This.

Be nice to see some metal and determination in midfield from the boys, even the occasional flash of intelligence/creativity?

          Joel
Coleman Jags Distin Baines
            Barkley
 McCarthy Besic McGeady
           Naismith
            Kone

Score prediction? Not confident so would take 1-1. But on a normal day we should beat them 2-0.

Possibly, just siding with those saying he needs a go at playing more deep and creating things from there, will give him a bit more time on the ball as well. I'm neutral on whether this would suit him, but people have been barracking the manager for it in some quarters.

Looking for a fresh mentality from the lads, forget the league for now, shackles off and try to play with some freedom, rather than with the weight of the world on their shoulders. Could be the turning point we're all hoping for, as the post near the top suggests.

I'd like to see this

       Robles
Hibbert jags Distin garbutt
         Baines Barkley
Mirallas                  Oviedo

               Eto
              Kone

String team, with the likes of stones, McCarthy, Naismith and Coleman rested for the city game

Strong team?! A left back in midfield, a left back at left wing, distin and hibbert as well? A team with 3 left backs, a right back that can't get up with play as we need would be like Robertos last two teams, asking for a defeat.

Get back to the system we know. McCarthy is likely to be out but stones back so get our best back 4 out to give our best chance of a clean sheet, Coleman stones jags Baines. Have Barry and besic in front of them, 2 actual central midfielders. And have at least 2 of Barkley, Naismith and mirallas off Lukaku or kone probably Lukaku because 3 games in a week would be a lot for kone in my opinion.

We can't go into this game with that weak a team playing people out of position. If he played that team and we lost he would rightly get pelters and I think it would push a lot of people over the edge from being concerned but wanting to back him and get it right to thinking he has lost the plot completely and feel his time is coming to an end.

We need a strong team and a performance that can get us believing we aren't in free fall and there is light at the end of the tunnel. And that's ignoring the fact the FA Cup is our best chance at this season not being a complete disaster. Strongest team possible please and hopefully a confidence boosting win ahead of city.

Think that's a strong team myself with only one player being out of position in Baines. Oviedo can play left mid, no matter how many times you try to tell people that he can't, and would offer energy, natural width and a directness that we've been lacking from the left all season.

Hibbert has been sound this season and got motm this season against west ham. I don't think playing hibbert would weaken us that much, Infact it may well strengthen us defensively.

It's all well and good saying play our best team, but we've got man city at the weekend and that has to take priority. We lose that and we could find ourselves 1 point off the bottom 3. No point in risking McCarthy or stones (our 2 most important players IMO) only for then to get injured and miss the city game.

That team is good enough to beat west ham and could give the opportunity for the likes of garbutt, Kone and Oviedo to stake a serious claim. I'd rather that than just sticking with the under performers and playing players who are half fit. Take them out the firing line, let McCarthy and stones get fully fit so we go into what is a massive game on Saturday with what could be our strongest 11 for the first time this season.

The city game has to take priority.

The city game has to take priority.

But when we are in this awful run of form we can't afford to take our eye off any game and focus on the one after it. Can you imagine if its another inept performance we lost 2-0 don't look threatening and plays only half of our main team? We have a better chance against man city if we have beaten west ham and take a bit of confidence from it along with the crowd a bit more relaxed after a positive result.

As for Oviedo of course he can play there but it's not his position is it? He has played there about 4 times for us. It's like saying Coleman can play right wing because he can do a job there but you wouldn't pick out of choice. Hibbert has been ok, this season, I actually think he is still injured so its irrelevant, however the problem comes if he is in a weakened team you can carry a couple of players when things are going well but when we are lacking ideas and have a mixed up team like the one you put in you then start to notice what he doesn't do. Distin has been awful, if stones is ok he plays. If he isn't then it's a different story.

I completely get we have a really hard league game against city at the weekend. And if we got a few knocks and were tired from this, and as a result lost that game it would be annoying. The only thing worse than that would be playing half a team and the rest backup players tomorrow, losing against west ham looking poor again and then still losing to man city at the weekend regardless.

We need to win this by any means. I get the argument to concentrate on the Man City game but we don't want to go into it on the back of five straight defeats. Even a stuttering draw wouldn't do much for confidence.

I actually think we'll spank West Ham tomorrow. In all my years of following the Blues, we are best when our backs are against the wall as it surely is now. This will be followed by a draw with City and the tide will turn for us.
Managing expectations has always been our problem, especially from within the shadow of the shite, who always seem to manage to keep ahead of us, even when the odds look like it being our turn to beat them.

