Lukaku, Osman)
Everton 0-0 Tottenham

Crystal Palace's last 5 domestic matches 2013/2014:

Southampton 2-0 Crystal Palace
Liverpool 3-1 Crystal Palace (Gayle)
Crystal Palace 1-4 Fulham (Mariappa)
Crystal Palace 0-2 Arsenal
West Brom 2-0 Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace's 2-0 defeat away to West Brom on Saturday increased their run of Premier League defeats to 7 and a total of 9 defeats in 10 games which leaves them rooted to the bottom of the table. With the lowest goal tally in the league (6) and the second highest concession of goals (21) then it's easy to see why they're in such a predicament. However, hope is not all lost as history goes to show that poor starts don't necessarily mean relegation is a fact.

As you can see, there have been four instances in which teams who have accumulated 4 points or less after ten games and have still managed to stay up. Southampton have managed to do it on two occasions whilst Blackburn also achieved this feat having picked up 4 points after ten games. The only side to do it with 3 points at this stage, like Crystal Palace now are Everton who replaced Mike Walker with Joe Royle 19 years ago this weekend. Perhaps a good omen for Palace considering they're due to appoint a new manager soon.

Potential Line Ups

(http://i.picresize.com/images/2013/11/03/FCudT.png) (http://i.picresize.com/images/2013/10/27/NajcB.png)

Everton

The Tottenham game was a bit of a damp squib at the weekend with a lacklustre first half and an improved second half with any real chances created by either side being a true description of the drab 0-0. The outcome of the Crystal Palace match will determine whether this will be seen as a good point or 2 points dropped as we head into the international break. The lack of chances in the Spurs match shouldn't have been much surprise as both sides prefer to have a lot of the ball before carving out chances.

Roberto Martinez's new style of play stands up against the other quick starters in the league this season. Having just nudged ahead of Southampton and Manchester United's average possession stats, Everton follow only Manchester City and Tottenham from the top 8 teams in the league. Considering Brendan Rodgers has a reputation for possession football, it may be surprising to see Liverpool a distance behind the rest.

Match stats and Injuries

Crystal Palace have 5 injury concerns ahead of this match with Jack Hunt out with a broken ankle, Johnny Williams out with a foot injury and Glenn Murray out with an ACL knee injury. It's likely to be too early for club captain Paddy McCarthy to return from a groin injury whilst Guedioura is likely to be missing with a rib injury.

Similarly, Everton have 5 doubts for this match. Darron Gibson is out with an ACL knee injury and Antolin Alcaraz will not be fit until after the international break. Arouna Kone has a knee problem and Apostolos Vellios also has a knock. Romelu Lukaku will be a concern following his collision with Hugo Lloris which forced him off with a knee injury.

That is an awful group of players they've got there. Going down for sure.

Might be tough if they appoint a new manager soon but as long as we can break them down I fancy us to win.

1-3 for us I reckon.

This could be the one that we majorly fuck up in and get beat or totally destroy them, we always seem to be the team that teams like this break their duck on, same as we always seem to be the ones to end winning streaks.
We should batter them and after the first half performance of the spurs game they're gonna come out all guns blazing with the hope of scoring early and parking the bus .

Hope Bob Martins has his thinking head on,

Reckon Martinez will use his squad for this one.......Deluofeu, Jella and possibly Naismith will start and Lukaku, Mirallas and either Barkley or Osman on the bench......just my opinion.

I think Mirallas and Osman will drop to the bench for Deulafeu and Barkley. To drop Lukaku against these would be madness. He drew his first blank in five against Spurs- any striker would have struggled to score yesterday given the service they got.

Nah, we'll win this. They just don't have the players to have the 'new manager bounce' effect. It'll be more of a 'crushing reality for the new manager' effect, imo.

Don't know why we wouldn't start the strongest XI.

There'll be plenty of scope for fringe players as the Christmas period progresses and enforced "rests" come into play through general bumps and bruises.

It's a must. A team playing shit, no manager, no win in 10 (I think), there's no game the week after- we've got to go for it. Maybe give Mirallas the hook in favour of Deulafeu as said previously.

