Ron seems to have been a fan of Gerri in pre-season, so might see him replace Mirallas in that lineup. Was hoping he'd play the 2 of them but maybe there is something to the fact that Bobby never played them both together.

Gueye got 90 mins to get to know his new team mates, style of play and manager's tactics - before dominating Spurs in 8 days time.

Easy.

Bit of injury news from the OS.........

However, Koeman is ready to welcome back skipper Jagielka for Saturday's Goodison encounter.

The Blues boss confirmed that the defender is set to feature in the second half against Espanyol in Everton’s final friendly before the season kicks off against Tottenham Hotspur on 13 August.

“Phil will be part of the squad,” revealed Koeman. “Finally he is back and if you lose a period of your pre-season it makes it really tough to come back because it is a really important part of the season. It is in this period where you build your physical level.

“But he will be part of the team in the second half.”

Koeman also provided an update on the other injury concerns within his side.

“Shani Tarashaj is also back fit and will be part of the squad,” he added. “We still have some injuries – Matty Pennington unluckily injured his hamstring in the Real Betis game in Dresden, and still we have Tyias Browning out of the team.

“Darron Gibson is not fit enough to be part of the team but will be able to train next week.”

No I don't think he does. Lots of tackles and interceptions so far but on the ball a bit too much for me. He's small and looks like he gets brushed off/caught on the ball a bit and should be a bit more one touch, two touch, economical style than trying to pick it up and get on it.

Does Gueye look terrible, lads?

No hes winning a lot of ball for us in decent positions. Hes a bit careless in possession at times but hes also attempting to link the play. I think he looks quite good. Definitely needs to take a little more care with the ball though

Are we that poor, Brap?

Easy to play through?

Jittery at the back?

Lacking in craft and creativity?

No pressing?

Unthreatening in attack?

No just look a bit like haphazard and lacking a bit of quality.

An unlucky great strike or good save it's still a miss. Baines very rarely misses penalties. It should be a pretty simple decision to make.

Anyway, we look off the pace. Spurs' group of finely tuned athletes will make mincemeat out of these if we don't come out the blocks a bit quicker next week. Of course it's a friendly but it's the last one before things get real and the only thing we've got to go off in seeing how prepared they are.

Sustained pressure, and a few good passes put Espanyol on the back foot. Ball came loose at the top of the box, we recovered, and the ball was played wide to Gerry. Gerry took on two players, shifted his body weight a few times to put one off balance, and that player stuck out his foot and tripped Gerry as he skated by.

Del's trickery on the right driving at two defenders. Which is what he brings to the party playing from the right. Promising as he might be up top we lose this if he's not on the wing.

I'd agree with that. We look like you'd expect us to look if it was our first pre-season game, a bit disorganised and chaotic.

It ties in with us being behind all summer, in terms of getting the manager in, DoF in, players in etc.

Feels like the first few games might be a bit of a write off, unfortunately.

I'm feeling that based on everything you say and all the matches I've seen in pre-season(even without seeing the game today)

I feel much relies on selling Stones and getting in some real quality and some promising players too; Koulibaly, Carvalho, Draxler, Bony, and Haller would be a good start 😉

'Stale' is a good description. If I were Koeman I'd be thinking more medium term with this team. He surely can't sort us out so quickly?  I hope he can but it is perhaps asking too much. Perhaps we should revert to a defensive style and hope for moments of magic. Won't be pretty but may yield better results.

Its not pre-season meltdown per se. It's been a feeling of mine for at least 18 months.

Nothing like giving the new owner, manager and DoF time to turn things around and rebuild the club. Koeman's been in the job for about 6 fucking weeks. People need to sit down and have a serious word with themselves.

I don't think so mate. A summary of our whole pre season; results, performances and transfer activity would be 'under-whelming.' We'd all like to feel buoyant going into our first game but it all feels a bit flat. Granted it means nothing and next week is a clean slate when things could click, and we all hope they do, but if you were a betting man you wouldn't put a tenner on us starting the season strongly going with what we've got. Big week coming up.

