West Ham United v Everton FC
The Boleyn Ground
Tuesday 13th January 19:45
FA Cup 3rd Round Replay

West Ham - Last Five Matches

Chelsea 2-0 West Ham
West Ham 1-2 Arsenal (Kouyate)
West Brom 1-1 West Ham (Sakho)
Everton 1-1 West Ham - FA Cup (Collins)
Swansea 1-1 West Ham (Carroll)

Everton - Last Five Matches

Everton 0-1 Stoke City
Newcastle 3-2 Everton (Kone, Mirallas)
Hull City 2-0 Everton
Everton 1-1 West Ham - FA Cup (Lukaku)
Everton 1-1 Man City (Naismith)

West Ham United

West Ham will probably go into this match with the lesser confidence having surrendered leads in each of their last two matches, including the late Romelu Lukaku equaliser in the original tie. However, the Hammers have home advantage in this one and only three teams (Tottenham, Southampton & Arsenal) have managed to bag all three points from Upton Park, and they've only lost one of their last 8 matches at home (W6 D1). West Ham United will be with their three African players for this match but for different reasons. Diafra Sakho pulled out of international duty having injured his back, with the Senegalese FA making attempts to prevent the player from playing for West Ham for the length of the African Cup of Nations he is going to miss. Alex Song retired from international football in the week but is likely to miss out through illness whilst Cheikhou Kouyate has actually gone to the African Cup of Nations.

Everton

Despite a quick comeback to earn a draw against Manchester City, Everton picked up an unwanted record at the weekend. Fernandinho's goal meant Everton had failed to keep a clean sheet for 11 matches in a row and this is the joint longest streak this season alongside Stoke City. Their form away in the league doesn't fill Everton with much confidence either as the Toffees have lost 6 of their 11 league matches on the road this season after only losing 5 away matches for the entire league campaign in the 2013-14 season. Everton's haven't won in their last 6 matches in all competitions which is the longest run without a win of any Premier league side. Everton have several injuries going into this match with none likely to be available until the next round of Premier League matches whilst Christian Atsu is the only player on international duty.

It's interesting to see the difference between the PL results and FA cup tie results. It would also seem stopping Downing prevents them scoring anything.

We take a bit of momentum into this, with regard to the tie that is, and if we can keep taking steps forward then surely this is winnable. There's been a change in attitude lately that should give reason to be a little more optimistic and hopeful. Man to man we're loads better than West Ham, we just have to keep moving forward.

Yeah?

What a stupid thing to say. Footballers get to know and respect each other pretty well. To them it's like losing a very good friend or relation.

I'm sure this was a terrible, poorly judged attempt at a joke as someone has suggested.

Anyway, I'm pleased with how sharp Kone has looked and he seems to be the sort of player who benefits from game time so I won't be disappointed if he starts - I still think we can get a result here.

For the first time in a long time I am also quite confident if we're involved in a penalty shootout - a lot of tidy ballplayers these days.

Anyway,back to the game.

Heading up to London after work on the train tonight, crashing in a hostel, then meeting my mate who's from East London for Pie & Mash on Tuesday afternoon then off the game. So it better be worth it  :snigger: West Ham is one of my favourite away days.

I've took a day off work so REALLY hope its worth it and that we win. Been to Upton Park 6 times, and won ALL 6. So COYB lets make it 7 tomorrow then steamroller past Bristol/Donny into round 5  A win here could really re-start our season  nod

Kone plays better up front on his own and when where away from home, plus Rommy is probably going to be on compassionate leave.   :smug: There's players in this line up who can definetly get us a few goals, I just hope Roberto Martinez doesnt repeat the 3-5-2 we played at Hull without any sign of practice in training  :(

              Joel
Coleman Stones Jags Baines

        Besic  Barkley

  McGeady     Naismith  Mirallas

              Kone

2-1 Everton win. :)

It's the kind of thing the commentators would bring up about 5 times if it was Newcastle. We sell out every away game yet it's hardly mentioned that we always travel in numbers....Newcastle probable sell out around 60% of their away allocations yet are constantly praised for 'always' bringing large numbers every match...bullshit.

