Me too, some actual options in CM will be nice - I'd drop schneiderlin out the 18 when all fit

Adds more credence to the theory that Liverpool fans live in a parallel universe.

Great news about these four and hopefully, Seamus is not that far away either.

be good to have the option of Gana and McCarthy in CM, they would both cover a lot, especially with the front 4 and both full backs pushed on

You know what id  forgotten about McCarthy....it's good to have different options with him and gomes offering alternatives to quite a weak area in the team.

Nah, donít think thereís anything in that, a 60 minute game at Finch Farm most likely against an eleven made up of players not on international duty and a few other squad players, no consequences of a sending off, big Dunc was probably the ref !

Thing is id always go for McCarthy over Morgan.....I know they SHOULD offer pretty much the same thing but Morgan sadly is just not cutting it.

Really high hopes for gomes though who if he settles could be an absolute tank and bring some much needed good looks to our midfield.

Not at all I am fully aware of what he brings to the table and for games when Silva wants to go with two defensive midfielders I'd choose a fit McCarthy over Morgan any day of the week.

However, I personally would rather we have a player like gomes in there as a general rule.

They mustn't use cones in Scottish training routines.

Rangers never even glanced at him before getting Gerrard. Someone who has coached at a Premier League club for five years and is a Rangers icon. Not even a glance. Says a lot about both parties to be fair though!

I don't think you'll find many Rangers fans see him as an icon, most have probably forgotten he even played for them. Barely 20 games, 5 goals and best known for sticking the nut in John McStay.

Rangers fans hand out iconic status to players with only 14 games to their names?

Always put country before club even though he isnít even Irish, couple of occasions he could of said no but went off to Martin OíNeil and came back to us crocked, not the most loyal player to the club.

He plays for Ireland to honour his grandfather, who he considers to be a major influence on his career and life. You, nor I, nor anyone else is at liberty to question that. It's a personal decision for the lad, which should be respected.

Wasnít disrespecting him, quite like him as a player but was stating fact, he should show loyalty to the club and supporters that pay his wages, he has fulfilled his promise to his grandfather and may continue to play for ROI but NOT against the best advice of the club when he he is carrying or has barely recovered from an injury but goes ahead and joins up regardless and comes back crocked again .

I'm sure he doesn't go with the intention of getting injured. Representing his country obviously means a lot to him. It may mean more than turning out for Everton, big deal. He's a player that wants to play. If there are issues with him being picked that should be sorted between the club and nation, not left to the player.

I think McCarthy is massively under rated, you cant hide the fact his injury record is abysmal which will eventually cost him, but when he is fit I think hes better than anything we have in that position, he closes down just as good as Gueye, better range of passing and is more of a threat going forward

Totally understand this but I also remember a McCarthy who closed down quickly and agressively, won ball early and helped drive us forward. Or is that a false memory, blue tinted looking back at that Martinez season? He's had so many injuries since then that maybe he can't get back that dynamism I remember (rightly or wrongly!).

McCarthy is average, will be another option and hopefully still more mobile and aggressive than Schneids, but that's about it, and of course we should look to replace when we can

See him playing against the better teams when we need two DMs to break up play and generally run around a lot because we won't have much of the ball

Absolutely no need for him against teams that will sit back against us though as he's not creative or that good with the ball

So yeah, average and will have some uses

My take is McCarthy is/ was a really tidy player who tends to pass safely ,there is no denying his loyalty to the Irish team at the cost of Everton .A fit McCarthy would be another spoke in the wheel but his loyalty to Everton is not up for argument, he knows he put Ireland first .

He had one strong season for us (and I'm not even convinced he was that good in that season, personally) and loads of people have this rose-tinted perspective on him. For me, he's spent so many games going missing, passing backwards when he was under no pressure, not showing for the ball, getting nosebleeds when he crossed the halfway line, getting injured (not his fault, obviously), and putting his country before the club that pays his wages.

I'd get rid of him at the first available opportunity, and I'd rather he wasn't still here at all.

Complete shithouse of a player. Has no stomach for offering anything other than occasionally running after a player with the ball and hounding him into playing a ball back towards his own goal. Which for some reason gets a cheer from the stands and makes people think heís putting a shift in.

We need to be aiming for way past James McCarthy in the middle of the park.

Well stated.  I would let him go for a nominal fee just to get him off the payroll.  Would send him to Celtic on loan if he cannot be sold.  Probably a nice lad but there is no room for sentiment at this level.

I quite rate McCarthy. His passing range is quite poor though but he's quite fast, big lad and has a better positioning sense than Gueye.

I think Martinez pushing him far ahead and him being injured for a good part of past 2 or 3 years has put a downer on him but he's definitely a good player.

I'm not entirely sure what to make of him anymore but a fit McCarthy could be a good option to cover/rotate with Gana, with Gomes and Davies playing most of the minutes at the other deep midfield position. At the very least, that would allow us to shift Schneiderlin's wages off the books without sacrificing depth.

Picking any two of Gana, McCarthy, and Schneiderlin to start a match together is death and we should never do it as long as Davies or Gomes is fit. It seems like Silva has worked this out, which can only be a good thing moving forward.

Interestingly, heís got goals in him. But heís rarely given the opportunity to get further forward and, when given the opportunity, heíll still sit back.

Iíll be interested to see what Silva can get out of him, see if heís got it in him to play a bit more box to box. If so Iíd happily put him in ahead of Gana in a game where weíre expecting to dominate possession.

Heís got no creativity though so you need someone along side him who can pass the ball around and spot opportunities for others.

We've got Gueye who does the same job but better. We don't need an understudy like McCarthy and with just the league and FA Cup to play for it's only a game a week from here on in. Absolutely no need to keep him at the club. Bin him, Besic and Schneiderlin at the earliest opportunity and finally tear up that horrible centre of the park and start again.

Yeah, no ones calling him prolific. Iím just saying heís got the ability, he just rarely uses it. Unlike Gana who probably scores less often, but will have more attempts at goal and send 90% of them into row z.

Barring a stellar comeback, I think he'll likely be sold in the summer.
