Lads, it will be a horrible nervy performance by us, they will have plenty of possession, but luck will be on our side and we win 2-0, Rooney penalty and a fluke from Vlasic

Watford have looked good this season and this will be a tough game

One to look out for is Richarlison, dangerous attacking talent who has settled really well in the Premier League

Massive game for us and we need the win

                Pickford

Holgate Jagielka Keane Baines

     Baningime Gana Davies

Lookman                      Vlasic
                Rooney

Weíve shown that when set up correctly we can be solid.

The real wobbles have been when weíve tried to be ďEvertonĒ and forgotten that weíre in a terrible run of form and the defence needs to be good for 5/6/7 games etc before worrying about showing that we ďget what the fans wantĒ.

If Unsy gets this wrong again on Sunday weíll lose but a new manager should recognise this so I wouldnít panic yet.

Well unless we donít make an appointment / make a terrible one...

Pickford

Holgate Jags Keane Baines

Beni Schneiderlin
Sigurdson

Lookman Vlasic
Rooney

Gueye and Davies aren't disciplined enough positionally for DM in this bad run of form, that's why (among other reasons) Leicester ripped us apart in the first half.

Kenny Jagielka Keane Baines

I want Beni as the deepest DM I think. He looks press resistant, can pass a bit.

Or maybe Gana to stop him being so involved final third.

I also want us to buy Carvalho in jan as our DLP.

He'll just play DM if you drop him back. You'll see him going all the way back to the edge of our area to pick up balls and it will mess with our back 4 and Baningime, while leaving Gana our link to our forwards. This won't work.

No matter how high or back up the field you play him he will always just get in the way.

Is it blasphemous to want Gana on the bench, at least for a little while? He lacks the positional discipline to play as a lone DM and he ruins attacks when he has license to get forward.

Baningime has shown him up these past three matches. Sits in his area, mops up, maybe dribbles past a man to buy us time, lays the ball off simply, goes back to his area. That's what we need at DM. At the other positions, we need more attack-minded midfielders, like Davies, Sigurdsson, or Klaassen, because our forward players aren't scoring goals if they're isolated (they may not any way, but theyíre definitely not if nobody is getting close to them).

I agree with this but might have to wait until weíre more confident and able to express ourselves more.

If next 5 games see three 0-0s and two 1-0 wins then great.

Definitely need one more attacking midfielder in there from yesterday. For home games at least.

I can see the logic in that. Still, I can't handle another 60/90 minutes of watching attack after attack die at his feet. I think the defensive issues you're rightfully concerned about are as much to do with our wastefulness in possession as they are to do with having sub-par individual defenders. And Gana is the king of the wasteful-in-possession players.

Sigurdsson and Davies are both responsible, if unspectacular, defenders. I think we can live with the two of them in box-to-box roles in front of a genuine holding player. Especially since my head won't be dropping every time they touch the ball in or around the final third.

We need to turn Goodison into a bear pit this season.

I want us to be hated.  I want teams - and fans - to fear coming to Goodison because we're a gang of bastards.  I want dads saying "No son, I'm not taking you to Everton again, not after last time" after this season.  The fannies.

I want it to hurt teams to beat us.  Yeah, you might go away with three points, but you'll need to borrow one of our physios to help you all onto the coach.  I want that type of Everton back.

I want away fans to be kept in at the end for their safety.  I want them to miss their trains and hate us.  I want their coach drivers to charge them overtime.  I want their fan clubs to lose their deposits on the coach hire.  I want it to be an absolute pain in the balls to come to Everton.

Because it is for us.  So it better had be for everyone else as well.

Title: Re: Everton v Watford
Post by: kramer0 on November 04, 2017, 01:56:48 AM
I think Sandro needs another chance, just not as a striker. When he's played, he's looked like he has zero desire to get into the penalty area. Obviously, we're a bit of a mess and Koeman's "plans" didn't flatter him, but that's still disturbing. Especially given this, from before the season:

https://differentgame.wordpress.com/2017/07/04/the-data-scout-sandro-ramirez/ (https://differentgame.wordpress.com/2017/07/04/the-data-scout-sandro-ramirez/)

Like others have said, it seems like he's better suited to being a wide forward, especially since we can really use someone who can pass into the box.