The original 3,000 didn't get past STH's so unless there's 1000 STH's travelling upto goodison every home game I doubt ESCLA will have that many. Plus the fact it was too late for tickets to be posted out and had to be collected from goodison means it's likely the vast majority of the 3500 are locals.

My cable channel guide isn't updated, and doesn't list ANY of the Tuesday FA cup ties on ANY of the FoxSports channels (FS1, FS2, FoxSoccer Plus).  There are 4 matches in the time window, so we almost certainly will have coverage of some varietal.  PROBABLY FS1, but damnit, I will be stuck at work and need to know what to record.

There is an "English pub" in downtown Raleigh, presumably I could go there after my 1:30 meeting and pray they are showing it.  They claim to show all the Prem matches every week.

Big Sam says he's 'more flexible' tactically than Martinez.

I guess he's referring to his ability to switch seamlessly from long ball to really long ball football.

Quote
Romelu Lukaku has declared himself available for Everton’s FA Cup replay at West Ham United despite mourning the death of a close friend Junior Malanda, the Wolfsburg midfielder who was killed in a car accident on Saturday.

Police in Germany have opened a manslaughter investigation after Malanda, a 20-year-old Belgium youth international, was killed in a speeding car that skidded off the road in wet conditions en route to Hanover and overturned several times. Two other people in the car were injured but have since been released from hospital, including Anderlecht youth team defender Anthony D’Alberto, but Malanda, who was travelling in the back and not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Bielefeld police said on Monday that the vehicle was travelling “at a speed unsuitable for the weather conditions” and that a manslaughter investigation has begun.

Lukaku joined widespread tributes to the midfielder on Saturday having received the news following Everton’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City. The Everton forward has been close to Malanda since their time together in the Anderlecht youth team. The pair lived in the same Brussels neighbourhood and their mothers are also close friends.

Despite his devastation, the Belgium international trained as normal on Sunday and has told Roberto Martínez he wishes to play in ’s third-round replay at Upton Park. “It was an incredible shock for Rom and for everyone,” the Everton manager said.

“We all knew Rom had that relationship with Junior because it was a talking point when we played Wolfsburg in the Europa League, the two of them facing each other. We found out straight after the Man City game. It was such incredible news that it has been tough. Rom has been really affected. Everyone has, to be honest, as we only played them in November.

“It is so sad it is difficult to comprehend. Rom is really down about it. He is in constant contact with the family but he has been very strong over it. Playing football probably allows you to get rid of that feeling and that’s exactly what he needs. He trained well yesterday and we are all helping and supporting him.”

The Everton winger Kevin Mirallas also knew Malanda from the Belgium international set-up and both he and Lukaku view the West Ham tie as a release from the situation. Martínez said: “They are such a footballing family. It makes you appreciate not to take anything for granted in life.Rom is a very sensitive man and he had always been giving Junior good advice. Junior was just breaking into the senior side with Belgium and you can imagine their group is very strong, Kevin was very close to him too. Their feeling is they want to play football and show their respect on the pitch as well.”

Lukaku earned Everton the replay with a 91st-minute equaliser at Goodison Park last week, the fourth game in succession he has scored against West Ham, and has been instrumental in the tentative recovery made by Martínez’s side in their past two outings.

“Rom has shown strong responsibility since the start of the season,” Martínez said. “He wasn’t fully fit after the World Cup but he always wanted to be out on the pitch. Fully fit, he is one of the best strikers in world football. It’s been pleasing to see how effective he has been in the last two games.”

Everton have won only one of their past 11 games and are without a victory in six but Leighton Baines, who delivered his 45th Premier League assist for Steven Naismith’s goal against City on Saturday, a record for a defender, believes Lukaku’s goal against Sam Allardyce’s side has transformed the mood.

