Title: Everton v Southampton
Post by: Gash on May 01, 2018, 03:01:35 AM
Nearly finished.  ;)

I won't see it, I'll be getting rubbered at my cousin's 50th in Edinburgh which coincidentally also kicks off at 5.30pm.

Despite our recent solidity, I can see us drawing or losing this one. They'll be right up for it after their win at the weekend. They're not a very good team and we should be beating them, but I think their need for a result and motivation will play a part.

Southampton are filling the away end for a change. Their board subsidised their fans tickets down to a tenner.

I'm more interested in watching this to see how Southampton get on in their relegation fight, than because I particularly give a shit about watching us.

I assume we're the late kick off again as we have to be shown live a certain number of times a season??

No way anyone has chose this as a game people would voluntarily watch

Hopefully, common sense will prevail and he won't go through with it, as you mentioned there will be children on the pitch and they don't need to see or be part of any behaviour of this type from a supporter.

I agree to an extent. The problem with being a selling club is that you only have to have a short spell where incoming transfers arenít as good/productive as those who left, and youíre in the shit.

Boufal, Gabbiadini (after his initial goal glut has been awful, bullet dodged for us, there) Carrillo and Lemina have all been pretty poor. They also came from bigger teams so youíd question their hunger, too - a departure from the Ďstepping-stoneí philosophy that has served Soton well for so long.

I think momentum is important, too. Teams like Soton, West Brom and Stoke hjt their ceiling in the league and with owners not willing/able to spend to break that ceiling, the players, fans and club soon feel like theyíve achieved all they can and the inevitable downward trajectory begins. And it can gather pace pretty quickly.

They just have very simple narratives and low expectations with any team outside the top 6. There is zero nuance.

Top 7 or 8 is where we are expected to be within the PL narrative, so there are literally no problems for many in the media.

He was good in the 2nd half, particularly that back-heel.

Not sure what you expect of a 20 year-old attacking player that has been frozen out for months, and now asked to create in this tedious and predictable system.

You cant tell me that Klassen would give us anything less than what we are watching now...the commentators are so funny...they praise the job that Allerdyce has done and then spend the rest of the game wondering why Everton are so lethargic, have no spark and are playing so deep...they are unwilling to see the connection!
Title: Re: Everton v Southampton

It's funny. No matter which channel you watch us on, the commentators come into the game with this pre-ordained 'I don't see why they don't like Allardyce, they should be grateful' narrative. And then they actually watch us play...

Yep. Same with Lookman. The potential to be decent but hardly our saviours.

Our midfield is just poor and broken...although weíd look better with Walcott/Sigurdsson/Rooney in there. The ones on the pitch at the moment are just too one-dimensional. You want 3 players in there who can pass, tackle and have athleticism.

The issue is not really that this game in particular is shit -- a one-off awful performance at the end of the season with little to play for would normally be excusable -- but rather that it represents a clear continuation of the dross we have been watching for months.

He disagreed with the host that we had nothing to play for, that Sam Allardyce should be fighting to keep his job, that many of the players should be playing for their Everton careers. He criticised the work rate of some including Vlasic (although more the fact he had no confidence, and others clearly had no confidence in him), Bolasie, Tosun, Davies (not making runs behind anyone).  He said what was on show was not good enough for a football club like Everton ("this is Everton football club we are talking about, its not good enough") and agreed with the other panellist that the fans had every right to boo what they were seeing.

Is this the first time we've seen Niasse and Tosun on at the same time? I think it might be, usually it's one off, one on.

Yeah at the expense of an attacking midfielder though. Can anyone say hoooofff?

Harking back to what Robbie Earle said, it is quite worrying just how many players are playing with such lethargy in a way that suggests they feel surrounded by a safety net, like a lack of consequences of their performances. Like none of them, bar Niasse when he came on (and I'll give Coleman a pass too), look like they have a hunger and desire to show the fans they give a shit, or are worthy of playing next year in a blue shirt.

I'd like to think it's a club decision, rather than his. I think he's got the temerity and self-belief to front such situations. It's a sensible move by the club (if true) from a PR POV, and hopefully it's indicative of their understanding of our frustration.

I still maintain the players arenít good enough. We just canít pass the ball 5 yards. Weíve been poor for 40 odd games, under 3 managers. Thatís not to defend Allerdyce at all, he looks like heís run out of ideas already.

Iíd certainly temper expectations for next year.

Yep.

If coaching is shit so will the performances be.

You just have to look at the RS, for instance, to know that their sessions are as intense as hell.

We know the players can pass the ball 5 yards. So if they appear not to, that's the manager's fault.

The squad is a huge problem. The quality in terms of our creativity in particular is almost rock bottom. We've paid the price for poor recruitment. I'd say we need 4 or 5 players in the first XI if our aim is challenging higher up the league rather than tread water (CB, LB, LW, CM and another forward) and a good few for the bench too.

That's the narrative of the media in general. It's becoming worse for me in terms of the media separating out the current top 6. I've seen supposed ads for the PL that focus entirely on the top 6 (see this lovely ad for NBC in the US below by way of a quick example)

When one of those teams plays it's all about the top 6 team and the team they're playing may as well be anonymous...as we saw with that Sky ad I think it was when we played Man City.

The longer we're out of that mix of clubs the more we fade away from the media consciousness.

There is the top 6 and everyone else should be happy to be in the PL and have no higher aspirations. It's actually been one of the things (amongst our turgid football) that has been putting me off watching games.

Well my arl fella reckons it goes way back to the 60ís when they had Shankley who was all media friendly and we had Catterick who was very much and introvert.

Reckons itís always been the same, and itís something that resonates for me during my time of supporting us.

But having said that it itís not just the shite we donít get positive press in comparison with itís the like of Spurs or Newcastle.  Clubs we should comfortably sit above in the food chain, both historically and presently in either case.

Well for fucks sake, you are a decent clever guy, can you honestly hand on left bollock and say this is all Sam Allardyce's fault? I hate the fact he's here but it's not his fault we were so shit  that it came to pass, really think next year could be a whole lot worse with or without him.

but it is his fault at how the team is setup, what formation we play, what players we use and what TACTICS he employs.

When I see Klaassen play I'm not sure whether he's great but he doesn't do anything on a pitch that explains why he's been treated like a leper by Koeman and now Allardyce

by the time he came on, we had 4 center midfielders...(includin him) 2 strikers.. and  no wingers...

Sorry but we did not deserve anything today.  Not sure what Moshiri and Kenwright were smiling about at the end.

probably wanted to lol, like almost everyone on this forum did when we scored, robbing the saints...

Tom Davies did well to keep his shot low considering the way it came to him.

Feel like he could become a Frank Lampard type of player under better guidance.

That doesn't mean as good as Lampard before someone replies.