I think Rooney is the best player in the CF role for the time being. He's good for possession purposes and, despite having lost it physically, he still has the best penalty box instincts of anyone at the club.

Edit: I still don't know why we didn't go for any of Iheanacho, Abraham, Haller, or Mounie. Four reasonably good fits that moved this summer. Even someone like Giovanni Simeone or Duvan Zapata would have been interesting. Getting this close on Giroud doesn't excuse any of it. It stinks.

The ball control is admittedly disturbing. Maybe even more disturbing than his resistance to the penalty area.

I think Klaassen has something to give but I'm having a hard time advocating for him right now because he doesn't look to get on the ball at all and we don't have room for passengers. He's sort of like Muller in the way he roams around the pitch looking for space (or looking to create space for his teammates), except he doesn't have anywhere near the athleticism or influence on the game. With that said, he played a big role in creating space for Rooney's goal against Stoke and contributed directly to a few of our goals during Europa qualification, so maybe we need to be a bit bolder about using him given how ineffective our attack is right now.

I think this would bring out the best in both Rooney and Sandro (plus give me a reason to wear my #9 shirt, ha) - perhaps if Rhino tells him he is counting on him to stay in position to help out a struggling young lad in Sandro it will break through?  A disciplined Rooney could be well dangerous, since it allows us to play Sigurdsson and still have Wayne's "magic moment" potential.

Plus, you need to have Lookman running around and stirring things up.  Good shout.

I know it's crazy after all the complaining I've done about how they should never be on the pitch together, but there's now a small part of me that wants to see that Klaassen-Sigurdsson-Rooney triangle in a 4-3-3 structure that might actually support it. Like in the second half of the Chelsea match.

Yeah definitely same. Itís surely he best case scenario isnít it, they click and you suddenly have 3 nice short passers with great technique and an eye for goal, who are all aggressive in the tackle and hard workers within their own physical abilities.

The smart, triggered pressing without overt pace that @GLewis (http://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=258) was talking about.

We knew that we needed more goals from midfield this summer.

We've almost certainly shot ourselves in the foot by regularly playing Gana in one of the midfield slots we need goals from.

This game does feel massive.

I agree with the shouts to bench Gana, he should not be played as an attacking midfielder and he doesn't have the positional discipline to be a holding midfielder that just sits and shields the defence, unless we play with 3 central midfielders then he might have a role being busy in the midfield. If we can get the 2-or-3-man central midfield combination right then I think we will have a good chance.

Maybe the thought was - god these guys arenít gelling, we need to be able to semi rely on that area while they get used to one another, and Gana might not be the most creative but he gives you energy and pressing and heís not TERRIBLE on the ball we just need more.

First time Unsworth has had the crowd behind him . I think they will appreciate an attacking formation but the worry is Watford are actually quite pacy . Think the game will open up a bit and we would definitely be better suited playing Vlasic and Lookman further up the pitch than they have been . Can understand Unsworth trying to keep it tight in the first half of his games so far but they have all been away and that will not sit well with the crowd at home . Going for 3-2 here in a bit of a nerve shredder .

No I think it’s fair.

One conservative DM with two attack minded players who can get through plenty of work like Davies, Klaassen and sig. MAYBE even rooney, I mean I dunno it probably wouldn’t work but let him range from cm rather than drop from st..

It is a very good point but I think Gueye is the one who has suffered most from not having a more creative midfielder around him.  He is being asked to do far too much to maintain much discipline . Been impressed with Beningimes discipline so far but they will both suffer with no real forward outlet .

One thing opening the game up if youíve got a guarantee of goals when itís your turn to attack.

As we saw vs Leicester, which wasnít a keep it tight selection at all, that if you go behind any confidence is obliterated.

The crowd might not like it, but we should very much be keeping it tight for a good hour.

Can you really see 3 goals from us at the moment?