Was thinking Coleman myself, I think he's looked a little ragged this season and was quite lucky not to concede his third penalty of the season yesterday.

I'd play the usual XI but I don't think Martinez is the guy to do that in every game.

I've been a bit disappointed to see Stones not involved a bit more. Obviously I don't know how he's been doing in training and stuff, but I'm surprised we haven't tried 3 at the back yet, or switched to it during a game.

its not dropping him mate, just resting an important player. After Palace we have some huge games coming up and cant afford our in form players getting injured. If we cant beat Palace without Lukaku we don't deserve top 4.

I guess being knocked out of the League cup is a factor, plus Jags and Distin are the preferred central defensive duo who have both managed to stay fit so far during this campaign and have kept quite a few clean sheets. One thing that has surprised me is Stones seems to be ahead of Heitinga in the defensive pecking order so I think Martinez clearly rates him but the backline isn't something that should be tampered with in the same way as the midfield and the forward line.

Stones will get more chances but it could be next season before we see him play 20+ games during the next campaign.

Changes should be tactical not to rest players as if it's not an important game.  Players should be dropped because on yellows/in poor form, as Ram says definitely not rested like its a cup game

Mark Lawrenson

Quote

The Crystal Palace managerial situation worries me a little bit now. A few names have been mentioned but caretaker boss Keith Millen is still in temporary charge and talk of an appointment has gone very quiet of late.

Everton are still ticking over nicely, and got a good point against Tottenham last week.

The Toffees have got enough competition for places to freshen things up when they have to and, with Palace managerless and on such an awful run of seven straight league defeats, this should be a comfortable victory for Roberto Martinez's side.

Lawro's prediction: 0-2

Paul Merson

Quote

Crystal Palace v Everton

Everton got absolutely ripped in the first-half against Tottenham last week, but I think this game will be a walk in the park for them. I don't know where Crystal Palace are going to win their next game and it's a worry that they still haven't sorted out their new manager. Why didn't they ask Ian Holloway to stay a couple more weeks? Games are starting to run out for them and if the teams above them get a couple of results then they could be nine points adrift in no time. I have to go for an away win here.

PAUL PREDICTS: 0-2

I don't think we've played well enough recently to take chances resting anyone.

I'd be gutted if he missed the derby but using a cliche all games are worth the same amount of points.

I think overall if rather win today with him picking up a yellow than have him for next week but have the confidence issues to deal with of having not won at Palace.

Your making it sound like either situation is inevitable and it's not. If McCarthy was such a card magnet he'd have missed a huge amount of his career through suspension already and that's not the case.

Agreed....and let's not forget he was much more influential in the second half last week, but at no point looked like getting a second yellow, so he does appear to be able to control himself while having an impact on a game.

Thats all we are under martinez tippy tappy football mainly in our own half.
At least under moyes last season baines and coleman were bombing foreward and we played some great stuff.
If we had lukaku last season we would have ended up top 4.
On the whole we have played poorly for long periods in quite a number of games this year.
Title: Re: Crystal Palace v Everton
Post by: toffee_scot on November 09, 2013, 10:09:42 PM
Glad it is half time, Martinez should hopefully sort something out because we don't really look like scoring especially as the Crystal Palace players grow in confidence and we take too long to pick the perfect pass and move up the pitch thus allowing their defenders to regroup effectively.

I will not be surprised at all to see Barkley coming on in the second half, he will certainly inject some life to the attack and link up better with Lukaku and Mirallas. While Osman can at times prove to be very useful, we really should be at the stage where we are mainly utilising him as a squad player.
Title: Re: Crystal Palace v Everton
Post by: Bluedylan on November 09, 2013, 10:09:55 PM
It's not really that baffling. We're learning to play patient, probing football still, and we have a number of people making the wrong decision in the final third.

The other team are having the occasional counter, and look dangerous from crosses into the box. It's fairly run of the mill for a team trying to develop their style and making mistakes at key points, and for a shit team trying to nick a goal at the other end.
Title: Re: Crystal Palace v Everton
Post by: blueToffee on November 09, 2013, 10:11:13 PM
We started ok, Osman had a couple of decent openings but fluffed them and seemed to slowly let them back into the game from then.

