Title: Newcastle V Everton.
Post by: pjk on December 11, 2017, 05:36:44 PM
So! What do we reckon? I think we've got a decent chance of a win, but they're not one of the whipping boys. They're on a bad run though. :)

Fancy us to get our first away win with this one.

Big Sam will want us to beat them as much as anyone after the treatment he got there.

It’ll be interesting to see how we adapt our approach from the derby. You’d obviously expect to do a lot more with the ball.

I would hope that we would. Big Sam has shown some flexibility with tactics thus far so I expect that to continue. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see us sit back the first 15min until we can grow into the game.

Think he might start Schneiderlin ahead of Davies for this

              Pickford

Kenny Holgate Williams Martina

    Rooney Schneiderlin Gana

Lennon                    Sigurdsson

           Calvert-Lewin

The more we get Rooney on the ball with runners in front of him, the better we are in attack.

Rooney deserves a ton of credit for yesterday. He basically only had one opportunity like that and managed to play a perfect ball for Calvert-Lewin. We don't score if he doesn't absolutely nail that pass.

It’s a cert Rafa will focus on Martina as our weakest link, whatever you think of Rafa he always focuses on opposing teams obvious failings and Martina playing out of position is ours.

Newcastle this season have struggled against teams who use the flanks so it’s essential at least one of Rooney or Gilfy is moved and replaced with Lennon/Mirallas/Lookman/Vlasic

I would also consider dropping DCL, not because he has done anything wrong but Newcastle don’t suffer from his type of player, they struggle far more against pace and Niasse or Sandro could be a better option.

I also think we need to be careful with fatigue.
We could see the game against Huddersfield we suffered with fatigue after 2 games in 4 days, the same could be true on Wednesday.

We have a few players like Schneiderlin who could fresheners us up by replacing Davies who was our worst player vs Liverpool.

I would still play DCL because he’s better than Niasse and Sandro can’t even make the bench atm.

Bring NIASSE* on if we’re pushing and need someone to toey it in.

Hopefully we’ll be playing further up the pitch, Rooney on the ball and Sigurdsson arriving in the box or on the edge of the D.

Pickford

Kenny Holgate Williams Cuco

Davies Gana Rooney

Lennon DCL Sigurdsson

Quite possibly, seems to definitely be trying to be worked back into the fold. Davies was really poor in the derby as well.

So

Gueye Schneiderlin Rooney

Did'nt realise Allardyce had a run in Rafa when he was manager of shite, just been asked about in his presser, he said this

"If they want a drink, or if they don’t want a drink [after the game] that’s fine," said the Toffees manager.

"We beat him and he didn’t like it. If it’s mind games, you can say that. At that particular time, Liverpool weren’t supposed to lose to Bolton. But people didn’t know how good Bolton were at the time."

Just been reading through a Newcastle forum, 90% of them think Everton win. I think we need to include more pace in this, either Lookman/Vlasic. If you watched the Leicester game on the weekend they really struggled with their pace on the break - I think that's how to beat them. We'll probably sit in and wait for our opportunity to break

Also we’re only just turning our form round from absolutely awful.

Unrealistic to expect an overly attacking line up or approach.

The plan should be the same as Huddersfield, as in keep it tight and let superior individual quality win the game.

Since Big Sam took over, if you include the West Ham game, our possession percentage has not gone above 47%. Results have been good but it’s not been about keeping the ball.

We're approaching this game at a good time relatively speaking. Surely the mantra is 'keep building'.

There's little doubt we're a great chance of winning against Newcastle but...the hurdles keep coming.

I’d take a clean sheet from this and see if we can sneak a win. While results have been good recently and taken the pressure off a bit - we’ve gone and put the pressure back on in a different capacity; these are shite, we’ll murder these.

It was only 2 weeks ago we got absolutely battered by a very average Southampton.

Baby steps.

Draw here and then look to have a proper go at Swansea under the lights at Goodison.

The plus side of having a lot of tough games early doors means that if you can get a run going when fixtures look more favourable then suddenly the table, and our situation, looks a lot healthier once things settle down into the second phase of fixtures.

