Title: Chelsea v Everton - 2:15pm, Sunday 11th November
Post by: Bluedylan on November 07, 2018, 06:11:31 PM
Might as well get this underway.

We can win, can't we?

Maybe we can draw.

We're going to get beat, aren't we?

Relying heavily on hazard to do everything for them against deep blocks, but we donít play with a deep block, so will be interested to see what Marco does.

Do they have elite ball progressors able to bypass our press? In hazard yes, and Iíd guess their CBís can ball. Willian a superb dribbler.

Stop hazard and we have a half a shot but frankly expecting a routine 3-0/2-1 loss.

If not, expect a red card or two, and/or injuries for Richarlison and Gomes

We won’t do shit.

Missed all our chances against Arsenal and were undone by a refereeing mistake.

Underperformed (in my opinion) at United and were undone by a refereeing mistake.

Chelsea are better than both of them and we’re not allowed to win at these sort of grounds based on the last 20 years.

0-1 Chelsea.

Going to be a very tough game, and yes, we will probably get beat. But at least this season, we will almost certainly get chances, and have the players that can hurt Chelsea if they are not on top form. We did good against Untied and Arsenal, so Im not expecting us to roll over... we will probably reserve that for the Shite no doubt.

Itís the dramatic gulf in quality, not the refs.

Routine loss, Gueye early yellow, at least one key decision against us (probably a penalty) and maybe a dodgy red card.

Just another away game against the top 6...

Any idea what sort of team they've taken to Belarus though?

They're about five points ahead in the group which has three awful teams in it.

We seem to be playing all these top 6 teams away from home in the first fixture this season. Slightly odd, but it might if I'm being optimistic help us later in the season when hopefully we've had time to get our balance right and allow us to give these teams a challenge at home.

I'd like us to at least give them a game, it didn't seem like we really did that against Man Utd despite the score.

Obviously, I'd love us to win, but also being realistic even the top 6 teams would struggle to pick up points in this fixture away from home.

I think with Silva we are closer to getting a win away against the top 6.

He's put that belief in me.

We just have to get a bit of luck, and not have a big decision go against us because we're little Everton and won't care, and we can pull it off. I believe It's just a matter of time in the next couple of seasons before we do it.

Oh it wonít be full of first teamers but theyíll take a strong squad that consist of players that will play a part  Sunday but I think the main gain comes from the fact it causes them a distraction and disrupts there build up and training for this.

Topping the charts for winning the ball high up the pitch this season.

On one hand, this could work very well against Chelsea as you need to stop Jorginho dictating the game.

On the other, heís more than capable of beating the press with one pass and then itís hazard running at Coleman.

Been impressed with how silva has set up in there games so far though. Arsenal was just them having a better striker than us and the United game was similar.

Not once were we getting outplayed and chasing our tail like we have in previous seasons.

The way Richarlison cooly took both goals last week gives me confidence he is settling into his role as top scorer of the Prem, Plus, we now have a great balance in the squad and can compete well in EVERY game, no matter the opposition. Silva has put belief into the players. Its time the fans got on board.

Mina should feature again. He adds pace and could be a great threat with set pieces into the box.

1-2

Yeah, forget realism, let's all just act like we live in an alternate universe.

Chelsea are a considerably better side than us. Away from home makes it even tougher. We've improved, no doubt about that, but picking up any result here would be an upset and a great achievement.

3-1.

It's hard to be upbeat about playing the top 6 away ,our record of about one win in 40 or whatever is abysmal. But we have to forget what went before and believe in a new approach under Silva.
We missed chances at the Arse and didn't have any luck at Man U. Here's hoping third time lucky on Sunday.

Realism and pessimism/defeatism are not the same thing. Unfortunately there are many on here who are defeatist. If the players go in with the same attitude then they're fucked from the start. I've said it before on here and I'll say it again I'd never want to be stood next to some posters on here at a time when a bit of fight and bottle was needed because many in here haven't got it in them.

