"The 31 year old former England captain left Goodison Park in 2004 in what was then a record deal for a teenager in England.  Now, he looks set to return to his boyhood club and celebrate the move and the anniversary of the birth of NSNO with a Big Mac, fries and a banana milkshake. Now we just need to hijack the John Terry move and maybe convince Ronaldinho to come out retirement and our profile will be through the roof!

I'm all about raising the club's profile, me. I mean I don't think anyone outside of Liverpool had even heard of us before today. Cant wait to sit back and enjoy all the wondrous benefits that will surely follow from our new "raised profile".

It doesn't really. I asked my wife if she knew who David Beckham is. She said of course. I asked her if she knew who Wayne Rooney was. She laughed at the name.

He better be able to play well, he ain't raising our profile one jot!

Don't get all the negativity, we've got him back on a free (on 50% wages) as part of a £100m package deal that few would have dreamt off and he's replacing Kone FFS.

Let's face it he was using united as a cashcow (& fair play) he's now managed to force through a free transfer. Koemans team will get him on a proper diet with a special training strategy together with his Passion back. All those doubters will be the first to start Brown Nosing him once he's smashed in a few..

The guy will create huge space for the likes of Klassen and Sandro..because up front teams will try and Mark him out the game ....I for one look forward to Kone's  replacement doing a dam sight more than his predecessor ever did .
Plus he will end up on staff ...we need that winning mentality .

You talk about Man Utd are a part time pub team. That's Manchester United...one of the biggest teams in the world.

Proper diet? Special training strategy? I think they know what they're doing.

I don't mind a reasoned argument for his return, improper use by managers, needing regular games, Koeman has no reason to be sentimental, etc. However, hinging a rationale on this sort of thing seems a bit silly.

The whole passion thing seems nonsensical too. He's a professional footballer. Was he able to fake passion really well 5-6 years ago? Is that why Rooney played well then and not now?

If he was still getting selected regularly, he'd probably have happily retired at Man Utd.

It looks like it's nailed on though, so I hope he come back and does as well as any fan would hope.

As was foretold from the scriptures in St Luke's in 2004.

And so will the prodigal son return once his career is on the Wayne. And the many who jeered him will again cheer him, even though age has clearly weirded him, yet his hair has reappeared again, nothing ever will be quite the same again.

Look 5/6 years ago he could get away with a poorer diet, but in my opinion he's going to be a far fitter/sharper Rooney than what we've seen over the past 2 seasons.

There's too many wingebags righting him off before he's even kicked a ball.

Me too, at first I was in two minds but we've actually played a blinder getting him on a free(ish) deal and the knock on effect throughout the club on & off the pitch should help attract the final key signings.

I see Rooney playing in a sort of Lampard mould, picking the ball up deep and spreading play. He might have lost pace but he hasn't lost his vision and passing ability. Also still has a knack of scoring a few goals so will be very useful especially against the smaller teams. On a free transfer at £150k a week, I really think he has a lot to offer us.

I don't.

I hope to see him doing the clever things in the final third that we've been average at for a few years.

Making the right decision more often should lead to more chances and hopefully more goals.

I'm hoping he will have a similar impact to what Teddy Sheringham had when he moved to United. A link up player who does not rely on pace and scores a useful amount of goals. Rooney has an eye for a pass and an eye for goal.

I'm probably having a harder time with this transfer for that reason. It's hard to get excited about Rooney when we are losing our best player of the last few years in the process. We're also on the surface buying a player, who is likely on the decline versus one who potentially has his best years ahead of him. On top of that selling to a club who we are trying to compete with for a top 4 finish, the team directly above us last year no less. This barely seems to get a mention. Strengthening those above you seems a poor way of making up ground on them.

I'd have probably been sorta interested about how Lukaku and Rooney could've worked together, even though Man Utd clearly are not.

Going to be pedantic here, but surely then he didn't take a pay cut? He didn't make any sacrifice it would seem on salary to expedite the move. Not that I blame him for that, he knew Man United were willing to pay to get him off the books so he kinda had them over a barrel.