Thatís part of the problem. Psychologically, if we go 0-1 down scoring 2 to win the game feels like a mountain.

The crowd will be behind the team if itís obvious the team is being aggressive in winning the ball back; doesnít look like conceding with each opposition attack etc.

Of course Iíd expect more attacking players than Thursday; but equally just playing Rooney and dropping Sigurdsson to one of the midfield slots would still be solid but offer 4 attacking players too.

I want to see Sandro and I still rate him. Inside right is perfect for him and us right now. I'm also looking forward to seeing the back of Unsworth to be completely honest. His complete rejection of players other then British ones that 'like to get stuck in' is nauseating. I'm looking forward to seeing the exploitation of the talent that certainly exists in our squad. And that doesn't include Aaron Lennon who has proven track record of achieving F all on a football pitch.

Whatever the line up i hope Unsworth sets out with a similar plan as Lyon, even though it went Pete Tongue we looked like we had some sort of plan and shape for the first time in yonks, it's wether Rooney can stick to a single task that's one of the problems we have as he gets in others way wandering about and spoils things, he needs to stay up there being the only real finisher we have,at 31 he needs to work smarter.

Unsworth said he is looking forward to having the home crowd fully behind the team. I hope he gets it and despite our awful performances so far we need to put behind us the terrible atmosphere at previous home games. I think the crowd will get behind the team from the start. Leicester just sat back and hit us on the break but I still think despite the selections he was intent on keeping it tight . I think Watford will go for the win and open the game up from the start which is how they have played this season . I disagree the crowd will be fine with 0-0 at half time against Watford . Maybe 3 is optimistic but we need to be .

I agree, which makes it all the more strange to be desperate to give him a payrise and new contract, when we have a younger model in the wings who looks to have potentially more to his game in that area.

Think we should try Mirallas up top. He is good one v one, reasonably quick and skilful. One of our no10ís can put through balls into him and he is an experienced international. He has tried Rooney, Niasse, DCL and even Sigurdsson there, so surely needs to go with Super Kev, so he can have a Mertens season.

Haha. He has hardly played! When he does he is left midfield. Agreed been poor for a few seasons but he has it in his locker and a position as the No9 might galvanise him. He has legs, after all.

Neither is fucking Rooney on recent form, I'm more concerned that we have in vlasic (from what I've seen) a but of threat from the wing yet we are failing to utilise him, Niasse is a clumsy oaf, but has fight, heart and spirit, he causes chaos others could benefit from that.

Can't believe they aren't even on the bench. Mirallas too. Lookman who changed the game against Chelsea and played well in France back sat on the bench.

Might be completely wrong but it seems like unsworth is maybe picking the team on who he thinks cares/is most committed. All well and good but we need some actual quality too. Least have them options on the bench.

4. Sit back in your own penalty area for remainder of match

He is 1 of very few who might prove to be a good signing long term though

I think statistically he saves the same amount as sail past him . This could be a clean sheet though and they do breed confidence . To think I thought we would score 3 .

At least we are at 0-0 at half time, perhaps that was part of the plan, still I can't believe that with 3 central midfielders in the park we are hardly able to dominate more the game and Watford look the more dangerous going forward.

Maybe in the next 45 minutes we might come up with a plan to create one or even two chances.

Rooney has to come off, Lookman on.

Again heís played the only chance in the game.

Should be more Gueye who isnít tackling and gives the ball away nearly every time.

Wide player on, Sigurdsson deeper.

Two teams playing dull football. I'm confident about our future because these players are being hamstrung by long ball, predictable tactics

Watford's attacking stuff is usually ok to watch. Not the fanciest but plenty of pace and penetration. Wish we were as good as them going forward. Would have Richarlison here too.

Gueye always moves towards the ball, there was more than once where we already had a player or even two near a Watford player on the ball and he charged over leaving us exposed.

Sometimes that works to win the ball higher up the pitch but we can't be leaving ourselves so exposed.

Can't understand why Rooney should come off, clearly the most likely to score or create a goal and although he had an awful giveaway that's not sufficient to take off our only legit goal threat.