Bottom line.. the Old Lady has a special charm under the lights... we will beat WH.. COYB!!!!!!

Absolutely no idea who is injured, half injured, semi injured or not injured yet.

Play a pretty strong team but if key players like McCarthy and Stones are doubts and require a late fitness test then I would rather they rested so they are in a better condition to face Man City than likely risk a recurrence of an injury caused by Kevin Nolan the Cunt.

Updated squad news:

- Stones is fit after missing the last two matches with the ankle knock he received against Stoke, as is Mirallas after being withdrawn at half time against Hull.
- McCarthy's hamstring is still causing him issues, so he is missing the match tomorrow. Pienaar, Hibbert, Gibson Howard and Osman are the other injured absentees.
- Atsu has joined up with the Ghanaian national team ahead of the African Cup of Nations.

Hardly surprising, a shitty January night for an FA Cup third round game. There will be plenty like me that would have come down at the weekend had it been on then rather than tonight.

City game at the weekend is sold out though and the derby isn't far from it either.

Looking back over the last few years the League Cup and FA Cup attendances have been pretty low often not even getting 30,000 and that's for Saturday games. As you say current form won't help plus the time of year, weather can be a factor and the fact it's on a Tuesday all go against getting a decent crowd.

We've still got a decent support, I think we've sold out 5 or 6 this season plus the next couple of Saturday games will sell out as well. We'll probably do well to get 25,000 tonight and I can't see there being a big travelling support for this one either but it's not at all surprising given all the circumstances.

I'd rather lose than draw.  Fuck having to sandwich another midweek game in before starting a murderer's row of Europa and Prem fixtures with a half-fit squad.

Go balls-out for the win.  A draw is simply unacceptable!

Love the shouts for playing Baines at CM (where he belongs) and Oviedo at left wing (where he belongs more than the other options we've trotted out there).

Hoping I can leave work in time to see this one live with NSNO crew.  Set the DVR just in case.  COYB!

Apparently we had only sold about 20,000 by the end of last week. If its on a Saturday you guarantee 3,000 from west ham possibly pushing to 6,000 whereas I guess tonight they would bring 1500. That's 4 or 5k from their side and if we get 2k more for it being a Saturday that is approaching 30k which isn't too bad.

i've been getting the feeling that oviedo to LM is a perm move. Think he's probably played more further up field than he has at FB.

He has hardly started any games there though normally it is coming in from the bench. And it's also because you are never going to chose him over Baines unless he is injured and with garbutt coming through he is being pushed to third choice left back.

I'm not a fan of full backs playing on the wing in general. It's completely different position when you are arriving later or when there is one defender/midfielder against you when you are often moving onto a ball, compared to being the one that is expected to make something happen often with a full back and midfielder against you. Coleman did well there for a bit but after his confidence dropped a bit from some bad games you could see he had no idea how to cope with the responsibility of making things happen from that role with two people up against him. He is great at running on to a ball and running at people but from a standing start against 2 people less so.

Oviedo isn't great at beating players, he doesn't have the link play of a pienaar, he isn't rapid so can't just run past players. He is a decent footballer so can do a job, but in his games at full back and few games played left midfield I've not seen anything that makes me think he is a good option there as a regular starter unless we have no other options.

Which should mean more at Goodison really seeing as Owen will probably be boring the fuck out of everyone on the commentary!

Have to agree with @TheRam (http://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=1602) with his Hibbert shout. Coleman has been below par since his return and Hibbert was excellent against West Ham in the league. When you've got those brutes punting it up at every opportunity you need someone who can fill in centrally to win the headers - Hibbo can do that.

I just hope there's a performance from the lads tonight, I've forgotten what it's like to be confident.

City game has to take priority though. If we lose that then we're right in a relegation scrap whether we like it or not. I'd happily go out of the FA Cup to be honest as daft as it sounds. But it's important we play well and if we do - we win.

Would like to see Eto'o leading the line. Sick of seeing him out of position.

Goodison under the lights, the rumbles of the home crowd booing - bet the players can't wait.

                 Robles

Hibbert - Jags - Distin - Garbutt
               Besic
         Barkley Barry
Mirallas              Oviedo
              Eto'o

FS1 games means they should also be streaming in the USA on FoxSports Go.

Oops, missed the edit.  FoxSports Go should be streaming it, without malware!

I like Oviedo on the wing because he can at least pass and shoot.  Better than nothing, especially better than wasting Barkley or Eto'o.

Hibbert is injured definitely out of tonight. Even if he wasnt, couldn't condone the Coleman out shout! He has been poor going forward but I actually thought first half against hull he seemed a bit more lively so I think another game and hopefully good performance might get him back on track.