No it's totally a fair point you make. In real terms he'll be unaffected. But with Utd covering half of the wages it's much more palatable for us not to be having him on 2-3 times as much as anyone else at the club, out of our pocket. People would use it as a stick to beat him with, anytime he had a bad game.

Koeman will sort it, if he is a success, bask in the glow of the prodigal son returning and leading us to success. (hopefully)

Most clubs in the premier league would bite your hand off for a free Rooney on £100-£150k a week.
As much as it hurt when he left, if he's still got some of that fire in his belly, he's an absolute no brainer on a free.

Please people could we stop with the Jorgensen shouts! Unless you follow him week in week out and still want him you must be blind! He would be a massive step backwards, Ajax have also said 2 players are not for sale and Dolberg was one of them. We would have to bid a ridiculous amount for them to consider Dolberg's sale.

Ever since we started spending real money my Feyenoord friends were joking about us buying Jorgensen for €12m and laughing as they thought it was too much and then the real rumours started for even more money and they were pissing themselves laughing. Yes he scored a lot but even the normal Feyenoord supporters know he is overrated (only the diehard supporters who wouldn't know what talent was and how to spell football never mind kick one rate him).

I know he is not popular but for the way it looks like Koeman is wanting to play based on the incoming players Giroud might be the best option if not then Batman from Chelsea (sorry keep forgetting how to spell his name, Bally don't ban me for using a nickname)

I think the smoke before fire of our transfers to date means we're definitely most interested in Giroud. Would make sense as he's less of a gamble. We'd definitely have a slow front combo though if we're pairing Rooney and Giroud together.

It's not that good, we pay a hell of a lot of tax and health insurance is going through the roof and you have to have it! So unless you  smoke weed (which I do not ) or visit hookers a lot (which I never do) then it's not that much fun!

But then again the women are hot and the beer is good 😊

Funny thing about Giroud is that even though he is classed as slow he gets on the end of a lot of counter attacks at arsenal! But he does need players around him who make up for his lack of speed. He is a goal scorer and a proper target man (which Koeman always has in his teams) but he also has flair, just look at some of his goals and passes.

No I cannot forget it ,you have your view and I have mine .What would you honestly do if it was you ,now ? Play for your favourite team( (that never changed ) the badge kissing was in retaliation ) or win a shit load of medals and become vastly wealthy ? I don't want to prompt you but the first answer is the only one I can accept .

Yeah its just for me the hypocrisy of people slamming Lukaku for being a non Everton fan with the temerity to aim higher, but welcoming back the biggest snake in our history is a bit rich. Especially when that snake is infinitely worse a player.

I don't.

I hope to see him doing the clever things in the final third that we've been average at for a few years.

Making the right decision more often should lead to more chances and hopefully more goals.

I hope your right but the only problem with this is that Rooney doesn't possess the slight of foot and turn that you need in and around the box anymore. In an ideal scenario, it would be great if he turned into a Eriksson or Silva but I just can't see that happening.

I also think that if he could be clever in and around the box, then he wouldn't be leaving United

If Lukaku was any good, Chelsea wouldn't have sold him in the first place. If Schneiderlin was any good, he'd have been able to get in United first team. If Ronaldo was any good, they wouldn't have put up a statue of Niall Quinn.

And here's stats for Rooney from last season, it's not a big pool of data, but presumption he has had a Wayning effect only fair over appearances, not when he's been on the pitch. I've done per game and per 90, as he was sub a fair bit, but it's none too shabby either way.

Premier League

Appearances 15 (10)
Minutes 1540
5 Goals 0.2 pg / 0.29 p90
Shots 2.1 pg
5 Assists 0.2 pg / 0.29 p90
Passes 31.2 pg

Europa League

Appearances 4 (3)
Minutes 360
2 Goals - 0.29 pg / 0.5 p90
Shots 1 pg
3 Assists 0.43 pg / 0.75 p90
Passes 25 pg

He's not set the world alight recently, but sometimes a change reignites something.