Somebody mentioned the lack of passing or poor passing. Hopefully the new coaching team can do something about the awful midfield of Gueye and Davies both of whom rarely pass a ball to a colleague. Davies should be binned for the time being for lack of overall quality. Gueye does have other qualities even if he can't pass straight. The combination is deadly to team fluency. Surely Vlasic is better than either player. I am not sure about Besic. If he came on I would not recognise him, it seems that long since he appeared.

This game should be about possession for us. Get Rooney and Gana in the middle of the park again, and dominate the middle. Perhaps something like this:

               Pickford
Kenny Williams Holgate Martina
Davies   Gana Rooney    Lennon
                   Siggy
                    DCL

Should be some nice link up play in that team, with good defensive attributes. Martina is the only true worry for me - he is way out of his depth, but i don't see any alternative other than bringing in another youth player.

Think with the lack of training days, providing that people aren’t woeful, then we’re unlikely to see lots of changes as work on shape requires a reasonable level of consistency re selections.

--------------Pickford

--Kenny Williams Holgate Martina

---------------Gana

Lookman Rooney Davies Sigurdsson

----------Calvert-Lewin

- Keep the back 4 the same - it's been solid and isn't conceding chances easily
- Rooney back in the centre where he can be on the ball more
- Lookman in as their defence is shocking and struggles against a counter attack with pace, and he probably deserves a couple of starts now to see where he is.

Schneiderlin needs to come to the party now and show what he is about. He needs to start effecting games and take hold of the midfield, as Gana can't do it on his own.

I am ok with him defensively, but in an attacking sense, its not good enough for him to get the ball, and pass it sideways as a central midfielder. He needs to dictate the tempo of play and create opportunities for the forward players to do damage. Alongside that, getting in the box and trying to get on the end of crosses wouldn't do any harm either!

Schneiderlins done literally nothing to deserve a start, it's a risk starting him over Gana. Ganas one of the very few who can run all game and win back possession, he's more crucial than people think

Been a big critic of Williams on account of the fact he has been dogshit . However , under a no frills basics first Manager he has stepped up ( the suicidal slidey on Mane aside ) and has earned his spot for now .

don´t mean to be contrary mate but if you think he´s been ok defensively then i´ve obviously been watching different games than you have.  he´s been poxy. he could do with a good stint in the stands to get his attitude in order. sam called for players to be honest with him about their futures. i don´t believe he is of the character to put up a fight and try to turn things around. i reckon he´ll be off in the summer myself. good riddance as far as i´m concerned. can´t stand players with bad attitudes. nicolas bentdner-esque

Tactical ban late on to miss Sunday and make himself available for Chelsea? Or a day off over the busy period?

Reckon Allardyce will let him know he’s got to choose option A.

I don't think this is an attitude thing. I think he has a massive lack of confidence from a combination of Everton's bad start and his terrible form. He still covers good ground, and does some good things though. Like Williams, we tend to see the couple of really poor mistakes he makes each game, and none of the good things.

As i said, it is he attacking attributes which are awful, as he brings nothing to the table, which in turn puts pressure on the defense. It is very well sitting back and protecting the back 4, but there is no point getting the ball and not being able to do anything clever with it. I would have actually rather had Barry than Schneiderlin, as you at least know what you are getting.

Williams has always been better when players around him are playing better - he was exactly the same for Swansea and Wales, where he often wasn't the better CB but stood out as he tends to operate at extremes.

He's had a bucket load of awful games for us, and a handful of great ones (I don't think he was that good on Sunday). I think he's worth sticking with to launch it long until we get our midfielders settled, at which point we start thinking about a CB who can pass out from the back.

Thought I posted this before but must not have gone through.

Thing about Schneiderlin is that if you can get him to turn around his form, you do have a genuine champions league level player. Stats wise he’s been literally half the player this year compared to last which is a massive disappointment for me, and if we can replace him with someone who isn’t such a fanny then I’d be well game (N’Zonzi, Pareades, Carvalho, Torreira, Rabiot, RLC) but I think we’re probably stuck with him so best case scenario is we get a decent half a season out of him.

In the United States, all Premier League matches are streamed by NBC. But NBC recently went from offering streams of all matches for free to cable/dish subscribe (https://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;area=subscriptions)rs to putting a large percentage of them, including the majority of Everton matches, behind a paywall (NBC Sports Gold). Not sure if that will impact the availability of illegal streams online to people based in England. Hopefully not.