With the wider point i know what you mean about not a priority and not getting dragged into a relegation battle is key. However we are playing tha badly people are so down I just don't think another defeat tonight playing badly can happen it would tip a lot of people over the edge. Plus I think after such a disappointing season we need all the hope we can get by way of a chance in the cup!

Everton on the ropes at Goodison Park. Carl Jenkinson's right-wing cross is flicked towards goal by Matt Jarvis, but it is easy for Joel Robles. The hosts look like a side short on confidence. (BBC)

Why? Defending high balls is West Ham's bread and butter.

There's always a second chance from a knock down or a poor clearance, we won't score passing it around the centre circle, especially as it generally ends up back at the defenders.

Bit better the last few minutes anyway, some signs that Martinez may be willing to mix it up a little.

Jagielka looks like stones away at Newcastle when he got twatted and was seeing double

Barkley looks lively but mirallas very quiet
Lukaku sharp and Barry more like himself

Why does sweat have to mean he's knackered rather than it being because he's putting some effort into the game. It annoys me when people try to guess fitness of players just by looking at the match. Also some people just sweat more.

Coleman was looking for someone to come for the ball and no one mate them selves avaliable

I know. I haven't got a problem with going back to the keeper to build another attack, but going back to him for him to lump it forward and give possession back is lazy and the easy option.  Coleman may as well have just kicked it out for a thtow in.

don't think distin has done much wrong in the first half. seemed everywhere in defence. jags is the culprit.

Yeah he's got better as it progressed but then Jags was regressing, they look at accident waiting to happen at the moment.

Why does sweat have to mean he's knackered rather than it being because he's putting some effort into the game. It annoys me when people try to guess fitness of players just by looking at the match. Also some people just sweat more.

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear - I agree with you.  Don't think he's knackered at all.  His movement is fine, which indicates he's not tired.  He just works hard, and always sweats a lot and breathes hard.  Just who he is.  If anything, belies the "lazy" smears that occasionally get spouted.

Jags and Distin must do a pre match coin toss to see who's turn it is to have a mare. Every week its one or the other.

On the first half performance it looks like we might score one or two, however, it also looks like we might let in one or two. Pro analysis.

Considering our form going into this game, I think we've done ok, we've had some good opportunities and the players look like they are desperate to turn things around but lack that extra bit of confidence to make things flow smoothly. In a strange way I'm glad we are not leading 1-0 just yet considering how awful we have been recently in defending winning leads. It means that if we were to score first in the second half then obviously West Ham have less time to bounce back.

Positives - Lukaku has caused quite a few problems tonight for West Ham, if he continues much the same in the second half then he is due a goal. Barry hasn't been too bad either, in fact he had a chance to score. Naismith has been battling hard, I'd love to see a bit more of his tenacity rub off on some of the players.

Negatives - Our defence is due to concede another sloppy goal again very soon, Jags has reverted back to his early season form which is a real shame. Didn't really want to hear the crowd boo when the ball from our corner was passed back to Robles despite the fact it is annoying - just accept in the meantime that we are shit at taking corners and hope we can score from open play.

I think Naismith has been ineffective. AGain. Telegraphs his passes to fuck.

Yep, battled manfully as always and good in the air, but some woeful decision making and execution of passes that would have seen other members of the squad roundly slaughtered.

verton 0-1 West Ham

Roberto Martinez appears a very worried man on the touchline - and so he should be.
The Toffees have won only one of the last nine matches and things don't look to be getting any better. How he could do with an equaliser in the last 20 minutes.

We can build from this.  It won't cost us further erosion in the League table, or bump us from Europa play.  If we duplicate this effort and tighten up our CB play, we can still have a successful run in both.

Not today we're not

We haven't been great have we?  We've looked for the most part like the away team, against West Ham.

We might have had a few more shots than in recent games, but that's not saying much.

I'm seeing lots of defensive errors, a lack of focus, lack of creativity and a lack of steel.

It might be an improvement over recent weeks, but we are still playing like shit imo.

Needed a stand out performance, and got it from Rom. He was head and shoulders above everyone else.

We need more to start playing though, I hope Bob can start getting the flow in the team going again.  There's no reason we should be playing with so much fear, and so little coordination with each other.

Also hope Rom can take that performance into Saturday, and beyond. No fucking use seeing flashes of that.

Tonight was an upwards curve, but it's more important how we continue from this. Our shit still isn't together.

Rom. WOW!! Oviedo, Mirallis were also playing well. Always looking to go forward. Barkley looked decent.