He fucked us over, last year of his contract so we agreed a fee with Chelsea of around 25 million, he spoke to them, agreed everything then pulled out of the deal at the last minute because "he wanted to get himself fit", came back, used our facilities to get himself fit again, let his contract run down then fucked off for nothing when the next window opened. Since then he has slagged the club off at every opportunity, saying we did nothing for his development etc... He's a rat and deserves all the abuse he will get n Sunday.

That's only part of the story, replete with a splash of snake-oil. The fee was a reported £15 million + add ons. That's not a bad return on our investment. Perhaps he should have stayed, but from his point of view he was already being rejected by his last two managers. When Big Sam was appointed, he was already half-way out the door as far as he was concerned. His progress stalled - no doubt about it. He did need coaching help, but didn't get it. Under Silva, that would have been different. We need to get some balance on here.  nod

The only story here is he did the dirty on the club that made him the player he was, that turned him into an England international, that nursed him back from horrendous injuries. He rejected Chelsea first of all because his agent told him to, told him that he would get a huge signing on fee if he became a free agent, treated the club that he supposedly loved and fans who loved him like absolute shit.

The thing about Ross is you get the impression that any abuse he gets will negative affect his game and so, as he no longer plays for us, he is fair game (regardless of the way he left etc). He seems the type that if he gets abuse at GP, tries too hard to make us eat our words and makes a mistake, he will wilt.

If youíre going to move clubs then do it the way John Stones did.

Donít be Ďinjuredí for the entire season and donít run your contract down.

Do you really think he faked his injuries? Get real. He was vastly overpriced. No one in their right mind was going to pay what Everton was asking for an injured player, out of form and out of favour. £15 million was more than I expected. Chelsea fans wanted their money back! It is only recently, under a new manager that he has started to come good. But, will it last? I just hope he remembers to pass the ball backwards as he did for us. - That would be great.

If Richarlison is out i wouldn't be surprised if we play Walcott through the middle to keep the mobile front 3 aspect to our game. With Bernard and Lookman on the flanks.

Apart from Chelsea who had agreed a £35m fee for him before he mysteriously pulled the plug and went there for £20m less in the next window, no doubt with an nice, enhanced signing on fee as a thank you for saving them all that money.

Koeman treated him like shite and the club were too incompetent to sort the situation out, now it's just easier to hate the lad..apart from sunday hope he thrives.

What does £15m get you these days @Normm (https://www.nsno.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=6640)

In those days - Barkley. Conte didn't even get in touch with him. Besides, Koeman's future was by then in doubt at the club. Under Koeman, he didn't see much of a future remaining. But, if Everton had brought in the right manager, such as Silva, it could all have been turned around. He could have been offered a new contract under a manager that valued him and could have helped his development. The police investigated allegations of fraud and found nothing. I really don't think Ross conspired to defraud. It was just a mess. Everton was a mess. All I am saying is let it pass. That's history and today (11/11) is a time to reflect on peace.

Everton is a great club with a great past and a great future just about to begin. If you focus on the "if only's" of life you will become a miserable, backward-looking defeatist. ...Which reminds me: 1-2 tomorrow! And I would be more than happy if Barkley scores for us!

No more. I just want to see the lads go into this match with growing confidence and self-belief. This is going to be a real test for both teams.

On the 11th day of the11th month (Nov) in 2018 ( which when you add up (2+0+1+8=11) our No 11 (walcott) scores 11 minutes and 11 secs after the start of the game, and we hold on to that lead untill their No 11 (pedro) equilises with 11 mins to go. Leaving the final scoe 1-1 (which looks like an 11).
Wouldnt that be a day to remember.

Paddy Power are probably giving 11/1

Seriously, more annoying than how early the fucking Christmas ads have been this year.

Interesting tidbit, we have roughly the same betting odds (+700) to get all 3 points at Stamford Bridge than Mourinho's United (+692) do of winning the away leg of their Derby.  That...seems a bit off, but deffo noticeable in any event.