The left-back said: “The optimism we have has come from scoring that goal against West Ham. If we don’t score that goal, there is a different feeling. That goal has kept us bobbing along. If we can get a good win at West Ham, it changes everything. There is pressure on the games and that is of our own doing. We were never in that position last season at any point, or the year before. We are not in the real depths at the moment but that loss of form, the bad results – the majority of the squad have been there before and know what is required to turn it round.”

Finally feel confident about a game for the first time in months. Think we'll win this by a couple of goals and hopefully start a good run of form before the derby. I would like to see this team:
                     Joel
Coleman Stones Jagielka Baines
              Barkley Besic
Mirallas      Naismith      Oviedo
                  Lukaku

But I think Barry will be in instead of Oviedo with Barkley or Naismith on the left.

It goes to penalties tonight if it's another draw, dosent it? I'm not sure I can cope with that. We want a win tonight big time and I don't care how we get it. We need to get the winning mentality and momentum back we had last season. I don't think this will be an easy game personally.

I would like it to be finished in 90 mins, but at least the next league game (West Brom) is on Monday, so if it does go to extra time the team have plenty of time to recover.

I would like to see this team:
                     Joel
Coleman Stones Jagielka Baines
              Barkley Besic
Mirallas      Naismith      Oviedo
                  Lukaku

But I think Barry will be in instead of Oviedo with Barkley or Naismith on the left.

I think you're right, although I'm not sure about Mirallas given that Martinez has said that he's still trying to overcome an ankle injury. We might have to put up with McGeady again on the wing or otherwise maybe Oviedo.

There will be loads of flash links, there will also be a BT Sports Acestream feed available in high quality.

Cheers for any help.

lol well Acestream is a bit of streaming software, that you preinstall on your PC (like a media player). Then you open the acestream link in the player and watch. Sometimes a little bit of setup is required to get it working perfectly, but they have feeds of Sky Sports and BT Sports, and well known streamers like BZ who stream in very high quality - it's like having HD on your TV. For the top end streams you need good internet and a decent spec PC.

Flash streams are just browser videos like you get everywhere, you'll already have flash installed so just need a list of links.

http://www.livefootballol.com/streaming/english-fa-cup/13-01-2015-west-ham-united-everton.html (http://www.livefootballol.com/streaming/english-fa-cup/13-01-2015-west-ham-united-everton.html)

has several Acestream links, and a few flash links. More should show up later on there too.

Or you can get more flash links here:

There is another really good one that has a big list and some surprisingly high quality flash links, but it keeps showing a malware warning in my browser at the moment so I won't post it.

There's loads of sites about in general, googling the game and 'live stream' should find whatever you need. Make sure you have an adblocker though. ;D

Pretty even in the first half but at least we look more confident when playing, some of our more direct play has helped Lukaku and he's even been able to hold the ball up to let others get forward. McGeady has not done too badly either, been a real spark in attack.

Despite having a couple of efforts, it is difficult to see how we are going to break the West Ham defence down, they are pretty much one step ahead of our attackers - maybe Tomkins to have a cock-up. Meanwhile we need to keep things tight at the back, West Ham still able to get forward easily and Stones got away with his error. But Joel seems to be a more confident presence.

We've played ok overall.

Started bright but failed to take any control of the game. Just need to use the ball better in dangerous areas

Really think we miss a fit Piennar. Someone who can hang on to the ball for a bit in the final third, draw a foul, find a pass and link in with Baines/Barkley.  Hope we see Miralles at least in the second half.

Agree - what's happene to him?

Decent first half, still lacking in sharpness at times and could do with Barkley waking up but Jags and Stones have done well against Carroll and Robles looking comfortable and made a good save.

Mcgeady looking lively as well.