That's certainly part of it. The other part is we hadn't seen a skilled ball-winner in a couple of years.

He was just as ineffective in the second half of last season so the warning signs were there. It's become a full-blown problem now that we can't attack.

I don't think it was just that we had not seen a skilled ball winner. That is downplaying his effectiveness. He was up there with the best in the world statistically, and I don't recall him being quite the offensive liability. He did leave us exposed at times b/c of his exuberance, but he (in my view) easily made up for it.

So we had two midfielders who actually knew what position to stand in at the start of the season.

Sold one, leaving us with just one.

That one appears to not give the slightest fuck about playing for Everton so is omitted from the squad, leaving zero.

Top show all round.

And one youngster who also falls into this category who was being completely overlooked by Koeman, is now blooded, but is now hooked in this match.

And at least now it is less likely to be Big Sam. Still have some small hope that we can become a decent team again when we purchase an actual First 11 striker, but his arrival would quash those aspirations.

All credit to the players and Unsworth especially. He fired up the players, and made some great changes.

Although there is still massive amounts of work to do defensively, at least we scored some goals!!

Regardless of what the situation in the match was, or the goals scored, the team looked a completely different beast. More energy, better on the ball, enthusiastic, even better defensively.

During the match, even if he creates one good moment, he gives the ball away far too much, looks lethargic and sloppy and just not the player that we thought we were getting.

Yeah, I hadn't seen a Silva side this season. Wasn't impressed today I have to say. It is always tough to make judgements on a manager after a short period of time in the league as sometimes opposing teams work them out a bit. Happened with us after Martinez's first season. However, he did certainly get some great performances last season with Hull.

No, I'm not saying take over full time. I'm just saying a little credit to him. Everyone was absolutely mullering him mid way through the second half, but I've not seen anyone say anything positive about him at FT, which strikes me as more than a little harsh.

But you canít lose vs a team low in confidence like ours from 0-2 up.

Plus against Chelsea they threw the game away and lost 0-5 at home vs City.

I don't think Lookman did that much but as with Lennon it's amazing the difference a bit of pace, energy and direct running does to a side. We keep on trying to load a side with players who like to pass it around.

The difference was that at least we bought a lottery ticket by putting on players who can run at their defenders and terrify them. We didn't create much but Watford is a good team built from shit players, so if you can isolate them, you've always got a chance.

Aside from Niasseís effort right at the end we had no other open play chances and that was with all the momentum going our way.

Baines had an open goal chance but shot too close to the keeper. Also Sigs - with the goal at his mercy, but their keeper made a good save.

Their first goal was far too easy for them. That openness should never have been allowed. But, after Niasse scored and the changes were made we looked a far better and balanced team.

I would back myself to stay tight for a while and take the ball off him enough because of his first touch, but you just know over 90 mins he would run you ragged and you would get further and further away from him until he did you in.

He's like erosion!

All the stuff about hard work aside though - his movement's excellent at times. Like when he went out wide and then ran back in for Lookman to play him in for the goal. Brilliant. Not just a work-horse at all.

Sometimes you feel the tide is turning against the odds and sometimes that's all you need to have that extra bit of belief and fight.
Just scoring goals will ease the pressure on the defence, shame the international break is now, could probably do with a game tomorrow night!

amazing game that

we were so shockingly bad in the first half though, seriously

their fans are tits, to a man.  First of all they sit in the stewards seats, then kick off at the stewards who tell them to move, complaining that THEIR OWN FANS are stood up and they can't see the game (they are grown adults in their 20's at most, with no visible physical disabilities) then do a copy of every single other club's chants, then chant "We forgot that you were here" literally every 20 seconds, before the end when one got launched for saying Aaron Lennon "should find a motorway bridge to jump off"

our fans scrapping in the Park End and Paddock amongst themselves was just weird.  what is there to disagree about when we're proper shit?

great spirit in the team once Rooney went off mind - the man is a drag and a liability.  Pretty sure it's in his contract that he plays if he's fit.

Loved Oumar Niasse getting his goal, and loved Baines scoring too.