Palace could've easily had a couple but everything we've tried for the last half hour has been messed up. Either through poor decision making or poor execution (corners were just awful). We've still had a fair amount of possession in that time but lacking imagination to make a good opening. We are often too content to pass it around sideways/backwards then after passing back enough a defender gets on the ball and when you leave it the CB's to distribute too often you're asking for trouble.

This game is not that surprising as we over rate ourselves, we are not that good really. Aspirations for top 4 were never realistic but we should still make top 7 or 8 which in the circumstances is OK. The idea that we are good enough to wipe the floor with anyone is ludicrous. Martinez is turning on a Moyes mode, i.e he does not trust the younger players, Delafeu and Barkley and picks the plodding Osman every game, as well as a completely ineffective Mirallas. There are few goals in this side, no shots on target against Spurs and none today. If he reacts and drops Osman and someone else to the bench why does he always waste the first half to find out he has picked the wrong team?  I like Roberto, but he is no magician.

Looking complacent and lacking the urgency and drive to be infront. Final ball and attempts on goal have been lackadaisical and poor.

Lukaku has been crowded out and chances haven't really opened up. We need to get the breakthrough and then when Palace open up we can pick them apart more easily.

We've allowed them into the game by not being determined or clinical. We could use a bit more youthful exuberance, but we need to remain calm and not get desperate.

Mirallas looked far brighter on the left. He may as well not be on the pitch on the right side.

We could bring Pienaar to the middle for Osman, Deulofeu on the right and Mirallas out left.

Probably still prefer a straight swap of Barkley for Osman and Deulofeu for Mirallas though.

'Taxi for Petr Cech! He's been spending too much time on the drum kit by the looks of it as he lets a tame shot from Stephane Sessegnon slip through his hands after good work down the left from Liam Ridgewell.

Bluedylan might now admit that Roberto has done the obvious i.e get Osman and Mirallas off just like I suggested earlier  except as I also said he has wasted half of the game finding out the obvious. Let us hope we can now turn in a better and winning second half. The aforesaid players need to be benched for a few games and in the case of Osman only brought on as a sub.

Credit to Crystal Palace. They were disciplined, worked tirelessly and made things difficult for us... but we were shocking.

Why is Baines being allowed to continue taking set pieces with the day he's had when taking them? Why aren't we crossing the ball when we have the chance?

Only we could make Palace look like an established Premier League side.

Poor performance. Too slow build up in the final third. Barkley late on had me frustrated as he typified the problem of holding on to the ball too long. Have to play it quicker when teams are sitting fairly deep, otherwise we play sideways/backwards to end result.

We need more players up ahead. Should have taken out Osman. Put Mirallas central and the Barca kid at the right. We never really went all out even when we were dominating at the end. No real pressure even when they were so tired at the end. The substitutions seemed very predictable and the game except for their chances seemed very predictable too.

Well, I guess the good news is we have moved up to 5th with the draw.

It's almost like we've gone back 3 months to August with a couple of 0-0 draws and little attacking quality in the final third. But credit to Palace, they worked really hard and to be honest there was always going to be a point in the season where they would pick up again and it is unfortunate that it was against us.

We have a lot of work to do though in preparation for the Liverpool game, for a start the defence needs to get their act together as Sturridge and Suarez are significantly better players than Chamakh and Dicagoi but at least Martinez has time to sort things out.

It's not always the managers fault...sometime players have to take responsibility for that sort of dire mediocrity.

not the manager's fault when players make simple mistakes and their usually excellent delivery is piss-poor

it's not his fault when the players make the wrong decisions just outside the 18 yard box or give the ball away needlessly either

it is his fault for starting with Osman though, and to be honest, Mirallas needs dropping

Indeed, I think Martinez got his tactics right today, you could argue that Osman and Mirallas didn't merit a starting place but perhaps Roberto saw Deulofeu and Barkley as impact subs who could change the game and he was giving Mirallas another chance to get his act together, I don't think he was as bad as last week but it was definitely the right call to sub him off during the second half.

I just hope the players are really up for the derby coming up fairly soon.

Agree to a certain extent. Could've changed formation perhaps considering we were butting our heads against a wall for a 90 mins. Also despite the subs not making much of a difference, I still maintain that starting with Osman and Mirallas was a mistake.