Much more like it there. Best 45 mins I've seen us play in ages. Just need to get ahead now. Think McGeady has been decent for once, looks like our most likely scorer.

Why do BT insist on employing utter cunts? McManaman is wearing a skull neckerchief ffs. What a twat.

And to be fair the ref hasn't been bad either (touchwood) - Naismith's effort to keep the ball in play at the opposing end, I was sure that was out for a goalkick until I saw the replay.

I'd like to see barkley do more and McGeady take some more shots. Also would like to see Coleman deliver a cross first or second touch rather than take it to the by line every time.

I think we need more composure and skills from the centre. Our tempo slows down a lot when we pass to the centre as we end up taking up too much time there or end up selecting the wrong pass.

looked like Nolan was telling the linesman to watch the line and pointing out Naismith was offside

Naismith said something along the lines of "I'm going to move you knob"

If you're relying on your last man to make a goal-saving tackle, you've failed as a team.

The centrebacks were left two on two as the whole team in front of them switched off. Not their fault.

GOAL
West Ham 1-2 Everton - Romelu Lukaku

Ten-man Everton are ahead! Kevin Mirallas runs rings round the West Ham defence before sending in a low ball for Romelu Lukaku to poke home from point blank range. It's a terrific comeback by the Toffees.

That's three games in a row we've come from behind as well, something we didn't look like ever doing for a while.

Did you see the way that arrogant fucker Adrian threw his gloves off behind him AS he was taking his run up for the penalty.

The gamesmanship he was allowed to get away with in that whole shoot-out was just like the Dutch keeper in the World Cup.

All we can hope, is that this really forges a siege mentally in the dressing room, that really makes us step up(manager especially), make the top six, and win the Europa League.

Such a gutting end after a heroic display, especially after McGeady was sent off. Robles was great tonight, as were the rest of the players, but I cannot understand his thinking with his penalty.

The shoots of recovery are certainly there though and, providing we get an early goal against what will be a horrendously defensive West Brom next Monday, I can see us getting that victory we desperately crave.

This is the most gutted I've felt for ages. It always feels worse when you so clearly deserve to get something.

We were much better tonight, can't do anything once it goes to pens, but wasn't happy at all with their equaliser.

More positives than anything though.
Robles was fantastic. Hope we start to see the best of him now he's had a run. Barry was excellent, looked like his last season's self. Mirallas and Lukaku were outstanding. No one had a bad game in that second half and other than that fucking corner we defended brilliantly. Oviedo was a good addition as well, he's a very clever footballer.

I just pray to God that they take confidence from that performance.

We need better than McGeady and Barkley really needs to pull his finger out, it looked as though he didn't even bother to try as soon as he saw he was coming off. Not good enough that.

West Brom is a fucking massive game, my arse is going for it already.

One plus point to come out of tonite is I think the diamond in midfield that was forced on us, suited us really well, and with 11 men we could have 2 up front using it.
Martinez still got lots of questions to answer for me though as I dont think we'd have got the performance we did from 11 men, but thats an arguement for another day

Ross can't seem to get into the games at the minute. Gives away the ball far too often. Thought Roberto should have taken off Barry rather than Besic at the time, but getting the draw was good from the position we were in. Stupidity out of Mcgeady though. Jesus Christ the shite you see spouted on here. Yes McGeady was stupid to get sent off but pay attention to the game, he wasn't playing badly at all tonight, he was giving us an option out wide which despite how average he is, we do need.

And as for slating Robles for his pens - just try and take some fucking positives for once, he was great tonight and saved a pen to keep us in it. At the end of the day we missed 2 pens which is usually enough to get beat anyway, luckily the others all scored to keep the pressure on.

Think we have our team back. Every player who took a pen gets a 10. Robles gets the key to the blue half of the city and a kiss from Lizz.

Fuckin boss match that. Europa Leagues ours.