My overall impression though is weird. I thought we had times where we looked really good, but you could still see that we weren't playing as a group, and as a team. Our back also has to get things in order.

But, When most things aren't going your way you have to find a way, and they did. I saw more heart, more hustle, and more character out there tonight then before which is a very big positive. That is why that goal went in. They bloody worked hard for it.

Thought for a lot of that game we saw the Rom from last year, he terrorised WestHam at times there and took his goal superbly well. And as an added bonus managed to boot that whinging, diving, horrible twat Cresswell in the mush. We looked better playing the ball quicker more direct and I thought this helped Romelu, shouts for Besic and Oviedo who played well as well. Can we add Cresswell to the Westham twat list please.

Deserved nothing less out of that. It was far from perfect and we're still very iffy at the back but we played better, with more pace and more energy than we have for a long time. Looks like Martinez is willing to mix a little as well and not be quite as ridged with his passing game. For all we still looked a bit short on confidence we never really looked out of it.

Be fucked with these threads though, they get worse by the week with people only appearing to moan and giving up after 60 minutes, and David James can fuck off with his stupid fucking hairdo as well.

Something that stood out markedly tonight was when a chance didn't go West Ham's way their players were smiling and brushing it off, ours were like you'd just run over their dog.  That's how lacking in confidence we are.  We need the footballing version of Zanex or something to lift us up, like when Donovan came in and raised everyone's game.

A draw seems a very fair result and I'm glad it was Lukaku who scored - he very much deserved it for the shift he put in and we had a good chance to get the winner at the very end.

Ok it wasn't quite a win but there were a lot of positives to take from that game:

1. Lukaku's performance - maybe being dropped to the bench 2 games in a row had an impact.
2. Robles looked quite competent.
3. Players looked up for it despite being low on confidence, even when we were 1-0 down we eventually got our act together.
4. Oviedo also did pretty well and shows he can deliver a good cross into the box.
5. The ref was shit but I think that might have helped galvanise the team a bit considering some of the injustices.
6. On the whole I thought we defended a little better than in recent games, I know some of the players still made errors and we conceded but when you have to defend 15 corners then it was always going to be tricky.
7. Last minute equaliser will have given a confidence boost.
8. We mixed up our style a little bit more, perhaps Martinez is becoming a bit more flexible in this department.

Yes some of the turns with the ball tonight were breathtaking, dare I say it he looked like a £28m forward tonight.

I thought there was quite a lot to be happy about, the determination from all was there even if the performances were not always. Lukaku, Oviedo and to lesser extents Robles and Barkley showed signs of improvement and Martinez actually changed the game with his Mc Geady sub (luck rather than judgment perhaps but still). Fuckers gone and given me some hope we won't get totally fucking mauled by City now.

Didn't think Oviedo did that well, personally. Jenkinson did him a couple of times, he let numerous crosses over from his side largely unchallenged, and thought he was jittery and sometimes wasteful in the final third.

All opinions anyway...

I think this was his first game at left back in about a year. If he was to get a good run in this position, he would become stronger again, problem for him is Baines doesn't get a serious injury very often haha.

Definitely an offense-minded LB, or a left-winger who can make a good defensive challenge.  Not a classic defender.

I am now convinced that "pundits" and commentators just like the sound of their own voices - anyone listening to and not watching the stream I had on would of been under the impression that WH battered us and were so unlucky, kept saying "WH are controlling the game" and with 89 on the clock he said "as easier win away form home WH could ever hope for"

Reality is Everton were not at their best, but they plugged away, had a good goal ruled out, had Naismith blown for a foul when it wasn't and he was away, and WH actually rarely threatened our goal despite 17 corners?

Well played lads, maybe somebody taller on the near post defending corners next time, but the media can do one with their cliches and bandwagons.

Thought Oviedo was decent, looked pretty good going forward and put in a couple of cracking challenges at the back. The only concern was a couple of times at corners he charged out doing a bit of ball chasing and left the left back position exposed.

Quite something that a draw at home to West Ham is something that we're celebrating though. But we need to use it to gain confidence from. Work hard, and good things will come. I think this season, we have been too complacent and not worked for our results. Today proves we can.

We hardly had a lot of clear goal-scoring chances though.

Not a huge amount but certainly much better compared to previous weeks, the decision making from players like Barkley still needs to improve a bit, maybe try a cross instead of looking to make a pass from an extremely difficult position.

I just hope Lukaku can keep that momentum going.

I don't think any Toffee fan would say that's the way they want the team to play. BUT, it's better then before, there was an actually effort out there(especially after we conceded), and when everything was going agaisnt us we still managed to equalize. Some players that were playing poorly looked much better as well.