There were too many poor performances today though. Baines and Coleman were (attacking wise) abject, Barkley/Osman/Mirallas/Deulofeu/Lukaku all off their games. Need a few of them at least to step up.

I think this is my point summed up really well. Players not quite taking responsibility in the game at the moment. Too often when confronted by some space in the box or near the box, they're all looking to play a little dink or a flick, rather than getting hold of it, driving into space and either shooting or committing a defender and being the one that makes the difference.

It's why Osman and Barkley playing poorly really makes us look poor. They both at least take a shot on. Pienaar, Mc Carthy and Barry will generally do anything other than shoot.

Yeah, difficult to find many to praise. Thought Howard was solid when required, but hardly needed. Both centre backs did their job pretty well given that they had a large amount of space around them and I thought Pienaar was probably our best player further up the park.

He has been quite unfortunate, he may not be the most talented player we have but he has proved useful on quite a few occasions.

If he had been playing in this game I would rather he had started ahead of Mirallas and Mirallas could have come on if Naismith was not performing effectively - plus Kevin would have got the message that his place in the first team isn't secure so he would have hopefully put in a much better performance.

Otherwise after Barkley and Deulofeu came on, I don't think Naismith or Jelavic would have made a big impact if they had come on later in the game for either Pienaar or Lukaku.

Agree, I would like to see him start the Derby for Mirallas now. We won't have much space and he's more of a grafter and more capable of a goal in the box than Mirallas. That's going to be important.

To be honest I was very surprised we had that much possession even though we dominated the game on the whole as Palace also had a few spells where they were the more attacking team and we gave the ball away a lot.

Of course possession doesn't count for everything but still - If we have the ball, the opposition can't score.

There are no excuses for not winning that. Palace are the worst team in the EPL without a shadow of a doubt.. Personally I'm starting to get worried about the teams lack of cohesion. If we play like that against the other lot? get ready to be embarrassed,  due to a home derby tanking. Hope Ballys wrong about the possibility of the wheels coming off. The next four games will give us a good idea of that. Im fucking nervous after last week and this. None of our players with the exception of Howard and Barry deserve more than a 5. Howard 7. Excuse for what?

The mail reports that as "it didn't go down too well" but, if you actually look at that photo there's only one cunt giving it big licks towards him.

One guy beneath the lad giving him the frenchie looks like he's taking exception to the lad telling Distin to fuck off, there's someone giving Distin the thumbs up and another individual is clearly applauding him as well.

So the lads been gobbing off, distin's gone over to tell HIM to back the team instead of gobbing off and the lad has turned it on twitter to make it sound like Distin was having a go at our fans?

Fucking twitter hey!

Distin sounds a bit up himself anyway tbh. Don't think it's the first time he's criticised the fans and he doesn't tend to be able to take criticism.

He's openly arsed.  I wish more of our players were sometimes.

Im not being funny, but if the team dont play to the best of their ability. Why should fans who've paid around 80-100 quid applaud them? Do you know how many hours work that is on a minimum wage?. Is this at the end of the match? if so Distins in the wrong. If the games still playing, the lads in the wrong

I always find it a bit perverse that fans talk about players not being able to take criticism, when it's usually abuse. But it's then beyond the pale to criticise the fans in anyway what so ever.

Frustrated people all round leads to arguments.

You're right and wrong. I remember one season where I missed about 4 aways all season, cost me a fortune and we didn't win a single game on the road in the league and were shit most games. Thing is I bought those tickets knowing full well we were probably going to be shit/get beat again...it was a choice. You can't abuse players if they're not performing or not winning just because you've chosen to go the match at your own cost.

The only time a player should be told to fuck off is if he's clearly not arsed and isn't making any effort...that can't be said for Distin.

I'm fairly sure Distin will think twice before chatting to fans in the future.

And the same knobheads will moan about modern players not interacting with fans and living in a shell when Dixie Dean took the bus. If fans had been as awful as they are now, he'd have hailed a cab too.

I didn't notice any particular adverse reaction at the end.

Most people were just getting off an there were a few who were applauding.