He's been there and done it, and you don't just lose your talent. His game wasn't all about pace, he's an intelligent player.

If we can get a good 2 seasons out of him he could take us to the next level.

He'll be anxious about his reception I reckon but if we make him feel he's come home I think he'll be fired up to pay us back for it. He could be the intelligent play maker we've needed. He lacks pace but so did Peter Reid... I also think he'll turn Ross's head back the right way round.

As ridiculous as this is I'd love to know how they'll do the reveal. I was thinking something like this;

Camera is panning round Finch Farm but there's no-one there. Goes into a car and arrives at Goodison and as the camera goes around the inside of the stadium (offices etc) we see players possibly from Rooneys first time with us. Leads onto the pitch and the first team are playing and it starts with Pickford (just see his feet) and the balls played through and the last shot (no pun intended) is the ball reaching a foot. Camera pans out and Rooneys revealed as he hits one into the Gwladys Street goal.
Haha thoughts?

United had his best years but we had those times when he made the break through and was so exciting, and you can't take that away.  I'm really excited about Wayne coming home.  There's an honesty about it knowing he's one of us and so are his family.  And yeah - that first goal he scores back at Goodison will be special.

Koeman articulating what a few have been saying on here for months...

http://www.evertonfc.com/news/2017/07/09/koeman-weve-got-a-winner

Quote
Ronald Koeman has emphasised Wayne Rooney’s “experience, winning mentality and ambition” as the key reasons behind his decision to bring England’s all-time leading goalscorer back to Everton from Manchester United on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The Everton manager is excited by the possibility of a player of Rooney’s stature and history of winning titles coming into his squad, which has already been strengthened this summer by the arrivals of Jordan Pickford – in a Club-record deal for a fee of £25million potentially rising to £30million – Dutch international midfield player Davy Klaassen from Ajax for €27million, former Barcelona striker and Spain Under-21 international Sandro Ramirez, Henry Onyekuru, the Belgian Pro League’s joint-top goalscorer last season who will spend the 2017/18 season on loan at Anderlecht, and England international defender Michael Keane, also for a fee potentially rising to £30million.

Rooney’s homecoming represents the sixth signing of the summer by the Blues and the Everton manager has no doubt about what the 31-year-old Rooney will add to the team.

“Wayne has shown me that ambition that we need and that winning mentality – he knows how to win titles and I’m really happy he’s decided to come home,” Koeman said.

“He loves Everton and he was desperate to come back. He is still only 31 and I don’t have any doubts about his qualities. It’s fantastic he’s here.

“It’s all about his fitness and his desire, but he has shown me that ambition that we need. He knows how to win titles, as I said. No-one in the team except Gareth Barry and Davy Klaassen [in the Eredivisie] have won titles. The Under-20s are World Champions but not in the Premier League. He is that player. And don’t forget the experience he will give to the rest of the team.

“Wayne, of course, is still competitive – he will be a competitor always – and he wants to play at the highest level that is possible for him. We have spoken several times about Everton and what we are striving to achieve.

“That’s really interesting for Wayne and a lot of football players and, of course, in the situation of Wayne he was here at the beginning when he was young player for Everton. It’s his home and he likes that competition, he likes that pressure. I’m really happy that he finally decided to come back.

“His main quality is his quality on the ball, his experience and what I describe as his winning mentality. Everybody knows he can play out of different positions up front. He’s a smart player. He’s an experienced football player and that helps everybody.

“We have a lot of young players and sometimes in life you need somebody who you look up to, who you learn from. That was also one of the messages when we spoke about on and off the pitch what his function will be in the team.

“One of the functions for Wayne is to show the rest of the team why he is - and still is - that player.”

So what are Man U paying on this - his contract is up and we're getting him on a free - do Man u pay up his wage or what?

We essentially sold Rom for 100 million. 75 up front, 15 in add ons and we both valued Rooney at 10 million. He's on 160k a week with us, and from what I've read we're paying him to lump sums of 4 million at different times. Utd have written off a load of money to him as well which would account for the other half of his wages for two years.