We are not going to come out of a tailspin in one game. It's probably going to take 3-5 games.

It's not Martinez's fault that Distin couldn't be fucked to follow the biggest bastard on their team as he ran for the near post!

When he went off Martinez was talking to him and Distin didn't break stride or make eye contact. I think - as the rumours suggest - something's happened between them and Distin's not playing for the manager anymore, hence his frequent absences.

Aye something has definitely gone on there between those two. Wasn't just the goal that we looked shaky from though and in my eyes it is the overriding problem in our team for which the manager has to take the most responsibility for. I think Distin should apologise to the manager for accusing him of 'not knowing what he's doing defensively' if this is indeed what he said. It's not the players' place to make such accusations. Instead of blaming the manager he should look at his own performances, which have been poor all season.

Come on you fucking blues, bring on the rest of the season.

ERM, calm down you lot, yes it loked better slightly but lose gagainst City and we're more than back to square one.

I hope he makes it tight against them and don't try out playing them. Otherwise he's playing with our survival. Don't want to sour our draw tonight but concerned he doesn't want to employ direct and combative tactics to get us out of this mess.

Doesn't help for overseas posters unfortunately, unless they have a UK proxy.

Where where you in the ground Simon Paul to say we were shit for 89 minutes? What a gross distortion of the game. We played quite well in the first half and might have gone in ahead. Lukaku was immense throughout the game and unlucky not to score more than one. Excellent displays by Oviedo and Besic. Perhaps you were in an obstructed seat? Either that or you are as blind as a bat.

Tbf Gabbidon was good until he got injured. Used to watch him a lot. He had Del Piero in his area pocket when Wales beat Italy in 2001/2

He looked a really good player in the making back then but never quite hit the heights.

rescued our season that goal though

Funnily enough that's a pretty good summation of how I feel about the game, which probably doesn't quite reflect how it exactly panned out.

Injury robbed him of his pace. His decision making and reading of the game was always top notch. Always felt he could've done better than West Ham.

This is only decent if we take it on, get twatted by city, lose the replay then it was pointless

I really really hope that's a season changing goal

This is a good point to make.  But more important than beating City or getting through to the fourth Cup round is ENDING THIS HORRIBLE SKID we're on.

Look, I think it's pretty obvious that there is no way back to challenge for Top 6 from here.  We're probably going to take a financial hit from finishing, I would predict, around 9/10th compared to what our expectations were.

But winning certain football matches matter.  I want to see us go deep, deep into the final rounds of the Europa and defeat BOTH Manu and the shite at home.  We all do.  All three of these goals are completely realistic.

Plenty of opportunity to enjoy the rest of this season... so COYB and let's do it.

I was only saying to play Hibbert to give Coleman a rest from the team to be more fresh for City, rather than drop him as such.

Thought Coleman played a lot better tonight. The defence just looks a lot more solid without Alcaraz in it.

Everton weren't shit for 89 minutes you fool, they played pretty well for most of the game considering their overall form and confidence at the moment. I agree that this should be the turning point though and I think it will.
Hail Lukaku MotM!!

West Ham walked through us several times

Jags was mistake after mistake

Barry likewise

And that punch from Joel near the end? Jesus!

We got a late goal though so it's all good

I was in the street end by the way

there were positives tonight, halting a run of defeats, lukaku looked very good, i thought oviedo had a decent game and with a run will come good, i like besic and would like to see him with mcarthy as i dont think barry is a help at the moment, there were times in the last 20 odd minutes off the first half i thought we looked like getting back to our best and we actually attacked with some pace and looked dangerous, and then we start the second half on the back foot and back to our slow ponderous self, would love to know whats said at half time. oh and i thought robles looked a little better.

We fought hard, didn't give up, created chances and rescued it at the death with a goal from a very young striker with a big price tag so that will have given him a boost.

That result (yes - even a draw) can be used as a springboard to other things. It's up to us how well we use that springboard...

We weren't great but at least we showed some invention up front and at last some fight, was getting sick and tired of us getting bullied out of games all the time. The positives, Lukaku's best game of the season, superb last night, Besic also excellent, Oviedo shone. Agree with Jags and Barry though.

Get the fucking fuck in there you fucking fucks

Zoolander.... Thank you for that comment mate. I was on the verge of suicide before we scored and when I saw that comment and the others... I nearly pissed me pants and at 52, that's not good... Made up we came back from the death.
I also agree that this was like the Oxford game with Inchy's goal at the death.... I hope the outcome is the same too and we now march onward Evertonians!!!!!