Ross can't seem to get into the games at the minute. Gives away the ball far too often. Thought Roberto should have taken off Barry rather than Besic at the time, but getting the draw was good from the position we were in. Stupidity out of Mcgeady though. Not much contact though, but idiotic all the same. Thought they should have got a few more yellow cards too. How many fouls had Carroll without a card.

Yeah, they were pretty much allowed to do what the fuck they liked.

Amalfitano's push on Baines was a disgrace.

Horrible club, horrible players, horrible fans, horrible place, big-faced manager.

Joel can always work on his penalties. He was superb tonight. At 1-0 down when he made that save I honestly thought he'd won us the tie. Confidence is the key to being a keeper. The boys have got a week now to lick their wounds and look at the positives. We can build on this now I think. Macca back will be a big plus

Completely different mentality from the players and there's definitely a bit of a buzz going on as well. All credit to the fans that went as well and a great reception for the players at the end, they aren't worrying about relegation and can see we're turning a corner. Onwards and upwards Blues. :)

It's been the shittiest season in recent times in terms of our domestic cup runs.

But at least we have past the run of 2 fixtures per week so players nursing any injuries have more time to recover properly and Martinez can use the free week in a fortnight's time either for team bonding activities or maybe organise a friendly against another team to try out some of the fringe players and a different formation.

I would have voted Joel if I hadn't watched the PKs.  You could argue that PKs aren't real footy and should not count in one's evaluation, but I'm a dumb American and I can't unsee 'em.

Amalfitano sure as fuck should get a retroactive red.  What a cunt, on a team that already has Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll.  If there were any chance in a million that Karma were real or that there were really a just and merciful God, he would have missed his pen and we would be through to the 4th round.

Well, at least I now know what it feels like to feel simultaneously proud from the bottom of my heart and like someone kicked me square in the balls.

Gutted about that. Proper fa cup tie. Robles played his best game for Everton so shame it ended like that for him, needs to work on his penalty saving, didn't really get close, but he played a stormer otherwise.

David James is a twat of the first order, I really don't know why he has such a bee in his bonnet about us, most ex reds are usually quite complimentary.

Gutted for the lads, Joel great tonight,
McGeady had a good 1st half, and looked a threat , aleast allowed Coleman to get forward, first booking for me was one of them, took it for the team due to the bad pass(cant remember who it was), stupid going in for the slide for the second,
when is Bobby going to realise Barkley cant play Left Mid, which in turns kills Baines forward runs.

Super Kev should have had a Pen , ref bottled it,
Clearly should have dealt with both Keepers in the shoot out equally, threatening Joel with 2nd Yellow was out of order when Adrian was all over Naismith,

As for David James complete cnut,

That's 3 straight games I've loved the overall effort, but the final score didn't go our way.

I said it after the first tie with West Ham, that it's going to take 3-5 games like this of playing better, but not getting results that we want, to get out of this massive slump we are in. A team can't play so poorly for so long then just start winning. They have to figure it out first, and I'm now much more confident that they have. If we keep this up results that we all want will come very shortly.

He wasn't even close to the vast majority of pens though, and most pens weren't that well taken. It wasn't like they were smashing them into the corners.

Just didn't look like a penalty stopper at all.

I thought Joel was just being a goofy bastard.  Because he IS a goofy bastard.  The shit Adrien was pulling was proper poor sportsmanship, and not a word was said to him.

FS1 showed several slow motion replays of the Super Kev foul, and it was clear that he was in the box for the contact.  Not even close.

It was also clear that Super Kev initiated the contact, and we shouldn't have been given a free kick at all, let alone a pen.

There's really only a few guys who aren't improving over the last 3 games. I thought Jagielka, and Barry improved today. Barry still had his moments, but overall it was a good game from him.

Fair assessment.

I'd be berating Howard for that 1st one so it's only fair to throw some doubts over Robles for it.

Some of his save we're astounding and he commanded his box better than Tim Howard ever has. Even when he punched he got a great connection on it.