Personally, I don't gamble. You have to consider Utd's odds to be very attractive though, and ask yourself, are Man city better than Juventus? We havn't beaten a top 6 side away for a long time. I think the last time was Man City years ago, iirc. Our odds are not as attractive looking as Utd's, still; this is the best side we've sent to Chelsea in years. Our team is definitely starting to gel. :)

This modern record away to the top 6 is like a millstone around our necks. I have to agree, it's possible it could all come to an end today. It's our best team for a while, and I'm not just being overly hopeful for a result. They're definitely still favourites, but they were crap against Bate Borisov and we seem to have a decent defence now, albeit with the major change of Mina coming in for Zouma. We have plenty to hit back up top and in midfield, it's much more settled. If we play as good, or better than we did against Brighton, we have a good chance today. Looking forward to this. :)

Just canít see a way around them tactically. Maybe if we had two gueyes on the pitch, one on hazard one on jorginho.

Maybe a David Luiz shocker, or Morata missing a sitter or two, trying to be optimistic.

Gylfi is going to have to sit deeper and help out against that midfield 3.

What you'd say is that there isn't a lot of creativity in their midfield. It's extremely good but you wouldn't expect any of their three to score a goal and probably only Jorginho might find clever ball, hopefully Gana can do a job on him.

I'd back Digne to keep Pedro at bay but Coleman and especially Walcott need to do their job against Hazard and I think that's where we'll come unstuck.

I can see them three in midfield just keeping and recycling possession for the entire game, and pinning us back more and more. Need quality on the out ball for the counter, not just pumping it.

It doesn't magically turn shit referees into decent ones.

Very very poor performance from the ref in that half. We shouldnít have a yellow card, and arguably the one we might have is Gomes tackle on Hazard. They should also half another yellow for Alonsos tackle on Walcott. Not to mention that Bernard incident at the end, who is a foot shorter than Rudiger, but made it look like AJ knocked him out. And refs wonder why people have a go at them.

Marco Silva's teams can't defend apparently. Martinez mark 2 and all that.

Fantastically well organised and drilled, and brave on the ball playing it out at every opportunity.

Can we do it for the full 90 is the question?

Oh and Chelsea could easily be down to 9 men, but then that would require balanced refereeing.

Superb first half away against a top level team. Closing the passing lines down, pressing at the right times, calmly passing out and a compact team shape with them all playing for each other.
To those who made lazy references to Martinez at the beginning of his reign, this shows exactly we wanted Silva.

Mina is lucky there. He had no idea where the ball was.

Still probably the right call because it seemed like Morata threw himself down when he realized he wasn't going to get to it cleanly.

Definitely need fresh legs out there and we also probably need to sit just a little deeper for a bit.

We did such a good job frustrating them for the first 50 minutes or so but now they're breaking through our pressure a little too frequently and eventually, we're going to pay.

I don't know. They're regularly getting an advantage over us at the back.

Bringing on another defender might give us a little more solidity and we still have the ability to punish them on the break given how quick and skilled our front three is.

The players who've been on since the start are probably exhausted and that's a big part of why they're playing through us so easily now.

Walcott is getting some harsh stick from the fans.

He miscontrolled a ball that nobody else but him would have had the pace to get to, hardly a glaring error either.

I thought he was very disciplined defensively, with Hazard and Alonso down the left him and Coleman had to be really on their game today

Not a bad shout. Did he get a fingertip to that Willian shot that grazed the post? He seemed to have congratulated himself after it. :)

I think he did.  It was really, really close.  Wouldn't put it past him to have super strong fingernails.

He was awful today.

Constantly giving the ball away.

Plus that was a much easier touch than he made it look.

Did his job defensively but thatís the bare minimum really.

Hard to say as there seems little between them in what we've seen this season. I was just commenting as it seems an indication that Cenk may not have much of a future. Which is hardy news to be honest as I don't think Marco fancies him at all.