Quite worrying...  no real sign of a Koeman-effect today and we seemed to be going back to our old habits . A real lack of both intensity & high tempo which was the least I was expecting.

Positive things are hard to find today, although we did deserve a goal or two first half and that would've given us of the some confidence which we still lack.

Probably not but pre season, unless you look unfit, has almost no bearing on performance in the real games.

And even then a season is over 38 games.

Absolutely no way you can panic / be overly optimistic on pre season games.

Find me the quote that says it was going to be a 'big week of transfers'. The only thing close to it is 'Ronald and the chairman are very busy with that'. The 'this week' thing is a made up editorial comment from Phil Kirkbride. At no point does Erwin Koeman say 'this week' or put any time frame on it.

Thats why Koeman joined this project. It'll take about 3 possibly 4 transfer windows to get the club back to competing top 6 maybe even top 4. He has to clear up alot of garbage his predaccessor left him, that'll take time.

An 8th or 9th place finish would be seen as good progress. It may well be the following season where Everton are able to push on and bring in better calibre of players.

Even those who are calling some out for having a meltdown must admit that we need some signings.

I haven't seen any of the match today, but I've seen all the other games, and I'm definitely far more optimistic than I was this time last year.

If everything was fine, we wouldn't have appointed an entirely new management team would we?

So clearly there's problems, and those problems don't just get rectified in a few pre-season games. He's not a magician. It'll take loads of hard work, and loads of repetition of drills to get better.

I don't understand what people were expecting. If you've allowed yourself to get carried away and thought we'd be flying once the new season started, you've not been paying close enough attention and your expectations are massively unrealistic.

I've liked the look of Stekelenburg too.

Wished I'd witnessed Gueye today (although I am in Brighton, and 'Pride' is in full swing outside 😏)

Deulofeu has been great up top, shame we can't clone the little blighter ("OK, mate" )

My instinct tells me Lukaku doesn't want to be with us, and that doesn't fill me with confidence.

I said it before and I'll say it again. I believe we are not going to bring anyone big in. Koeman is going to shore this team up with a few solid signings and see what he has. We might get a big signing in January if it's available and for the right cost, but I don't see us splashing cash around till next summer. To be honest, I don't think Koeman wants to splash cash around right now. Realistically It's just to soon, and he seems like a realistic man.

This season is going to be about growing pains. A top 10 finish while playing solid as a unit and not losing games we lead 2-0 with 13 minutes to go is what I'm expecting.

Stones and Lukaku, great players on their day. However if someone was to offer us over £100m to replace them with fresh faces of players who gave a shit and changed the team dynamic with their new presence and energy I'd take it. Everything is just so stale and I've seen nothing in pre season to suggest this will change massively.
I'm not sure 'take the money and run' is an option though, the way this summer's transfers have panned out. Who do we bring in? Sell Lukaku and get Berahinho for £25m? Would we be happy with that? It was assumed we could sell Rom and get someone like Lacazette in for £30m - but Lyon laughed at West Ham's £42m offer so God knows how much he's cost, and he'd still be a risk, as would any player from another league. Rise in value of Prem players was expected but surprised at the inflation in other leagues. We'd have to spend massively to replace him.

Cast your minds back if you will to pre season 2013, the start of the Bobby era.
We got beat by an Austrian team, went to a tournament in the States got beat by Madrid and Valencia, sneaked a penalty win over Juventus.
When the League kicked off we drew with Norwich, West Brom and Cardiff we were shite. We pipped Stevenage AET in the League cup and there were similar melt downs, (possibly same individuals ) as today.

Then we beat Chelsea 1-0 and went onward and upward. Ended up 5th highest points ever, and that was with a shite manager.

The point of this history lesson - haven't a clue. And neither does anyone else know what way it'll go but you can't get too excited over pre season. Spurs could get beat 1-0 next week, we could park the bus and hit them on the break in the 89th minute. If we did what the fuck good is their 6-1 win then?