That's my understanding of it.

He's looking really lean, which suggests he's eager and determined. He's not here for a swansong.

And it's not just Lookman, DCL, Holgate and the other kids at the club who will be pinching themselves during their first training session with him, it'll be Barkley too - a boyhood blue who would have been about 10 when he left.

Scenes!

Usually when players sign for clubs they go through the motions of the interview and just say things like I can't wait to get started etc etc. With Rooney, it is the first time I can remember where we have signed someone, and he literally wanted to just burst out smiling and laughing with excitement during the interview. There was no faking it, the lad is proud to be back and 2-3 years of his quality and experience will do the club wonders

Of course, it broke me when he left, and i did hate him in the past, but i grew up, as did he...and i love what he has become. Cant wait to see him back in the blue.

Just gone into my wardrobe and pulled out a Football 365 Everton Rooney face t-shirt I bought in 2002.

It's got a hole under an arm, a bit of mould on the hem, and the print of his big, beautiful face is cracked up like a lovely, antique mosaic.

It's currently whirring in the washing machine behind me, waiting to be worn with pride in the gym tomorrow ☺️

ANNOUNCING PLAYERS ON A SUNDAY???????????

We haven't got time to fuck about in this window - there's only 8 weeks left - Sigurdsson next, then Giroud, then Lemos, then.... etc etc etc

I still can't believe this 😃

I'm so much more excited than I thought I would be.

It genuinely feels reminiscent to when Lineker and Cottee signed, but wrapped up with extremely vivid, hopeful, and joyful feelings of pride that I felt watching him blossom 2002-2004, and then that gut-wrenching pain of the media piranhas selling him for us during Euro 2004... that football induced pain was similar to the RS goals in the FA Cup final in '86.

I'm rambling.

This feels amazing 🙌🏼

Was never like that for me. I think because we'd been hearing stories about him for so long in the youth set up, and because of his build and confidence immediately on the pitch, I was never in the slightest doubt that he was going to be incredible. If anything, he didn't end up quite as good as I thought he was going to.

This is an issue with opposition fans. I had the argument with an envious kopite last night that was saying we've replaced an ever improving Lukaku with a broken Wayne Rooney. Saying we've been mugged off.

He couldn't grasp the concept we'll sign another striker with the Rom proceeds and that Rooney is not our main forward.

All I need now is the club to sign said top striker or my ass is going to be handed back to me.....

Wayne Rooney: I wore Everton pyjamas during my time at Manchester United
http://www.espnfc.us/everton/story/3155474/wayne-rooney-i-wore-everton-pyjamas-during-my-time-at-manchester-united

Wayne Rooney says he has always remained an Everton fan and even wore their pyjamas during his time at Manchester United.

The 31-year-old's anticipated move back to his boyhood club after 13 successful years at Old Trafford was confirmed on Sunday.

He leaves United as their record goal scorer with 253 strikes and after winning 12 major honours, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League.

But Rooney, who has signed a two-year deal at Goodison Park, says Everton always remained close to his heart.

"It feels great [to be back]," Rooney, who burst onto the scene as a 16-year-old with the Toffees, told Everton TV. "To be honest, I've kept it quiet for the last 13 years, but I've actually been wearing Everton pyjamas at home with my kids. I had to keep that a bit quiet!

"It's a great feeling to be back. I'm excited, I cannot wait to meet the lads, get on the training pitch and then get on the pitch to play. I'm ecstatic -- I just cannot wait to get back playing.''

His dad and older son are delighted, he wants to play, not fit yet, looking to get to know teammates. Wants to win trophies, but actions speak louder than words. Focused on Everton, not England, up to him to show form for Everton that makes him hard to leave out. Was given a few awkwardly phrased questions about time at United. Generally the questions were pretty poor and didn't leave much to be answered.