I think he is far better striker than he is given credit for but I fear he is simply too slow for Marco's style ,that saddens me as I like him and the person he portrays and for that I will be sad if he goes but I was sad when many many Everton players left especially Pienaar .

Thought his hold up play was better today though.

Yeah I agree. But we miss having that goal scoring threat from other areas of the pitch. Bernard for all his tricky touches and flicks isnít going to trouble the keeper much, Walcott looks about as dangerous as toddler with a plastic spoon at the minute. Just think we miss out to much from him being okay at holding it up thereís very little threat from the others to hold it up for.

We'll pick Bournemouth and Watford off in the next few weeks and then it's a home straight to see how far we can progress against the top 6. We're comfortably the 7th best team in the league, it's now a case of closing that gap.

Seems like an odd stance to take that. Ok I get it clear eyes full hearts top blues never surrender or whatever but you can hardly blame anyone for fearing the worst going into Chelsea away? Nothing to rub in anyoneís face, especially not after a draw!

You'd know if I was rubbing people's faces in it. This is my reaction after I've seen numerous fans give up even before a ball is kicked in a game. I see the term 'makes us look small time' often on this site regarding various aspects of the club, but to me, nothing says 'small time' more than a defeatist attitude. I've never had one in sport, I've never set foot on a pitch thinking I'm going to lose - whether that was in the first team in the higher divisions or playing for the 2nds in a friendly. Yes, it's only a draw, but in this game, the Arsenal and the Utd games you can see an evolution of attitude and application. I've never been more confident since 1999 that we are going to get something from the away Derby. Positivity is contagious- it will radiate from the stands. Embrace it

Richarlison was carrying an injury and can't really be judged on the strength of this. After that leg-breaker, so was Gylfi. With these fit, it would have been even better for us. We are definitely looking like a top 6 now. We are improving massively.

Lookman looks to be replacing Bernard. I would now favour him on the wing. Great show of skill.

I'm not as sold on Lookman as some but one of Bernard or Walcott needs to make way for a bit. I think there is an argument for both. I would even say there's an argument for both being benched for Lookman and one of Tosun or Calvert Lewin in some games

Lookman has to come in for Cardiff at home. Itís an ideal opportunity to see what he can do and to give Bernard or Walcott a little break. Away from home I think itís best to stick to this line up for the derby. Whether Zouma now comes back in is a question only Marco can answer!

Think itís fair to say that it was a yellow for Mina, ref got it right regardless of him getting a foot on the ball. Weíve already seen this season with Jags (and others) it doesnít matter whether you touch the ball or not while tackling with the modern rules.

Whether the interpretation of the rules is right or wrong are a different matter.

Dermot Gallagher was saying about the Gana tackle at united, although heís won the ball thereís still contact and it makes the player lose balance.

I mean ridiculous like and you wonder what the point is when challengers like that are yellow cards.

True: Reckless is when a player acts with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, an opponent and must be cautioned.

The foul against Sigs: Using excessive force is when a player exceeds the necessary use of force and endangers the safety of an opponent and must be sent off!

The eruption of laughter in the pub after that shot was a joy, even the reds joined in, it was louder than the laughter after the replay of Rudiger throwing himself to the floor after he was viciously assaulted by little tiny Bernard.

This should receive a ban through retrospective action. This was an intentional attempt to injure Sigurdsson. Nasty fucker.

Yes I did. Am I not allowed my opinion on what I see as constant negativity and call it out? Sport is emotional, I'm seeing the little green shoots of positivity in where we are going. I've had fight and positivity drilled into me from an early age where it comes to sport. My viewpoint is different to yours - I just didn't resort to name calling.

Nice comment from a Chelsea fan on the Guardian's match blog:

Quote
No goals but not a poor game. I think chelsea wernt quite at their sharpest but that is to underplay an excellent Everton performance.

One of the most impressive visitors so far this season not only did they defend well they matched our movement in midfield something no other team has done over the course of 90 plus minutes. They also had a goal threat could easily have scored.