Bit more width and pace would be good next half to put them on the back foot as they're applying pressure too much. We're deffo more solid but at times there it looked like the old days of being run through.. they've got to come out now so hit with pace and get the killer.

Lennon really should have scored, Rooney bailed him out, Sigurdsson Shoukd have scored

Lucky to be up tho with them hitting the inside of the post twice

Disappointed as well with how we started, they are on a bad run yet we let them build up a head of steam

Post by: KoemansNumberTens on December 14, 2017, 02:41:54 AM
We just need better attacking players. When did we last have a dominant performance from a winger, playmaker or striker. We have too many who produce moments of quality and no one who produces games of it. Bolasie getting fit would be a start, barkley staying, lookman or Vlasic producing and a new striker. We don't have a single player capable of going past people on the pitch. Until the window opens we just need to keep grinding out results
Title: Re: Newcastle V Everton.
Post by: Bwana on December 14, 2017, 02:41:56 AM
We're sitting a bit too deep still, although both of the shots that hit the post we're blinders, meaning I can't see that "accuracy" continuing. Usually 7 out of 10 of those "I just closed my eyes and let fly" end up in the stands. Especially with the second-one I'd like to raise a question towards out two holding midfielders. How is it so difficult to close these down?

On the other hand we've knit a couple of nice passes together at the other end. If we get the second goal, this can turn into a routing.

DM don’t play so high up the pitch and are far more conservative with their positioning. He’s an player who likes to tackle, it doesn’t make him a defensive midfielder.

That was not as controlled as Big Sam would probably like us to believe. We gave them way too much and provided ourselves with barely nothing.

Made up with the snidey point and there were flashes of quality stuff but we shat the bed early and couldn’t get our foot on the ball for ages.

Really happy with the point but we need to allow less chances.

I'm not sure why people are saying this, they created nothing in the last ten minutes and not much during the rest of the game. Pickford didn't have a decent save to make and hitting the post might as well hit the corner flag as you get just as many goals for it.

Definitely prefer a scrappy horrible ugly 1-0 win then a mad 5-2 defeat

Massive result that given how fucking long we’ve gone without an away win in the league

Sam is doing fucking brilliantly. With confidence low and a team leaking goals everywhere you simply can’t argue with 4 wins and 1 draw in the last 5 with only 1 goal conceded

The same back 5 for all of those games has been a big part in that but also how Sam has organised them. Holgate has come in and done well, Kenny has continued to excel, Williams has regained his form, and well done to him for it, I thought he was finished. And fair fucks to Cuco, he’s doing the fucking job!doesnt do anything fancy and just whacks it away. We’ve got no other options and he’s alright in my book

Further forward Rooney has just made his class tell recently. Even if it’s a half chance, like literally the one bit of class on the ball in the Derby was his ball to DCL

Lennon and DCL are working there arses off too

Winning is all that matters really, sometimes you might want to play better, and we might expect to at home. But away if you can get 3 points then it doesn’t matter how the fuck you get it

Up the fucking Big Sam inspired Toffees

lol

As well as the two woodwork hits I can think of at least two opportunities where they had some arsenal esque passing in our area only to not get a shot away. One time Martina or Holgate pushed a player over(no call).

Second half aside, they continuously jogged into our final 3rd and even our own area with ease, while we couldn't hold possession for more than 2-3 minutes and ended up hoofing it most of the first half.

Don't like a team like that swarming our area, even if they're not producing anything.

And again, I'm just talking about the first half. Second was much better from us.

What does it matter if they hit the wood work, it still doesn't count? Come on, "dominated for 45 minutes" massive exaggeration.

For where I want us to be, we were very poor today.
For a team that only had 18 days left to avoid going a whole calendar year without an away win, we were perfectly fine.

No surprise to see Williams looking a lot better as a very deep centre back who just needs to block, block, smash, block.

Obviously at Swansea he played in a ball-playing side so maybe he had ball magnet DM’s or very comfortable CB partner - again, looks more comfortable knowing he has Holgate to pass to and tonight Schneiderlin was offering an out also.

Would be really interested to see what el Grande Samuel could get out of Micheal Keane. Worst case scenario a younger like for like in this system.