I think he's a bit loose on the control issues but tackling and interceptions look decent quality. Obviously we have to wait to see how he works out, but without doubt you could see exactly why his stats compared so well with Kante. First bit of scouting players looks promising.

I'd just like to know exactly what it is that Ross Barkley is bringing to the table at present.
Answers on a postcard.

His decision making doesn't seem to be improving at all and he's just not looking like that world class midfielder that we thought he was going to morph into.

Barkley and Deulofeu. They dont consistantly do anything. They look like players you can only trust for 10 minutes as a sub if youre behind. When they are bad they are dreadful.

the ref blow his whistle

some lads ran about a bit

we conceded a penalty , they scored

they conceded a penalty, we missed

loads of subs were made

we huffed and puffed and ran about a bit  but more slowly this time

the ref blew his whistle

the game finished

we lost and the world is about to end

Whilst I agree somewhat please name me the garbage players we have? Legitimately asking. McGeady aside)

Kone, Niasse, Cleverly. Barry will be a bit part player for one more season
Unsure what McCarthy brings. Not the same player he was in his first season.
Besic injury prone. I'm hoping he can come back injury free as I believe he will be a useful player to have.
Deulofeu has pace but his vision needs questioning. He is more an impact player.

Keep Lukaku, Lennon, Funes Mori and Robles as second choice goalie for me beyond next season.

It was a bit of a nothing game really. Conceded a penalty early on from a ridiculous Gueye challenge. They had another chance which brought out a really good save (was much too easy playing through us) Deluofeu won 1 just before half time. Barkley blasted it too near the keeper and he tipped it away. Nowt else really happened

Gueye looked very good. Busy wins it in good positions and lots of times. Bit careless in possession at times but he was promising. Barkley Deluofeu (apart from winning the penalty) and Lukaku were all shite. Probably deserved a draw. Bit drag we need matchwinners that produce 6s and 7s when not winning matches. Ours Lukaku Barkley Deluofeu and Mirallas (though not this pre season) produce 3s and 4s

Let me just correct this: It's not a 3 inch cut, it's 3 stitches in a cut in his heel. :)

Might have a little entertainment in the next few days. Klopp just refused to speak to the sun. Says it's not because he's Liverpool manager but because what's happening in the next few days/week. They are obviously planning to excuse him as something. Transvestite scat lover is my bet

Can't see Kone getting much game time. Niasse will never see Goodiison again. Cleverly I like. Barry yes he has to go but Ronald has made that purchase.

Would take a 0-0 next week

It's going to be a slow start I think, hopefully make some key signings in the last couple of days of the window and get stronger as the season goes on

We may have to adjust expectations a bit I think. It's not an overnight job. If we can finish 2 or 3 places higher than last season then it's a decent enough start for Koeman

He's just got far too much work to do to get us in the top 4/5

Even if we'd got the likes of Mata and Witsel, it'd have still taken the stars to have aligned on the last Tuesday of the Elf calender to get top 6 with how strong the teams already above us would have been.

Its not about finishing positions this year, its about trying to keep in touch with that group of teams right to the end of the season even if it means finishing 9th/10th.  Last season finishing 11th wasn't just the position, it was the fact we spent the last 3 months of the season looking down instead of looking up.

Yes and that we were 13 points off 8th.

We've got to look like we're not too far off and that the odd addition here or there will make that difference.

Whereas now there's a fairly widespread fear that we're miles off.

Weve far too many who are absolutely dreadful as often as they are good. Lukaku Deulofeu and Barkley all need to pick up the bottom end of their performances massively. We cannt reply on them to be competent some weeks. We need a better bottom level from all 3

Spot on that..

When they are good they are fucking good.

When they are bad they are fucking bad.

We need consistent players who can be relied upon to give at least a good performance every week.

It's not too much to expect at this level either that, I mean I play 5's every week and I'm fucking awesome each and every week without fail so why can't they do it for £££££££££££ every week

: )