Chelsea were not terrible though they upped it after a flatish first half and did with difficulty carve out some opportunities. A combination of poorly timed runs pickford excellence and being just off target cost us two points.

The first half was niggly that was a poor tackle from jorginio could easily have been a red studs through the back of the player. Our passing wasnt quite as sharp as it can be and given evertons midfield and attack we were left venerable at times. But the second half chelsea stepped up and willians chance plus alonso hitting the post felt like the chances that had to go in to earn 3 points. At 85 mins it felt a goal either way would be very harsh. And by the end a draw felt the right outcome. Both teams deserved something.

Its a long season all teams will drop points and sometimes you will get lucky and find a goal fromca game like todays. Liverpool had some fortune today for instance in a game where they didnt look that impressive. Maybe its citys turn now...

Anyway onwards still unbeaten and the team is playing decent football. Now crack a beer open and enjoy the manchester derby...cheers all

Thought we were extremely impressive. Silva gets a strong 8 from me today. Wasnít sure what we where going to do but he played a blinder I think. Frustrated them at home with a very strong team out and kept us in it all the way.

The jags sub worried me but I was maybe getting carried away thinking we could have nicked it. We had been under the cosh and putting an extra body in did allow us to just shore it back up through the middle where hazard had been picking up the ball and just slow the game down again without really losing any of our potential on the break.

Id give Silva a 9 for today as I think we did as well as could be reasonably expected. He's turning this ship round.

I think they should take another look at the rules they have in place atm. A booking for tackles like that, is turning out to be a get out of jail free card. Particularly nasty. He looks as if he actually pulls Sigurdsson towards him to increase the impact when he tackled him.

A random stat doing the rounds:  Nineteen different sides - including Barcelona, Man Utd, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool - have visited Stamford Bridge in the last 10 months. Only Everton have stopped them scoring. That is how well we defended today. Things are on the up. :)

To be honest I'll hold my hands up and admit I had reservations about Silva being Martinez like from his results at Watford.

But those fears were put to bed after the Wolves game when the players were actually fit enough to get to 90 mins without looking like they were going to drop dead.

He couldn't be any less like that bald fraud.

The last window was perfect, the players we landed to target our problem areas has been a huge boost, they've all been superb, Brands and Moshiri need praise obviously but Silva tackling the defensive side of our game has been a joy to watch as that was a concern for many in him coming here, and he's answering those concerns, which were understandable to be fair.

Besides the Bernard thing, Rudiger was superb for them. Richard is on had numerous on on ones with him but dealt with him easily each time.

Mina cannot be dropped. Oozes class at the back. Ball playing CB like that are worth their weight in gold. Might be playing 3 at the back soon. With Coleman and Digne overlapping soon.

Signed is good isnít he

Coleman was superb today. Best performance from him for a long time. Man of the match is Gana though. Did a job on hazard and the rest of the Chelsea midfield that I thought only Kante was capable of.

Pickford superb as well.

If I'm being super critical, I'd say his final ball in attacking situations let us down too often for him to get the MOTM award. He's great, and I love what he does, but boy do I wish he had that final pass in his locker. Saying that, he wouldn't be playing for us if he did.

Yeah it would be good if he just had another dimension to his game, but unfortunately he doesnít like.

Need Gomes to take more responsibility in passing into dangerous areas. Still trailing behind Davies for chances/key passes per 90.

It hasn’t in his career so far but maybe.

Bernard’s an interesting cat. Reckon most would say he’s been under performing due to those two lines he’s fluffed, but he’s making so much happen on the ball - apparently only 1 Chance created from open play fewer than Gylfi, despite playing half the minutes.

Averaging about 3 a game which is like, hazard level.

Not going to get on Bernard's back (mainly because he is only small and I am fat, so it wouldn't be fair). He has settled in well, and will only get sharper, which is great, as he is already looking more threatening than Walcott on the right. Definitely think Lookman deserves a run out on the right against Cardiff.