I don't want a Championship side dominating us for the first 45 minutes, and making us look terrible, while we should have been down by 1 or 2.

I don't think that's much to ask for.
You realise we won and done enough to get the job done, after shipping a fuckton of goals I am happier with shitty 1-0 wins.

Dominated for the first 45. We had spells of maybe 2-3 minutes where we looked to get control back, but that was it.

second was much more controlled.

I saw us having difficulty getting the ball forward, and I saw us having difficulty stopping them from walking into our area with ease for a good 90% of that first 45 minutes.

For the first 45; Call it what you want but We were the second best team out there and didn't look good, and didn't deserve to be up by 1.

As stated

How we play this month is not important, it’s all about getting as many points before January window

The squad is massively unbalanced, the fact Big Sam has won us so many points already is a credit to him and long may it continue.

We are desperate for the Jan window to address the squad

Other than the first ten minutes where we didn't get started I don't see where you're coming from. If anything it was fairly open for large spells in the first half, a bit like "you have it for a few minutes, then we'll have it for a few". But to say we were dominated by a Championship side for 45 minutes is utter bollocks and a massive exaggeration. Some people are still in doomsday mode and desperate to moan about anything, in the end it turned into a pretty comfortable win where as a few weeks ago we'd probably have let them get 2 or 3.

Just enjoy the win rather than try and pick fault with something that wasn't even happening.

Made up with that win.

Solid 1-0 away from home, something I haven't seen for a good few years.

Allardyce isn't the man we might want, but he's certainly the man we need at the moment.

Not once did I think we were conceding in that game. Did Pickford even make a save?

Rooney again was brilliant. His goal was a tap in, but soon as Lennon heads the ball he's anticipating the opportunity.

Holgate needs a special mention tonight. An absolute monster in the air and that composure and quality on the ball means we can control games a lot better. Williams was boss as well, so was Martina, and Kenny goes without saying.

Made up to finally see an organised Everton team that has a clear game plan.

We might not like that game plan, but its getting us results .

Onwards and upwards from here.

Ah fuck, " I think Everton should be made an example of with an instant points deduction, we can not have opposition managers moonwalking past opposing teams dressing rooms full stop ". Said a sky spokesman last night and a BBC spokesperson also added this could be classed as inflammatory to most losing teams. Both Jamie and Danny were unavailable for further comment today, but Gary Neville was quoted as saying "we do not want this kind of disgraceful behaviour spreading to other teams outside dressing rooms throughout the premier league".

love our time wasting, i know its tedious, but its so funny.. the amount of times pickford delays getting rid of the ball..
Davies pretending to take throw ins then walking off and leaving it for someone else..

but the best is Kenny.. made me laugh so many times.. best part was on the mid way line... he had the ball.. i think he was walking with it then left it behind on the half way line, as he went over to the bi line,., the newcastle player ran over and kicked it at Kennys shins.. it rebounded off to Sam, while Kenny waved his arms about at the ref due to the newcastle player kicking the ball away..

lulz

it does piss me off tho, especially when its 0-0.. no need to waste time then!!

Big up Sam! He's making us into a professional team... Tactics, pre and during the match, interviews.. motivating players and being able to make our players play passing football and long ball dependent on the situation..

ive always thought he was a knob... which i guess he is.. but he's our knob now!

Sam Allardyce kinda reminds of when we had Joe Royle for some reason.

Newcastle were terrible in the second half and we played a really good 45 minutes to keep them from having any opportunities.

It was really noticeable in the 2nd half how we pressed much higher up the pitch, and how high Gana was - he was actually pressing with the strikers at times which was great to see.

Again, two best performers were Gana and Kenny. Cant stop these two at the moment!

Edit - Honorable mentions for Holgate and well done to Williams as well. He has looked back to his old self which is great to see.

I'm not sure Williams has actually been that much better. The defensive shape is overall much better but I couldn't necessarily say that Williams positional sense has been so much better. He's been very strong in the air but always has been. He's been launching it a bit more which is fair enough with our previous poor defence. He made a backwards header to Pickford yesterday inside his own box with 10 minutes to go which I though was particularly unnecessary and very risky. Not sure what he was thinking of there.