"We're gonna win the league!"

The difference was that at least we bought a lottery ticket by putting on players who can run at their defenders and terrify them. We didn't create much but Watford is a good team built from shit players, so if you can isolate them, you've always got a chance.

Not complaining, made up and some good signs to be sure.

But we’ve thrown DCL and others on in the past it just felt like this time we huffed and puffed a little bit more and we got it over the line.

We needed it, we really needed it. Deep sigh of relief in the dressing room and give their heads a wobble, start again from the next game with a bit of oompf behind them.

When fit Iíd have Bolasie in front of Baines, Lookman in front of Coleman, DCL up front with maybe Niasse, until we get a striker in the NY, so itís a matter of who we have as the middle two for me, Gueye +1 other.

Ages since I've enjoyed a football match involving Everton. Very entertaining. Big up for all involved. Wish I'd been there. Bommy night an all!

Beats a boring 1-0 win any day la.

Made-up for Unsworth. Great way to hand over the reins.

Kicking myself for not having a bet today .

If this is really the case then that's extremely disappointing but not too surprising given Mirallas' behaviour since before the transfer window and Schneiderlin has just become a liability - without Koeman holding his hand he probably will want to move on anyway.

He was great that first season under Martinez but he's been mostly poo for the last 3 years.

Schneiderlin should be ashamed by his performances though. Should be the #1 choice in his position and has absolutely no bottle or belief. He can fuck off if he's not here for the fight.

Sounded like an incredible game today and we desperately needed a positive. Any positive.

However it was a very lucky win and I'm certainly not doing cartwheels because we beat Watford at home and pulled ourselves up to 15th place. The expected standards remain as reasonable goals set for the club. What's done is done though so let's hope this is a new beginning. Perhaps we all needed this terrible period to calm expectations.

Schneiderlin looks like he needs a big pan of scouse - washed down with a few guinness foreign extra - before even dreaming of being up for a fight.

Mirallas has always been a pretty useless tool.  I find it unbelievable he's still lingering like the rancid fart he is.

Fucking bottlers everywhere in this game now though.

Was eventually an enjoyable game yesterday, once it had finished, and though it may not be the turning point where everything suddenly comes good, it is a massive 3 points and symbolic that it gets us out of the relegation zone during this international break

Big questions still remain all over the pitch, but we did get some answers on certain things, and hopefully some lessons learned going forward.

First of all, Unsworth clearly got a hell of a lot of fight out of that team today. When you've got to scrap for your life, you need people who are willing to put a shift in. Not everyone who played gave a great performance, but all the starters and all the subs came on gave it their all

Pace was key. Niasse' chasing down and threat in behind really worried Watford and stopped it being a comfortable afternoon for them. Also Lennons pace led to us winning the pen, Calvert-Lewin fresh of the bench was hard to deal with for them and also Lookman I thought was fantastic too. As teams tire they hate playing against pace

Niasse is the right striker to start at the moment. His pace, work rate and unpredictability are huge assets for us and he just makes stuff happen. Was making intelligent runs and really helps the fluidity of our attack

Calvert-Lewin is a great impact sub. He really made a great Cameo appearance today, he competes for everything in the air and worked well alongside Niasse. Helped the ball stick for us more up top

We need to use Rooney more sparingly. Also he needs to stay further forward. Was a really frustrating performance from Wayne. He seemed to drop deep, play inaccurate passes and lose the ball, hear the groans from the crowd and dive in recklessly. His legs have gone and we can't start him every single game

Pickford needs to choose the right moments for the quick distribution. While this is a great asset of his, at times today the quick distribution was the wrong option. Without Calvert-Lewin on the pitch, and with our general lack of height it was wasted today when he released the ball quickly out wide. Most of the time it resulted in us giving the ball away, and a lot of the time he attempted it we were off the back of a spell of pressure and periods of not having the ball. Also in pickfords defence he could do with some better movement from the outfield players when he does this. Should be players on each flank darting out wide and looking to get in behind