Early days to say he should be number one, but Martinez has a big decision to make when Howard comes back

You think pens are a bad way of going out of the cup but it's worse in rugby. If a game is a draw it is decided on the team who scored the most tries. If they are level at that it's the away team. Was watching a local game the other day. Side from Division 6 played at home against a side from Div 1. With two minutes to go the underdogs are 3-0 up. Last minute penalty to Div 1 side takes it to 3-3 and they go through. Heart breaking

I've often wondered about an ice hockey style of penalty where a player has the ball 30 yards out and has 15 seconds or so to put the ball in the net. Would put more emphasis on skill, but might be even more harsh on keepers.

Even for their first goal, for sure it could of "hit him" but the three passes from their 18 yard line to the shot that completely took out 2/3 of our team was not his fault, he is just left to pick up the pieces..... come on, yes the guy has given reason to berate him, but now looks pretty good, he's what we have for now, so support him

Lets not forget we should of won this last week at home, blaming anyone is just not on right now, plenty of positives last 3 games.

I like penalty shootouts. Despite the result, I loved every second of todays. Can't beat the drama.

I saw the match in bits and pieces as I was at work. Even though we were knocked out on penalties, I don't think they players should feel too despondent. Playing with 10 men for most of the match, and still looking the better side for much of it, even taking the lead, goes a long way to proving to themselves they  can do it, and keep working hard, the victory will come. WBA next up, they should have a great deal of confidence to winning this game.

Let's be fair Robles had a very good game and looked the best he's done in an Everton shirt by a country mile, but during the penalties he looked like a rabbit in the headlights and he should have been the keeper that looked unbeatable.

Theres clearly confidence issues with him but who's the goalkeeping coach who's let him retract back into his shell at the end like that?
to be fair to him its one thing being a keeper for pens in a U-21 game but when has he been the keeper in pens in a game of this level of importance where so much was put on him, including being a penalty taker

I just dont think any set of words can prepare a player for that experience; if in the long run he proves himself to be good enough this experience will do him well in the future

i was happy with the performance when we went down to 10 men, but not so happy upto that point west ham were playing poorly and we were so wasteful in the final 3rd and were not good enough to take advantage of our possesion, barkley was very poor up to when he went off and lukaku pretty much anonymous, it took the sending off to spark us into life and the introduction of mirallas made the difference. we are still giving away poor goals and both were down to very slack play. i really thought we would see the game out at 2-1 and progress but like a lot of games this season we never.

It's only a good effort if we go on to beat West Brom unfortunately.

Really not into glorious failure.

No, but but if we went out there and played like we didn't give a fuck your post would have read completely differently.

Hypothetically speaking, perhaps when it was his turn for the pen Robles should have started chipping away at the ref again to get a second yellow, then Mirallas would have stepped up to take the next pen instead and Jags could have taken a turn in goal, heroically denying Adrian...

Perhaps I'm just thinking about this too much this morning!

should never have got to that point should it really.

Liking how martinez is using mirallas at the minute. like he can rely on him to come off the bench and make something happen. excellent impact sub.

He hasn't been fit and been telling them he can't play the whole 90 so it's more a case of them not wanting to risk him from the start than being an impact sub.

However you're right his energy and quality has really lifted us both games the last few days. And that highlights how much we are missing deulofeu or a player of that ilk, or the player we hoped atsu would be. Last season a lot of games we would have one of mirallas or deulofeu to come off the bench in the last 25 mins, a player who would look to get on the ball and take the game to the other team. This season we just haven't had anyone on the bench very often who when you look at the subs you think can't wait until they come on.

Spot on, if we lose or even draw with these, any momentum or confidence we have gained from these last couple of matches will be shot and we'll be back at square one. Big, big game coming up Monday.

Good old-fashioned football match that. Shit result for us but very enjoyable.

Brought back memories of Villa in '77.