Koeman had to redirect conversation a few times, dismissing discussions on new targets. Was clearly annoyed when asked a question about Barkley and Rooney forming a scouse spine in team. Was asked about guarantees on first team football and said something along the lines of there isn't any, he plays on merit.

So the benefit is a few million kids in third world countries now getting updates on twitter that are Everton related for a couple years.

Maybe I need to be on twitter to fully appreciate the benefits, that just doesn't sound all that amazing to me.

I'm in agreement that this will spread our brand world wide.

I'm not saying it's going to make us 100's of millions of quid on shirt sales like signing Pogba, or Ronaldo would do. Or I'm all of a sudden going to see Everton shirts everywhere instead of Real or Barca shirts.

But to blow off this many people around the world "liking", or following this guy on social media like it means absolutely F all is pretty naive.

Ok fine. Sure it's no bad thing, but still don't really see what's so great about that. Leicesters name got pinged around shit loads last year, not sure if that does them a bunch of good. My sense is that to get the benefits of a larger global following you need long-term sustained success on the pitch. In this transient world of social media, the "quick hit" of a 31 year old fading superstar or even a one off trophy I just don't see having a massive lasting benefit to the club.

Not knocking the transfer, but really not seeing this point about how wonderful this will be for the club due to an improved brand or profile or whatever people are calling it.

I get it doesn't mean F all, its just some people I really think are overstating the benefits. I've seen some on here list the impact on our global recognition as the main reason to go ahead with the transfer.

It's probably one of them.

You think Pogba was bought for that kind of money because he plays well in mid field?

And I'm not comparing the two. The example given is just an example of what era we are now in. They didn't pay that much for Pogba to score 5 goals.

Where it can have an immediate impact is sponsorship deals. You can go up to ACME Corporations and say "Hey, do you want to be our official dynamite supplier? We've got a guy who will happily blow up the Roadrunner in a promotional video and he's got 25 million followers who'll see it."

Whereas previously it would've been "We could maybe sneak a promotional piece into the Liverpool Echo about Arouna Kone being a fan of ACME products."

So some extra shirt sales, a handful more televised games perhaps... But how will this actually benefit us in ways that are "excellent"?

- Everton becomes even more of a recognised global name and with an extremely well known boyhood Evertonian at the club he will do his part to promote our club not just on the pitch but off it as well especially with regards to the great work of Everton In The Community. Even if 95% of his 25m Facebook followers don't support Everton, he could be a very good conduit by posting what he's doing at Everton and giving an insight into the heart of the "People's Club" and potentially lead to tens of thousands of his followers to convert into genuine Everton fans through him.

- Having such a well known footballer will be extremely attractive to our existing and potential sponsors and commercial partners and create more lucrative deals, boosting our income further. For example, Sportpesa's exposure will have skyrocketed in the last couple of days with potentially up to a billion people worldwide having seen the image of Wayne Rooney in an Everton Sportpesa shirt signing the contract - and potentially win them more clients for their betting platform. They have already tweeted that Rooney is joining the Tanzanian tour and seem to have received far more likes/retweets for that post than for an earlier one featuring Leon Osman - that is one example of the Rooney effect for them.

I think Rooney will indeed play some striker, but when he does, it will be if/when he comes off the bench as the "super sub" (whether he does this most of the time or not).  We are clearly still looking for someone to start in that role.  Rooney could be very effective once there once the defense has been softened up, but you hardly want him doing the donkey work.

Best striker at the club. Why play him anywhere else?

I'm saying I want him to play, I don't like him saying/hinting he won't come off the bench, or that he will be pissed about it if that's his role.  Or that he will automatically get a run of games as starter unless/until he proves he must be benched, which would suck for fan morale.  I don't like these black/white hero/goat options - put him in the best position to succeed, even if that success is more what you would expect from a "normal" veteran player.

Anyway, that's why I have been staying off the general Rooney threads, it just makes no sense to me why we would put him in a role he seems so clearly physically unsuited for.  Plus, I'm not trying to make people angry.  Let's just see what happens.