Jonjoe Kenny is starting to settle at right back. I thought he had an excellent game today. Put a real shift in, defended well and got forward to good effect too. Showed big character after a tough game at Leicester last week

Central midfield are having very little control on games. Again they offered very little protection to the defence and we pretty much had to just bypass the middle of the Park as often as possible. Davies and Beni were anonymous for a lot of the game, they are young and they do need protecting a bit. Was the right sub to bring Beni off and Davies struggled for most of the game though he did improve later on. Gana put himself about well as he always does and his sheer energy and persistence paid off, but it was far from a tidy performance. I think it is key that we start getting more control in the midfield area

Agree with @Sir Stealth (http://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=904) here, perhaps with the exception of Pickford. Sometimes I felt he should've got rid quicker, but had very little to aim at, as you say. Too often we seemed to amble into position, let them settle and then lump it forward aimlessly. And then when he did distribute it quickly, it was when we were ahead and needed to take the sting out the game - although it did create the Niasse chance at the end to be fair.

Pace is a big thing - I'm not a big 'I told you so' merchant, but in the summer after losing Lukaku, I said we were short of pace and goals in the side, and how my preference would be for 3 runners up front, to harass the opposition back line - dare I say it, like the RS.

The problem is, our pace options aren't necessarily our best players - so do we start them, where their impact will be diminished, or do we start narrow and then bring them on to run at the tiring defence with 20 or 30 minutes to go like yesterday? Or maybe start Lennon and then bring Lookman on the other side with 20 to go? Either way, I think starting Niasse is a must.

I really want Rooney and Sigurdsson to work out, but we were more effective without them on the pitch. At least we were able to sub Rooney, because some of his tackles were red cards waiting to happen. If we were to play 4-2-3-1, I think he could do a job behind the striker, with 2 wide men to aim at too. Probably the same with Sigurdsson too actually, but otherwise I'm not sure where they fit in.

One final thing, what's the deal with away-swinging free kicks and corners? The one in-swinger we had, DCL stuck away!
Title: Re: Everton v Watford
Post by: everton1952 on November 06, 2017, 04:33:20 PM
I agree with Sir Stealth. Rooney is a big worry these days. He was awful and Unsie had the bottle to take him off early. Does he have the bottle to leave him on the bench from the start? Kenny was up against a very good player and he stuck to it; he seemed to gain in confidence and when all the heads dropped at 0-2, there he was yelling encouragement at the others. If he continues like this Coleman's absence will be less important. Pickford needs some goalkeeping  coaching to stop him charging wildly out at the wrong times, and improve his ball distribution. A new manager might bring in a coach. What a night that was, no voice left again.
Title: Re: Everton v Watford
Post by: Lxxx on November 06, 2017, 04:46:44 PM
I'd drop Rooney. Not because he isn't delivering but because with him in the side we lack any kind of structure and when he's on the pitch everything seems to have to go through him, or he wants it to, but he hasn't the legs anymore. A few instances yesterday he played the ball to Baines and then stood still, then realised he had to move so made a token movement but the return ball was never on as the moment was gone.
He's still got a penetrating ball on him but I personally don't think it's worth what he brings with him as well. Sig would have to improve if he was then the main man and he needs to be now.

Was a proper day of theatrics

The atmosphere was great in the ground once the comeback was underway. The classic bearpit atmosphere definitely rattled them a bit

Their fans were totally silenced and that Holebas just totally lost his head, which was great to watch as he is a total snide. Taking ages to get out the way to try and Fuck up Baines concentration for the pen

And losing his rag with their keeper

Thank fuck for their sub keeper by the way. Absoloute horror show

Great touch as well from Oumar as well after putting the cat amongst the pigeons with that collision making sure that Gomez and Kabasele were both ok, despite the latter being a total shit to him all game

After the match I got a bus into town to go the cinema. 2 drunk Manc lads got on, cans of Stella in hand and one of them puked up all over the show, totally filled the floor of the bus and everyone was laughing their heads off except the driver

Some bevvied old fella pipes up with a chant of Here we go and a bus full of blues all joined in

Up the fucking toffees