There was frustration during the game but nothing out of the ordinary.

Yes. I'm not implying everyone else is doing the same, I think the photo makes that clear! As Distin has said there is no such thing as a guaranteed victory in football, and that's no way to react to one of your own players after a draw away from home.

Could go 8th tomorrow if Tottenham beat Newcastle at home, City beat Sunderland away and United be Arsenal at home.

Will be shocked if we are higher than 7th.

What would that be, 2 maybe three points off fourth spot? Absolute disgrace that.

Will be shocked of no one would have taken that at the start of the season.

You'd think we were in a relegation battle on here at times.

Not the best time to play Palace. Players looking anxiously over their shoulders for when a new guy comes in. The main focus on Football Focus today, maybe giving a bit of a boost, and they can't be bad all the time

Really disappointed with 2 points from the last 2 games. Id sort of had in my mind, that we're gonna get 0 points from liverpool, arsenal and utd. Its going to feel like we're free falling abit. Hopefully we can somehow get 2-3 points so confidence doesnt get low. To finish high up the table you really need to be beating teams like palace. If anything the last 2 weeks have been a reality check

I would back us to get points from those games more than I would Palace and the like. Our passing style suits the better teams who play in similar ways and are less likely to press and harry.

I do wonder if Martinez enthusiasm breeds some kind of apathy amongst some fans.

Wigan fans didnt seem too fussed that they eventually went down under Martinez. Not many calling for his head etc.

Sometimes its as though you're not allowed to criticise the fella coz he's nice and smiley and says the right things.

Todays performance was an absolute shambles. We should be absolutely destroying chumps like that with the players we have at our disposal. Its Martinez fault we didnt.

Lets not get too hysterical. There's not too much to criticise Martinez about. I was pissed off we didn't hammer Palace but they were going to get a result sooner or later. Chelsea drew with WBA; does that mean Mourinio should be getting loads of shit?

The EPL, this year, seems to be the most competitive for ages so you can't go away from home home and expect to hammer teams, even those as seemingly shit as Palace.

We played shite today but we're still up there, lets get a sense of perspective. With the money we spend we can only hope to be about 6th best in the division, depressing I know but that's modern footy

The fact that it was the second drab 0-0 makes it seem a lot worse than it is.

Having said that, I do dislike this "we've only lost once" phrase people (probably even myself) say. We've drew 0-0 with Tottenham and Crystal Palace, Liverpool lost to Arsenal and beat Fulham in similar fixtures.

What you rather?

I only took Liverpool as the team as Arsenal and Tottenham are of similar stature as are Fulham and Crystal Palace.

No you're wrong Gash

I really rate him. I think he's a very good manager but there may be some fundamental flaws in his approach. In concerned that whilst he is changing our overall ethos he may introducing weaknesses.

Like with moyes I will criticise him when I feel necessary.

Yesterday's performance was shite. You could see Martinez looking concerned about 20 mins in. He did fuck all about it though depart from perhaps switch and switch back the attacking midfielders.

I'm pretty sure most on here know my views on Bob Martins, yesterday was more to do with his playing staff being atrocious and not having the bollocks to destroy a fucking shite palace team, than it was to do with him, maybe starting with Ozzie may have been a mistake, but he was chosen and played no worse than anyone else in a blue shirt.
My biggest problem is this 72% possession and fucking nothing to show for it but jags hitting the bar with a header.

I was fuming with that display yesterday one of the worst I've seen for a long long time.

As a rule, people who ask 'why go on about Liverpool' or say 'who gives a shit about Liverpool?' are people that didn't grow up in the City with the intense rivalry that brings.  When you're living and working alongside Koppites, it's intense.  Then you'd understand why we often measure our success against theirs.

Fuck me.
I've been out the loop for two days and I come on here to find the result and there's pandemonium for a draw away.
Yes it sounds like the performance was shit but that is what they work on in between games. Martinez's job this week is to work on what they did wrong and improve it for the next game.
You know what they say about teams who played badly and still get a result. Let's not lose our heads.
Yes you feel like shit this week if you saw the game but have faith. If things are that bad and we are drawing away from home, when they improve (and they will) - we'll be right up there again.