He hasn't said or hinted it though. All he's said  or hinted at is he wants to play football and is hungry to succeed and still play at the top. And hopefully he will be pissed off if he's not getting a game, I'd be disappointed if he wasn't.

I think a few of us on here are hoping we can run before we can walk, we wont be getting young Champions League quality players in this season, because we are still not at the position to attract tat type of player, the likes of Sigurdsson, Benteke, Giroud and maybe Dost are about the highest profile names we are going to attract...we are certainly not be going to get VVD, Aguero, Martial, Morata, Costa or any of those ilk this season. We need to be patient and enjoy the slow rebuilding of what could be a very good squad hopefully next year, with a mixture of old and new players who will move us on to the next level.
I for one am not going to get ahead of myself and am happy with what we are doing at the moment, hopefully we will have enough to contend for a domestic trophy, finish in the top 6/7 and progress in the Europa too.
We are a works in progress and shouldn't expect too much too soon, its not going to be easy having pretty much 75% of a new squad with players that haven't played together before ...so sit back and enjoy the ride guys.

I said at the start of the transfer window, that this would be an interim spend.
I think the real test will be next year, if and probably, when we have shown the bigger players that we mean business, and move up the league and actually challenge the top 4.
With the new intake, I think this is a possibility..... IF we get a 15 - 20 goal a season striker in.

Hate when people pick out certain transfers and we should just get these types of players and ignore the bulk of what these teams buy...

Leicester bought Huth, Upson, Simpson, experienced players with no flair, they also bought Inler, Amartey, Benaloune, Kramaric, Musa, Slimani who have been varying degrees of crap?

Spurs sounded loads of money on likes of Janssen, Sissoko, Fazio, Stambouli, N'Jie

The amazing signing who turns Champions League quality after being bought by a team not at the top table is a rare thing to be honest

To add to this:

Is there any reason to believe Pickford/Keane/Klaassen/Sandro 100% WONT turn into CL level players?

Hindsight is 20/20

Rooney is supposedly on anything from £150,000pw to £180,000pw. We won't be paying that to have him sit on the bench.

Surely will be up top with Sandro in a 4-3-3 or 3-5-2 formation?

Hell, I would expect him to play.  What's the point, otherwise?  People told me a few pages back he mentioned how he didn't like coming off the bench, and that the implication was obvious he came here solely for first team football.
Of course he WANTS first team football, he is going to have to work to get it tho

Are we even sure that Sandro has been brought in as a first teamer? I imagined he would need to earn his place, rather than it being a given that he's a starter.

You don't put a player whose scored 14 goals in La Liga in one season, in the U23's. They all have to earn their starting place.
Title: Re: Re: Summer Spending

I'm not trying to bring knives out.  I want him in the best position to succeed.

To me, seeing him come on at 60 minutes for Giroud (the most frequent option), Sandro (if he's struggling), or Sigurdsson (if we need more directness) pretty much every game keeps him most involved and most effective.  Plus he would still start sometimes, just not the majority of the time.  He would be our designated match winner, in my vision.

I think Rooney's best attributes are his versatility and ability to open up a tired defense.  To me, this maximizes that, while minimizing the impact of the pace he's lost.

And who cares how much money he's on?  Once the contract is signed, it's a sunk cost.  It's all about what's best for the club, and in this special case (because I DO agree it's special), what's best for Wayne.  It would be awful for this to go awry.

If we don't bring in a Giroud type, then I 100% agree.  That would be asking way too much of Wayne, Sandro, and DCL (again, just in my opinion).

I don't see why.  I've said everything the club has done (outside of Rooney) is brilliant business, and am now acknowledging the Rooney thing can work as long as the squad doesn't REVOLVE AROUND Rooney.  Which seems like common sense and consistent with what people close to the club say, but it certainly pisses people off anytime you mention anything of the sort.

Feel sorry for him as an individual for the way he was treated but at least Koeman was honest and didnt string him along. A few goals for Hull doesn't mean hes anywhere near the quality we need moving forward and I dont think he looked anything more than average in the games I saw anyway.
